New Scaratings

I've had more than my usual number of head-scratching moments playing these quizzes of late. This past Tuesday, late in a Brainbuster which I'd already failed miserably, we were asked, "In what country is the city of Isfahan?"

I precalled Iran, and the clues eliminated the distractors which weren't in the Middle East; and then the third clue: Baghdad. (!)

"Does Buzztime know something that the rest of us don't?" I asked.

"Apparently the Iranian regime covets the eastern half of Iraq," ARKUAT proposed. "And the content crew wanted to broadcast that information, to warn the intellectual elite who play these games that there is a conspiracy underway."

"Are you a conspiracy theorist, ARKUAT?"

"Only when there really is a conspiracy. I wonder if our President is involved."

I blame the Illuminati. Maybe the Rothschilds.

Given these two choices, I favor the Illuminati. There's too much mischief in the world, and too few Rothschilds to answer for it.

My all-time favorite Buzztime howler (and I can be fairly precise about this) occurred in a Countdown game I played one afternoon in early April of 2009, almost exactly nine years ago.

The snow had melted and the trees were budding and Buzztime inquired, quite innocently:

WHO CURRENTLY LEADS THE NFL IN QUARTERBACK RATING?

The answer sought, as you've no doubt already guessed, was the distinguished Denver Bronco quarterback, JAY CUTLER.

Jay Cutler might have been the correct answer six months earlier, in November, 2008. A few days before I saw this question, also in April 2009, the Broncos traded Cutler to the Chicago Bears for two first round draft choices.

I adore MERKIN, but let's face it, his notion of a conspiracy is fairly primitive. Those of us in the know are fully aware that there are no simple solutions. All decent conspriracies are vast.

You just go ahead and think that.....
