It's hard to believe that it has been almost a full year since this tournament was inaugurated in honor of Tim Richardson (also known to long-time denizens of the trivia forums as DINGO and TLEARY). Accordingly, as last year's winner, The Fellowship is pleased and honored to host the second installment of this new tradition.

The tournament will pretty much follow last year's edition in form: It will run all five Tuesdays in April, and each participating team's final score will be calculated as the cumulative HOF score of their four best performances in that month (in other words, each team gets to drop a low score, which will also ameliorate the impact of any technical issues on a particular night). The highest score thus calculated wins.

Teams must use assembled brainpower only. No computers and no references of any kind during gameplay, either paper or electronic (or telecommunication from outside the location). Using the Buzztime Playmaker app on electronic devices such as iPhones, iPads, or Droid phones is fine, as long as this is the only purpose for which the device is being used, and it is being used in and for the location of the team. Any exploitation of the network split to cheat is, of course, forbidden as well. Any team that pledges to abide by these rules is welcome to sign up.

The tournament starts on April 1, so signup will run from now until midnight on March 31. Please sign up either on this thread or by contacting me by PM or email.

I hope you will consider entering your team, and good skill to all.

By this standard, I think I have even less of a life than you, if that is any consolation. I always seem to be posting these things after 11:00 on a Sunday night.

Because lately the Kzoo Krew seems to spend its Tuesday evenings seeking redemption for our lousy Showdown score by doing well in Brainbuster, Fletcher's asks to join in.

Just a friendly reminder that if you have not yet entered your team in the DINGO tournament, the deadline to do so is midnight tonight.

Ever since this thread started, I’ve been wrestling with trying to figure out what Tim would want the remnants of his Brainbuster team to do. The tournament last year was conceived of as a one-time event, in the style of the PNKPIG Showdown tournament a few years ago, both held when those playing would know (at least indirectly) who the tournament honored. In anything done in perpetuity, eventually the name becomes meaningless, or at best something that someone has to explain—and I just can’t see Tim wanting to be the Irving Thalberg of the trivia world.

But I finally realized that rather than superimpose my negative feelings about an annual event on the decision as to whether my team participated, I should consult with someone who knew better what Tim would want. The conclusion was that Tim likely would want the concern raised, but that he also would want us to play.

Accordingly, Coaches Pub requests to be included.

Given the financial health of NTN, I don't think the phrase "in perpetuity" can apply to anything connected with it.

After the first week of the tournament, here are the standings:

14,265 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
13,515 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
13,247 Mad River, New York NY
13,213 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
12,957 BWW-Crystal City VA
12,687 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
12,673 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
12,077 Teaser's, Chicago IL
11,954 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
11,924 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA
11,841 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
11,494 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
11,399 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
11,277 BWW-Tallahassee FL
11,206 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
11,011 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
10,518 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
9,322 Heroes, Wichita KS
6,342 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON

It may be worth reminding everyone here that Brainbuster is an extremely volatile game, and that last year there was a different leader in every week of the tournament. With the ability to drop one low score, the tournament should be wide open in coming weeks.

Volatile? What a crock of shit! You think trivia players are fucking volatile during BB? You would have seen volatile while getting a whole fucking point per question in SD! Pissant boxes won't hold a charge worth a shit either. Volatile? Ha!

What were we talking about?

Before I give this week's results, I must make an important announcement regarding the tournament. A few weeks ago, someone from Mad River brought to our attention the fact that next week's game falls on Passover, and asked what we would do regarding this. In the weeks since, other people from other teams have contacted me privately about this, and we have had discussions within our team. Last night, the team voted to postpone next week's tournament games out of respect for the holiday and those members of teams around the continent who observe it. Thus, the tournament will resume on April 22.

Now, to this week's standings. I am posting last week's and this week's raw scores by way of comparison:

WEEK 1 WEEK 2
14,265 11,232 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
13,515 9,991 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
13,247 12,318 Mad River, New York NY
13,213 10,743 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
12,957 12,800 BWW-Crystal City VA
12,687 9,236 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
12,673 7,752 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
12,077 7,900 Teaser's, Chicago IL
11,954 7,348 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
11,924 7,399 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA
11,841 11,174 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
11,494 9,922 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
11,399 8,427 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
11,277 10,212 BWW-Tallahassee FL
11,206 10,864 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
11,011 9,476 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
10,518 5,529 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
9,322 7,601 Heroes, Wichita KS
6,342 3,794 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON

Thus, the cumulative totals stand as follows:

25,757 BWW-Crystal City VA
25,565 Mad River, New York NY
25,497 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
23,956 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
23,506 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
23,015 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
22,070 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
21,923 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
21,489 BWW-Tallahassee FL
21,416 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
20,487 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
20,425 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
19,977 Teaser's, Chicago IL
19,826 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
19,323 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA
19,302 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
16,923 Heroes, Wichita KS
16,047 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
10,136 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON

True to last year's form, the lead has changed this week, with BWW-Crystal City vaulting from fifth place to first. As everyone gets to drop a low score, there is still plenty of opportunity for further lead changes in the coming weeks.

We look forward to the tournament resuming on April 22.

