With April rolling around, it is time once again to compete in the Brainbuster Tournament created in honor of Tim Richardson (also known to long-time denizens of the trivia forums as DINGO and TLEARY).

The tournament will be structured similarly to all the previous editions: It will run for five games, and each participating team's final score will be calculated as the cumulative HOF score of their four best performances in those games (in other words, each team gets to drop a low score, which will also ameliorate the impact of any technical or other issues on a particular night). The highest score thus calculated wins, and that team will get the trophy for a year and be required to run the tournament next April.

The only change this year will be one skipped week. Following Danny K's lead in the McCarthy Cup--in which the last week of the preliminary round will be April 11 in recognition of those teams affected by Passover--we will skip that week in the Brainbuster Tournament. For those affected by the last night of Passover on the 18th, they can use that week as a dropped score if necessary. Thus, the tournament will run from April 4 to May 9.

RULES: Teams must use assembled brainpower only. No computers and no references of any kind during gameplay, either paper or electronic (or telecommunication from outside the location). Using the Buzztime Playmaker app on electronic devices such as iPhones, iPads, or Droid phones is fine, as long as this is the only purpose for which the device is being used, and it is being used in and for the location of the team. Any team that pledges to abide by these rules is welcome to sign up.

As the tournament starts on April 4, signup will run from now until midnight on April 3. Please sign up either on this thread or by contacting me by PM or email.

This has been a pretty competitive tournament in years past--no team has ever led wire-to-wire, and it has always been decided on the last week of the tournament. I hope you will consider entering your team, and good skill to all.

I hate to sign up my gang without consulting them, but please add the Tailgate Cafe. What ARKUAT, CARO et alia, don't know won't hurt them. You just have to promise not to let the Tailgate win. In the moment, I'm feeling morally comprimised. Can I count on the more enlightened players in this tournament to cleanse me of my sins?

Congrats to Teaser's for the win in the first week of the tournament! While the team there has staked themselves to a nice lead, the fact that everyone gets to drop a low score means things could tighten up dramatically in weeks to come.

Before posting the standings, a friendly reminder that the tournament will be taking one week off this week (April 11) in deference to those teams affected by Passover. The tournament will resume on April 18.

So here are the current standings:

14333 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
14088 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
13516 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
13470 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
13434 Mad River (New York, NY)
13338 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
13311 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
13043 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
13012 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
12923 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
12515 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
12318 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
12161 BWW-Arlington, VA
12120 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
12072 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
11884 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
11856 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
11488 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
11472 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
9442 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

Good skill to all teams two weeks from now!

The tournament resumed this week in a game that seemed to be difficult for everyone except Danny K's:

14,164 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
12,670 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
12,634 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
12,627 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
12,297 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
12,011 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
11,803 Mad River (New York, NY)
10,456 BWW-Arlington, VA
10,396 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
10,371 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
10,351 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
10,175 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
10,140 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
10,119 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
9,857 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
9,483 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
9,478 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
9,400 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
9,143 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
9,120 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

Combined with its strong showing in the first game, these results stake Danny K's to an impressive overall lead:

28252 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
26630 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
25981 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
25677 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
25527 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
25237 Mad River (New York, NY)
24483 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
23841 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
23734 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
22617 BWW-Arlington, VA
22495 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
22437 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
22323 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
22295 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
22212 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
21823 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
21658 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
21362 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
21345 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
18562 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

Of course, there are still three more games to play and every team gets to drop a low score, so this thing is far from over. Still, if any team wants to catch Danny K's, it had better start making its move next week-ish or so. Good skill to all teams this week!

I'm attempting to live up to that accusation. No question, the performance of Danny K's has been morally uplifting.

I ended last week's update with the following observation:

ANON wrote:

Clearly, several teams took these words to heart. Danny K's put up yet another 14k score and continues to lead, but although it may still be in the driver's seat, there are some teams grabbing at the wheel. At the midway point of the tournament, here are the cumulative points standings:

42562 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
41554 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
40667 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
39973 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
39184 Mad River (New York, NY)
38636 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
37874 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
37645 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
37243 BWW-Arlington, VA
37101 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
36742 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
35423 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
35398 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
35384 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
35302 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
35277 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
35163 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
33983 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
33799 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
27623 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

As impressive as Danny K's lead is, though, it is somewhat deceptive. Because all teams get to drop a low score, and because all teams but Danny K's has a low score to drop, the rankings change a bit when this is taken into consideration:

29257 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
28474 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
28033 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
27381 Mad River (New York, NY)
27303 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
27274 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
26787 BWW-Arlington, VA
26705 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
26625 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
26567 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
26023 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
26020 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
26018 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
25799 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
25541 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
25244 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
24951 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
24316 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
23864 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
18562 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

With two weeks left, Teaser's is well-poised to challenge for the lead; and several other teams are within shouting distance now. Because Danny K's has already banked three high scores and there is not much margin for error for other teams, this is still Danny K's to lose, I think. But at least now the competition looks more interesting than it did last week.

