If there was any consolation for The Fellowship in the wake of its second consecutive beat-down by BWW-Crystal City in the McCarthy Cup finals, it was that at least the team managed to post a great score in the preceding Brainbuster game. It was only after Buzztime posted the HOF today, though, that the magnitude of that score in the DINGO Cup standings became apparent. While The Fellowshippers lost one tournament decisively yesterday, it appears they won another one decisively on the same night.
The previous six editions of the Tim DINGO Richardson Memorial Brainbuster Cup have been intensely competitive affairs: no team ever led the standings wire-to-wire, and the winner was always decided on the last night of the tournament. While the first condition still obtains after edition number seven, the second apparently does not.
First, this week's scores:
14,922 Red Fox Grille (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) 13,857 Danny K's (Orange, CA) 13,331 Mad River (New York, NY) 13,239 BWW-Crystal City, VA 13,057 Time Out West (Hanover Park, IL) 13,051 Tipsy Coyote (Scottsdale, AZ) 12,755 BWW-Oklahoma City (OK) 12,512 K-zoo Krew, BWW-Kalamazoo, MI 12,250 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB) 12,169 Buster's Bar (Ottawa, ON) 11,957 The Ragged Rascals (BWW-Iliff, NM) 11,751 Pockets Pool and Pub (Tallahassee, FL) 11,751 Teaser's (Chicago, IL) 11,681 Wallaby's (Lenexa, KS) 11,421 Pineapple Hill Grill (Tustin, CA) 11,051 BWW-Elmwood, LA 10,425 BWW-Blacksburg, VA 9,931 Stained Glass Pub (Elkridge, MD) 9,832 Adam's Mill (Manchester, CT) 9,307 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX) 7,591 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY 7,529 K.C.'s Time Out (Evansville, IN) 7,522 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH) 0 Cedar Cottage (Vancouver, BC)
Adding these scores to the previous ones gives the following cumulative results:
57995 Red Fox Grille (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) 55083 BWW-Crystal City, VA 52309 Danny K's (Orange, CA) 51963 Tipsy Coyote (Scottsdale, AZ) 51818 Teaser's (Chicago, IL) 51725 BWW-Oklahoma City (OK) 50850 Mad River (New York, NY) 50594 Pockets Pool and Pub (Tallahassee, FL) 49028 Buster's Bar (Ottawa, ON) 48914 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB) 48506 K-zoo Krew, BWW-Kalamazoo, MI 48216 Stained Glass Pub (Elkridge, MD) 47575 The Ragged Rascals (BWW-Iliff, NM) 47524 Time Out West (Hanover Park, IL) 47231 Wallaby's (Lenexa, KS) 44040 Pineapple Hill Grill (Tustin, CA) 41879 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH) 41291 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY 41280 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX) 40082 Adam's Mill (Manchester, CT) 36808 K.C.'s Time Out (Evansville, IN) 35345 BWW-Blacksburg, VA 30288 BWW-Elmwood, LA 20210 Cedar Cottage (Vancouver, BC)
Although you can usually take these totals with a grain of salt because they don't drop low scores, these numbers mean more than usual this week, because they represent the bare minimum that each team can score for the tournament--even if they post a zero next week, they are still guaranteed this score. Although The Fellowship looks to be just shy of a 3,000-point lead here, it is not quite that big. After dropping low scores, this is where the field stands:
44063 Red Fox Grille (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) 41844 BWW-Crystal City, VA 40409 Danny K's (Orange, CA) 40067 Teaser's (Chicago, IL) 39839 Tipsy Coyote (Scottsdale, AZ) 39701 BWW-Oklahoma City (OK) 38843 Pockets Pool and Pub (Tallahassee, FL) 38825 Mad River (New York, NY) 38285 Stained Glass Pub (Elkridge, MD) 38038 K-zoo Krew, BWW-Kalamazoo, MI 37258 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB) 37147 Time Out West (Hanover Park, IL) 37109 Buster's Bar (Ottawa, ON) 36749 The Ragged Rascals (BWW-Iliff, NM) 36410 Pineapple Hill Grill (Tustin, CA) 35605 Wallaby's (Lenexa, KS) 35345 BWW-Blacksburg, VA 34357 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH) 33700 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY 31973 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX) 30710 Adam's Mill (Manchester, CT) 30288 BWW-Elmwood, LA 29279 K.C.'s Time Out (Evansville, IN) 20210 Cedar Cottage (Vancouver, BC)
Yet it appears that The Fellowship's somewhat smaller lead will still be enough. If you add 15,000 points to these scores, you get the maximum possible points any team can score for the tournament, assuming a perfect game this coming Tuesday. Here are those numbers:
59063 Red Fox Grille (Cuyahoga Falls, OH) 56844 BWW-Crystal City, VA 55409 Danny K's (Orange, CA) 55067 Teaser's (Chicago, IL) 54839 Tipsy Coyote (Scottsdale, AZ) 54701 BWW-Oklahoma City (OK) 53843 Pockets Pool and Pub (Tallahassee, FL) 53825 Mad River (New York, NY) 53285 Stained Glass Pub (Elkridge, MD) 53038 K-zoo Krew, BWW-Kalamazoo, MI 52258 Big Guys (Winnipeg, MB) 52147 Time Out West (Hanover Park, IL) 52109 Buster's Bar (Ottawa, ON) 51749 The Ragged Rascals (BWW-Iliff, NM) 51410 Pineapple Hill Grill (Tustin, CA) 50605 Wallaby's (Lenexa, KS) 50345 BWW-Blacksburg, VA 49357 West Park Station (Cleveland, OH) 48700 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY 46973 Stadium Cafe (Addison, TX) 45710 Adam's Mill (Manchester, CT) 45288 BWW-Elmwood, LA 44279 K.C.'s Time Out (Evansville, IN) 35210 Cedar Cottage (Vancouver, BC)
Comparing the minimum and maximum columns reveals that The Fellowship's minimum possible score (57,995) is still higher than second-place BWW-Crystal City's maximum possible score. Thus, in an unprecedented feat, The Fellowship has clinched the trophy with a week to go (Given the competitive history of this tournament, I confess that this took me a bit by surprise when I crunched the numbers, and I went back and checked the math just to make sure). So I'd like to commend my teammates for pulling off this notable accomplishment, and hope that it assuages the sting of our McCarthy Cup whupping at least a little. Concurrently, I’d like to apologize to the rest of the field for making Tuesday's game a bit anti-climactic.
This is not to say, however, that there will be no drama at all on Tuesday. As MERKIN might say, “The battle for the steak knives is still on!” Yet even here, it looks like only two teams have a mathematical chance at silver. BWW-CC’s minimum possible score of 55,083 can only be surpassed by Danny K’s; and only then if it scores close to 14,700 and BWW-CC does not improve on its low score. Putting it another way, if BWW-CC scores 13,566 or above, they will clinch the steak knives no matter what Danny K’s does.
So it seems that the real battle this week will be for bronze. Only about 700 points separate the current teams ranked 3rd through 6th, and all the teams ranked 7th to 10th have a mathematical shot at third place, too. With almost half the teams still in contention for a medal, the DINGO Cup can still claim to be competitive going into its final week.
Good skill to all this week for the home stretch.
