1st Annual Glory Daze Cup

Danny K’s, having enjoyed the fun surrounding the concurrent McCarthy Cup/Brainbuster Cup tournaments this past spring, is pleased to announce the creation of an annual Glory Daze tournament to be run concurrently with the Sandbag Tournament each fall. The team has chosen to use the same rules as the Brainbuster Cup, and has elected to invite ANON to serve as guest commissioner for the inaugural tournament. He will be running the week-to-week administration of the tournament; but if there are any issues over the interpretation of the rules or other disputes, they will adjudicated/decided by Danny K's.

Just like the Brainbuster Cup, it will run for five games (starting on October 10 and running until November 7 this year). Each participating team's final score will be calculated as the cumulative HOF score of their four best performances in those games (in other words, each team gets to drop a low score, which will also ameliorate the impact of any technical or other issues on a particular night). The highest score thus calculated wins, and that team will get the trophy for a year and be required to run the tournament next fall. In addition, as was the case last year, the 2nd- and 3rd-place teams will receive silver(-ish) and bronze(-ish) actual medals with the team’s name on the back.

RULES: Teams must use assembled brainpower in the location only. No computers and no references of any kind during gameplay, either paper or electronic (or telecommunication from outside the location). Using the Buzztime Playmaker app on electronic devices such as iPhones, iPads, or Droid phones is fine, as long as this is the only purpose for which the device is being used, and it is being used in and for the location of the team. Any team that pledges to abide by these rules is welcome to sign up.

As the tournament starts on October 10, the signup period will run from now until noon on that day. Please feel free to join here, or by contacting ANON by PM or email.

As this will be running concurrently with the Sandbag Tournament, Danny K’s welcomes all Sandbag teams to join--the more the merrier!

Danny K's is in.

Is the Thur Glory Daze game included? You could take the better of the 2 scores for the week.

The Thur GD scores can be found on the bar page of each of the entered bars.

Possible? Too much work for the Southern CA guys? They’ve already shoved their Sandbag work off to Anon.

Who else would like to see all Glory Daze games in this?

I did not even realize there was a Thursday Glory Daze--it doesn't show up in the weekly HOF. You learn something new every day!

It's an interesting idea, but there could be an apples/oranges issue in practice. If, for example, you ran the MUDEE tournament including both Wed. and Thurs. games, there are definitely weeks in in which one has a significantly-different average score than the other, which could have some interesting effects on the weekly standings.

Maybe at some future point both can be included, but the idea of the person at Danny K's who created the tournament was that it run concurrently with the Sandbag so people could play both back-to-back on Tuesdays, much like the Brainbuster/McCarthy in the spring. As guest commissioner, I am going to defer to him on this.

I know, it would be quite the stretch to include Thur where you’d probably only have 5 or 6 bars playing while the majority would play Tues.

Just an idea that I wouldn’t mind hearing Danny Ks thoughts for the future, but I guess it will be up to this year’s winner to run next year.

Thursdays would be ok with some for playing Glory Days, but not others at Danny Ks. We're lucky to get some to play Tuesdays.

Hey Bobby, right, I get that lots of bars have the days they play on and other days are just no good including us at Stained Glass where Tues doesn’t work. Which is why I was inquiring about having either the Tues OR the Thur GD score count for a given week for a bar. That way more bars could play the Glory Daze tourney.

So what do you think? Add in the Thur GD scores for any bar that can’t play Tues GD?

Glory Daze Week 1 Standings:

Wow--The first week of the inaugural Glory Daze Tournament definitely started out with a bang! A full 1/3 of the field was within 200 points of perfect, and the top three were all within 30 points of each other.

As will be the case for the whole tournament, the current standings can be found on Don Denton's interactive, sortable by column, tournament page:

https://ntn.donrdenton.com/contest.php?contest=96

As always, sincerest thanks to Don Denton for his generosity with his time, effort, and technological wizardry in making these standings so convenient and accessible.

Considering that there are 60,000 points left to earn over the next four weeks and the ability to drop a low score, there is plenty of opportunity for any team to make a move into (and out of) medal position before the tournament ends. That being said, a lot of teams had good "keeper" scores this week, which will make the coming weeks pretty competitive.

One friendly reminder: I assume most people know this, but it bears repeating: guest boxes do not count toward team scores in the Hall of Fame. Be sure everyone on your team is a registered (PlayersPlus) player. It only takes a few minutes to register, of course, so if you bring a guest to play, offer them one of your registered handles or help them register before the game.

Good skill to all this week!

ANON

It seems to me the sticking point for some people might be the apples/oranges nature of this option. For better or worse, in all previous tournaments everyone is literally playing the exact same game--it is an equal playing field. To implement the either/or format would be kind of like having a golf tournament in which some people are playing on one golf course, and others are playing on another. Even if they are both par 72, let's say, that doesn't mean they are identical. Of course a team could hedge their bets by playing both nights/courses and taking the best score, but other teams that either can't or don't want to do that might object to the extra advantage that those who can might accrue.

Maybe you could ask the teams in the MUDEE tournament if they would like to have both Wednesday and Thursday SIX scores counted in the next tournament to see how they would feel about it? It would be interesting to see if that would get more bars to play.

You cannot have teams participate in the same tournament using different questions. No Thursday GD in the Tuesday tournament. If people want a Thursday GD tournament fine. Same with Six.

All that said, wasn't the Glory Daze Cup a one week tournament decided last night? :D :D

Ok thanks for thinking about it. Just a long shot idea for a 3rd tier, non prime game. I wouldn’t suggest that format for a Top Prime game like Six.