Here are the scores from Week 3 of the tournament:

13,390 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
13,260 BWW-Crystal City VA
12,923 BWW-Tallahassee FL
12,633 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
11,822 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
11,774 Heroes, Wichita KS
11,712 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
10,555 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
10,494 Mad River, New York NY
10,375 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA
10,286 Teaser's, Chicago IL
10,189 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
9,989 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
9,950 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
9,486 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
9,482 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
9,083 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
8,625 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
0 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON

This makes the three week cumulative totals as follows:

39017 BWW-Crystal City VA
38130 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
36059 Mad River, New York NY
35460 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
35328 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
34727 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
34412 BWW-Tallahassee FL
33442 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
32478 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
30676 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
30414 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
30263 Teaser's, Chicago IL
30041 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
29776 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
29698 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA
28784 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
28697 Heroes, Wichita KS
25130 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
10136 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON

While this makes it look like BWW-Crystal City is running away with it, remember that everyone gets to drop a low score. This makes the competition considerably tighter with two weeks left. Good skill to all this week.

With only one week to go, this is shaping up to be a much different tournament than last year's. First, this week's scores were:

WEEK 4
12969 BWW-Crystal City VA
12328 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
11716 Mad River, New York NY
11698 Teaser's, Chicago IL
11590 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
11411 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
11260 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
11084 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
10994 Heroes, Wichita KS
10923 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
10407 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
10287 BWW-Tallahassee FL
9989 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
9623 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
8805 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
8346 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
4949 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON
0 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
0 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA

This makes the cumulative scores over four weeks as follows:

51986 BWW-Crystal City VA
49720 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
47775 Mad River, New York NY
46739 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
45987 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
44806 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
44699 BWW-Tallahassee FL
43849 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
43806 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
41961 Teaser's, Chicago IL
41125 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
40699 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
40037 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
39691 Heroes, Wichita KS
37589 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
35119 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
30676 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
29698 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA
15085 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON

If this makes it look that BWW-Crystal City has run away with it, it is because it very nearly has. Unlike last year, when a different team led every week, BWW-CC grabbed hold of the lead in Week 2 and has only solidified it since. Even when one drops the low score, it still holds a commanding lead:

39186 BWW-Crystal City VA
38488 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
37281 Mad River, New York NY
36748 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
35570 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
35460 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
34813 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
34487 BWW-Tallahassee FL
34363 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
34061 Teaser's, Chicago IL
32500 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
32285 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
32272 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
32090 Heroes, Wichita KS
30676 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
30241 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
29698 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA
29590 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
15085 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON

Does this mean the gang at BWW-CC should pop the cork on the champagne? Technically, no, but they should definitely put it on ice and have some glasses ready. Even if they get a zero this week, all but two teams are mathematically eliminated from passing their current cumulative score. Furthermore, it would take a herculean effort from those two teams (BWW-Kent and Mad River), combined with a sub-par performance by the former Grand Slammers, for either of the others to have even a chance at victory. While this is theoretically possible (and The Fellowship will be trying its darnedest this week to channel its inner Hercules), the folks at BWW-CC are squarely in the driver's seat. Congrats to them for a nearly flawless tournament so far.

Good skill to all as we finish the tournament this week.

The final game of the tournament turned out to be a real barn-burner with unexpectedly high suspense.

First, here are last night's results:

13749 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
13497 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
13386 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
13211 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
13154 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
13143 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
13010 Mad River, New York NY
12970 BWW-Crystal City VA
12809 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
12248 Teaser's, Chicago IL
12141 BWW-Tallahassee FL
12014 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
11743 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
11351 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
11307 Heroes, Wichita KS
11238 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
10548 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
4343 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON
0 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA

For those following the tournament (well, honestly, mostly just those in D.C. and Kent), it was clear going in to the last game that BWW-Kent would have to somehow pull a rabbit out of the hat to overcome the very large lead that the extremely consistent BWW-CC team had built up over the previous several weeks (and before the game started, we dutifully put a hat on our own RABBIT and physically pulled her out from under it in recognition of the long odds). When this week's scores were added to the rest, the CUMULATIVE scores for the tournament reflect BWW-CC's consistent excellence:

CUMULATIVE
64956 BWW-Crystal City VA
63469 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
60785 Mad River, New York NY
59950 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
59484 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
57949 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
57235 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
56840 BWW-Tallahassee FL
55549 Houlihan's-Westbury NY
54279 Adam's Mill, Manchester CT
54209 Teaser's, Chicago IL
52846 Maeve's Residuals, Studio City CA
51937 Stadium Cafe, Addison TX
50998 Heroes, Wichita KS
48137 Lucky Break, Tempe AZ
46470 Coaches Pub, Houston TX
42690 Blue Goose, Sharonville OH
29698 Hokie House, Blacksburg VA
19428 Three Monkeys, Scarborough ON

However, the rules allowed every team to drop a low score. In order for BWW-Kent to surpass BWW-CC, it not only had to score higher than 13,498 (something it had only managed to do once all tournament), but also to finish about 700 points or more ahead of BWW-CC, too. When the dust settled, after five weeks and tens of thousands of points being scored by each team, The Fellowship managed to squeak ahead of BWW-CC by a wafer-thin margin of only 81 points:

Drop 1
52237 BWW-Kent OH (The Fellowship)
52156 BWW-Crystal City VA
50291 Mad River, New York NY
49959 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo MI
48713 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City OK
48310 Brewstirs, Roselle IL
47749 West Park Station, Cleveland OH
47203 Houlihan's-Westbury NY

The Fellowship wishes to congratulate BWW-CC/Grand Slam for their tremendous performance during the tournament, and understands if they are collectively peeved at us for sniping the trophy from them in this way. We know that most of us would be crushed at this result if the shoe were on the other foot.

Congrats, too, to Mad River, Fletcher's, and Henry Hudson's for rounding out the top five in an extremely competitive tournament.

Lastly, thanks to all of the teams who chose to participate in what turned out to be an exciting tournament. We hope you will join next year for the third annual edition.
