So I'm just getting home now from a 14-hour bar shift and 90 minutes of post-St. Pat's drinking with the closing staff. I remember seeing that it was 4:30 and then that it was 10:30, so I comletely missed the Topix game. (I knoew I wouldn't be able to play, but I had planned at least to glance up at a few questions.) Did anyone play? How was the game?

The game was tough. I was at Adams Mill, and am thankful that one of our players (Al/TWIT) was very knowledgeable on the subject. :)

Anyway, the questions that I recall at this time:

How (by what method) did Mark Antony commit suicide?

Who was Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus more commonly known as?

Who did Rome oppose in the Battle of Mylae?

One question that hardly belonged to a history-related Topix, in my opinion: What is XCV + XVI?
If I think of any more, I will post them. :)

There were other non-historical questions too. Units of measure was one. It was more a classical civilization quiz than a history one. Either is fine, and it mercifully avoided pop culture representations of Rome, but a bit of a misnomer. Very little of the "who became emperor in 14 CE?" kind of history question.

Another one:

The saltus was the largest unit measuring what kind of quantity?
Congrats to Rhino on the #1 score last night. He seems to be particularly adept at ancient history; I recall he had a perfecto on Alexander the Great a year or so back. :)

Two more:

A pileus was a felt cap worn by which type of person?

Which historian wrote Annals and Germania?

(On the latter, I looked up the works from the Wikipedia entry of the correct answer. I think I'm close, but cannot ensure these were cited in the question.)

Well. I'm sorry I missed it. Thanks for the feedback. I figured RHINO'd do pretty well, but I didn't even get to look up at a trivia screen to see the national board after the game.

Believe this mentioned/ mentions the color red (cap) in the question - as I have seen this ? once in a great while in regular Countdown.

This was one of only three MEEE ( at our bar) did not know...and one of the few I did.. We were clueless on the saltus / measurement question... and he and I harbored a good guess on the 2nd to last one - IIRC it asked about Vitruvius' occupation.

Saltus was one of my need-clues too. Never come across that in several years of Latin and Ancient History studies, except in the meaning of a large wood or forest. More embarrassingly, the other was Caligula's full name - got him mixed up with the very similarly named Claudius (the fact that the latter's full name actually contains "Claudius" took a while to register  ). At least I only lost 400 or so on that one not the 700+ on saltus.

Only other one I remember right now was who was Julius Caesar's main rival for power, with Pompey not having much in the way of realistic distractors.

Let me guess:
1. Alexander the Great
2. Ovid
3. Augustus
4. Pompey
5. Tiefly

Not QUITE that bad I must be honest. Can't recall details but I do remember thinking "well who else could it be?".