If the questions were identical many bars would get a 15000? So what’s the point of that? RICECAKE in IL would enjoy that.

The Countdown and Lunchtime month leaderboards in bars are for different games as are many other games and people enjoy shooting for that. It’s a fun competition.

But I do get it. It’s a Tues package deal, no need to involve other days of the week, though it would be fun to see how it shook out over 5 weeks.

Glory Daze Tournament, Week 2 Update:

It may not have been quite as dramatic a week as last week' virtual-tie for top honors, but that does not mean the week was without some notable performances. As usual, the current tournament standings, sortable by column, can be found here:

https://ntn.donrdenton.com/contest.php?contest=96

(Thanks, as always, to Don Denton for tracking the tournament for the community.)

While we must congratulate Danny K's for the win, we must also congratulate Primetime for taking silver and Teasers for snagging bronze. While Danny K's leads in total points, followed by Teasers and The Fellowship respectively, the top three shakes up after dropping low scores, with Teasers leading The Fellowship and Danny K's, in that order. Big Guys--the Goliath-slaying David in the Sandbag Tournament--is positioning itself as another David here--despite having only a bare quorum of players and fewer than ten operable boxes, they are solidly in 4th place whether in total points or dropping low scores. Primetime and Time Out follow, with Wallaby's and Moose McGuires not far behind.

There are still three weeks to go with lots of opportunities for more movement across the field. Good skill to all teams this week!

1st Annual Glory Daze Cup Week 3 Results:

This week's game proved to be the most difficult of the tournament so far. Of the 13 teams entered, 10 currently are using this week as their dropped score. Teaser's and The Fellowship somehow dodged the difficulty and finished 1 and 2, separated by only 34 points at 14,700 and 14,666. The next six teams were bunched in the 12,000 range. As usual, the current tournament standings, sortable by column, can be found here:

https://ntn.donrdenton.com/contest.php?contest=96

Although Danny K's dropped from 1st to 3rd in total points, this week's top four after dropping low scores remains the same: Teaser's, The Fellowship, Danny K's, and Big Guys in that order. The top three are also bunched incredibly tightly: The Fellowship trails Teaser's by only 57 points, Danny K's is only about 100 further back.

Time Out West and Primetime are 5th and 6th in total points, but swap places after dropping low scores. The biggest upward-mover between these two categories is Moose McGuire's: currently 10th in total points, it moves up to 7th after dropping low scores.

There are still two weeks to go, and no team has yet been mathematically eliminated from medal contention. Good skill to all teams this week!

Glory Daze Tournament, Penultimate Week Results

It was an extremely rough night last night in Glory Daze, so let's first congratulate Teaser's for its nice, round score of 14,000,--the only one in the 14k range--and Moose McGuire's for being the only other team to crack 13k. The rest of the field struggled. Eight of the 13 teams (including Teaser's!) are currently using last night as their dropped score. The current standings, sortable by column, can be found on Don Denton's tournament page:

https://ntn.donrdenton.com/contest.php?contest=96

As always, sincerest thanks to Don for tracking the tournament for the community.

With just one week to go, it is officially a two-team race for the currently-theoretical trophy. Despite The Fellowship's fourth-place finish this week, it is still somehow only 130 points away from Teaser's after dropping low scores, so it still has a chance to win it this week. But because Teaser's has such a high "low" score, this means Teaser's is guaranteed no worse than a second-place finish even if it uncharacteristically tanks this week. Similarly, The Fellowship is guaranteed a finish no worse than third place. But even with a perfect score this week, Danny K's can finish no higher than second.

Where it begins to get more interesting is the fight for the bronze medal. The Fellowship, Danny K's, Big Guys, Time Out West, Primetime, and Moose McGuire's all have a legitimate shot at it. To have more than half the field still in the running for a medal going into the last week shows how strong the field has been in this inaugural Glory Daze Tournament.

Good skill to all teams as we finish the tournament this week!

All Hail to Teaser's, the Glory Daze-iest, Baby Boom-iest team in the world!

Teaser's ended a magnificent tournament run last night, finishing with all five weeks of scores at 14,000 or higher. Congrats to them for hoisting the 1st Annual (and still-theoretical) Glory Daze Trophy!

Final standings, sortable by column can be found on Don Denton's tournament page. As always, thanks to him for doing this for the community:

https://ntn.donrdenton.com/contest.php?contest=96

As you can see, The Fellowship took took the silver, and Danny K's took the bronze in the tournament. Primetime made the biggest move in the last week of the tournament, jumping from 6th up to 4th. Congrats to them for a strong finish.

As we close the books on the tournament, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to all the teams that chose to participate. I know for some of us it meant asking folks to stay later than usual to play, so I appreciate your efforts to make your team as competitive as possible.

Until next fall, when Teaser's hosts the second annual tournament, have a groovy year!

On behalf of Teasers, let me say....

NO ONE IS IN MORE OF A DAZE THAN US!!

Taking a bow---Austin, Dave, Ron C, Frank, Brian and myself.

Thanks to Danny K's and ANON and the Fellowship for running the tournament. Thanks to Don Denton and his excellent website for scorekeeping. Kudos to all the teams that played.

Next year-Calvinball rules!

One Glory Daze update:

With four weeks left in the 2023 season, GLORY DAZE is the only major game for which the season title for most games won has not been decided. According to Don Dneton's NTN Data Site, Danny K's and Teasets are tied 13 wins each and Red Fox/Fellowship trails by 1 with 12 wins. Teasers holds the best game average, at 13523, with Red Fox following at 13372 and Danny K's at 13240. Should be very interesting.

Teasers votes for all astronaut questions.