Good skill to all teams this week!

It wasn't that many months ago that I posted my congratulations to DAR for having run this quiz, and now that level of performance seems to have become routine.

CARO, one of my Tailgate crew, ran one a couple of weeks ago.

For whatever reason, this quiz hasn't been living up to its name.

Whether to punch in rapidly, or stew over a question, potentially squandering up to 200 points, but ultimately getting it right?

I'll be very curious to see how this thing lands.

Perhaps not quite "routine"--just the week before, all but one of the team scores came in under 12.7k. Still, there have been some really good performances of late.

I'm not sure whether the content is completely to blame for this. One could make the argument that because there is a tournament going on, and several teams are perhaps "loading up" and trying harder than usual on the game, that this might be a contributing factor in higher-than-usual scores.

The Tim (DINGO) Richardson Memorial Brainbuster Cup will be going somewhere it has never been before.

Danny K's and Teaser's have been putting on a clinic of how to be consistently excellent in the game, and in so doing have pretty much mathematically eliminated every other team from contention for the trophy, including current champs The Fellowship. Because only The Fellowship and BWW-Arlington have won the tournament over its first four years of existence, that means The DINGO Cup will have a brand-new champion.

First, the scores from Week 4:

13,984 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
13,567 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
13,237 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
12,976 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
12,918 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
12,567 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
12,258 Mad River (New York, NY)
12,171 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
11,975 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
11,925 BWW-Arlington, VA
11,925 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
11,880 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
11,784 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
11,462 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
11,025 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
10,998 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
10,090 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
9,903 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
9,540 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)
7,432 BWW-Blacksburg, VA

It is worth noting here that Danny K's second-place score is its LOWEST score of the tournament so far.

With these scores, the cumulative totals are as follows:

56129 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
55538 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
52949 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
52838 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
51442 Mad River (New York, NY)
51111 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
50561 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
50019 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
49309 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
49168 BWW-Arlington, VA
48643 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
47278 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
47252 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
46947 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
45445 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
45392 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
45326 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
44824 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
42816 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
37163 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

These scores are significant because they represent the absolute minimum score each team can receive, regardless of what happens next week. Thus, it looks like Danny K's is sitting on an uncomfortable near-600-point lead over Teasers with one week to go.

But looks can be deceiving. Because Danny K's "low" score is relatively high, and Teaser's is about a 12.3k, when low scores are dropped, the picture changes:

43241 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
42562 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
40667 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
40279 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
39639 Mad River (New York, NY)
39623 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
39255 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
39134 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
38712 BWW-Arlington, VA
38636 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
38272 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
37804 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
37774 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
37421 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
35926 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
35384 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
35341 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
35326 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
35302 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
28102 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

Thus, Danny K's uncomfortable near-600-point lead changes into an uncomfortable near-700-point lead for Teaser's. Further, if you add 15,000 to each of these scores, it will give you the maximum possible score any team can receive. Because third-place The Fellowship's resulting projected score of 55,667 is still less than Danny K's minimum possible score, that means it and all teams below it are now realistically vying for third place at best.

The math for the remaining two teams gets a little tricky. Even though Danny K's has the overall lead, the dropped score means that Teaser's can clinch the win with a score of 14,322 or better. For any score between that and about 12,888, it will at least need to trail Danny K's by no more than 678 points. If Teaser's scores below 12,888, then Danny K's will win.

Good skill to both of those teams this week--whoever wins the trophy will have earned it.

As for the rest of us, third place is very much up for grabs after a certain Fellowship player who shall remain ANONymous single-handedly brought down the team score by something about 800 points by an egregiously bad call. It would be a display of fortnightly karma if Moose McGuire's knocked The Fellowship out of third place after The Fellowship eliminated them from the McCarthy Cup last week.

Anyway, good skill to all teams for the final week of the tournament!

Although the Tim (DINGO) Richardson Memorial Cup has had a shorter history than some other tournaments, it has always been long on excitement. Every year has witnessed extremely close competition throughout, with one or more lead changes over the course of the tournament. This year was no exception. Teaser's started out with the lead in Week 1, and then Danny K's grabbed it in Week 2. For the next two weeks Danny K's held the overall lead while Teaser's held the lead after dropping low scores. Thus, as usual, it all came down to the final game, with Teaser's controlling its own destiny and Danny K's needing some help. As mentioned last week, the gang at Teaser's needed to score more than 12,888 and stay within 678 points of Danny K's to claim the Cup. In more ways than one, it was not their night. When the dust settled, these were the final scores:

12,778 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
12,718 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
12,429 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
12,250 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
11,968 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
11,943 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
11,292 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
11,215 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
11,196 Mad River (New York, NY)
11,175 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)
11,064 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
11,054 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
10,905 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
10,882 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
10,802 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
10,143 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
9,913 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
9,559 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
2,920* West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
628** BWW-Arlington, VA

*West Park Station's trivia system was not working last night. The team reassembled at Game On with only enough time to answer a few questions

**It would appear that the team at BWW-Arlington chose not to play the final game. This score comes from two players who usually do not play with the team. Nevertheless, this is the HOF score for the location.

This made the total scores for all teams as follows:

68907 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
67506 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
65088 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
63092 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
62638 Mad River (New York, NY)
62016 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
61363 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
61252 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
61073 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
58342 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
58239 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
58202 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
58044 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
56274 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
56039 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
55358 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
55245 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
50172 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
49796 BWW-Arlington, VA
48338 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

But of course, the only score that matters is the total after dropping low scores:

56129 Danny K's (Orange, CA)
55538 Teaser's (Chicago, IL)
52949 Moose McGuires (Ottawa, ON)
52917 The Fellowship (BWW-Kent, OH)
51442 Mad River (New York, NY)
51111 Tailgate Cafe (Minneapolis, MN)
51077 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
50677 BWW-Bloomingdale, IL
50561 K-zoo Krew (BWW-Kalamazoo, MI)
49168 BWW-Arlington, VA
49096 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB)
48644 Bilmar Station (Tampa FL)
48643 Old Barn (Portland, OR)
48485 BWW-Oklahoma City, OK
47813 BWW-Blacksburg, VA
47252 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH)
46556 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX)
46184 Scooter's (Las Vegas, NV)
45445 BWW-Tallahassee, FL
39277 Pineapple Hill (Tustin, CA)

So Danny K's hangs on to win the 5th Annual Tim (DINGO) Richardson Memorial Brainbuster Cup--the trophy's third different winner--and Teaser's gets the silver medal. Moose McGuire's nosed out The Fellowship by 32 points for bronze, marking its best performance in the tournament ever. The Fellowship and Mad River round out the top five. Congrats to all of them: to place among the top spots in a grueling, multi-week tournament in what is arguably Buzztime's hardest game is quite an accomplishment and shows some serious trivia chops.

Before wrapping things up for another year, a few final thoughts. First, I would like to thank each and every team that participated in this year's tournament. As mentioned earlier, this is arguably Buzztime's most challenging game, and you have proved yourselves to be among the best of the best at it, week in and week out. I sincerely hope you will sign up for the sixth edition of the tournament next April.

Second, I would also like to encourage other teams that did not participate this year to consider playing next year. As this year has demonstrated, no team has a lock on this trophy, and there were some other teams which--had they chosen to play--would have been among the top five instead. If you are going to be playing the game anyway, why not enter? It really is pretty fun and exciting.

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to make a special note of remembrance to the person who is the reason for the trophy: Tim (DINGO) Richardson. His presence in the trivia forums is still deeply missed, and I would like to think he would approve of all of us remembering him in this way every year. Please consider raising a glass in honor of Tim next week when Brainbuster starts.

So Danny K's and The Fellowship have some trophies to exchange. Will someone from Danny K's please contact me so we can exchange shipping info?

That officially wraps up another truly exciting tournament. Congrats again to Danny K's on being the brainiest of the bunch and on having one of the most consistently good performances on record over the tourney's five weeks. Thanks again, too, to all who participated, and we hope to see you next April when Danny K's hosts the sixth edition of the DINGO Cup.

Hats off to the five sites who finished above the Tailgate. And while you're taking our bowlers, you're welcome to our toupees, the monocles, and our school ties. This was a shoe game, right?

Ah! Is there anything comparable to being barefoot in mud?
