I just got an email that read, "Hi, [my real name]! zearl is now your buddy on Buzztime. Click here so you can compare how each of you is doing."
Is this some kind of phishing ploy? I never heard of zearl, nor do I like it that Buzztime is spreading around my actual name, if that is indeed what's happening. Has anybody else had this exprience?

Due to BT's "no guests allowed" fiasco, I had created a new account (zog742). Today, I made it into a "buddy" of my primary zog741 so I could more easily track the new account's scores. Minutes later, new account received a very similar e-mail from my primary:

----------------------------------------------------------
Hi, zog742,

Richard *********** just added you as a Buddy!

[my avatar] <- "Add me as a buddy so we can see how we stack up against each other!"
[a green button that reads, "Add Buddy"]
To add Richard ************* as a Buddy, Go here.

Stop receiving emails from Richard *************, Go here
Stop receiving emails from Buzztime, Go here
This e-mail was sent by Buzztime, Inc.
2231 Rutherford Rd. Suite 200, Carlsbad, CA, 92008, USA
----------------------------------------------------------

That e-mail also listed my actual full name and my e-mail address from zog741. I don't like that one bit!

As for zearl, Buzztime's search shows him as being at Mad River Bar and Grill, but with no play history. I would tread very carefully.

Haven't got one yet but since this may have started Friday, I'll add you too to see if I or you guys get an email.

Yes, I got it, and learned your last name in the process. Wouldn't you rather have stayed "Mitchwolf"?

When the topic of data mining came up a couple of weeks ago, I looked through the BT privacy policy. I saw where they can share the info they collect with their partners, etc., but I sure didn't see anything that would allow BT to release an individual player's name and email address to another individual player without the consent of both parties.

I haven't received any "buddy" notice message yet, but if I do, I will register a complaint. Or actually perhaps it would be best to send a message now that release of my name/email address to another player would be without permission and outside BT's privacy policy, and as such would be against the law.

That's a clear violation of privacy policies, and entirely unacceptable. Someone at Buzztime screwed the pooch on that one.

1 correction is that you don't see the email address of the person that you add to your buddy list. It comes from Buzztime itself.

No, the person added to the "buddy" list got the e-mail address of the one who added that person, and that isn't right either. It's still an invasion of privacy. There really should not be any e-mail sent at all.

Already posted on their Facebook wall about it. I'm entirely serious in my absolute intention to sue should they leak any other info of mine in those cases. I'm OK with contractual obligations between third party industries, but non-notified distribution of personal information gathered before their terms of service were updated with no notification of terms of service is a sticking point with me. I will let a lot of things I find shitty slide -- this is one of those things that I'll be the first on the doorstep of the EFF, amongst other groups, making sure at least one lawyer fires off a letter.

All it encourages me to do is never use their feature. There are more than a few people I've met playing Buzztime who I'm not comfortable with even knowing what I look like, much less getting my actual real name.

Fortunately, my real name is shared by a few million other people, but what about that one Buzztime player named "Angree S. Hithead" ?

Found it. It was buried within the email. Outlook wasn't showing it without changing a few options. I do agree that there shouldn't be an email sent.

Guess Buzztime is ignoring this issue like they are with the Split.

Hey guys, we are not ignoring this issue. When it was brought to our attention on Facebook I responded and made sure to update the privacy policy - our original privacy policy was vague and referenced our "interactive features". Since then I have put in a request that we either stop sending the email, or we send the email from Buzztime with only the Display Name of the person who added you as a Buddy. I am just waiting to hear back at this point. I will keep you posted.

There should be no e-mail sent, period.

I agree. I've been getting spam from someone that added me as a buddy.

Not trying to be a fussbucket but I don't like the fact some weirdo has my email address and is emailing me spam about how to improve my business or sex life.

I am more a fussbucket than you, Brandy. I am being one since the Split. I played live trivia tonight instead of Showdown. When the Hooters competition ends, I may go to another live trivia spot on Thursdays.

No. She is acting like a fussbucket, BO. You're just BO, no label needed. In fact the Split is making lots of us fussbuckets.

Back to the issue at hand, I think it is completely weird that someone I don't know can add me as a friend and then spam me. I never signed up for that. Buzztime should never have released our private email addresses. I would say more but I don't want to get banned.

Hmm . . .

I need to think of a way to get you, Brandy, to call me a fussbucket. Then NYMFAF to call me an assbucket over on BadBart. And I'm sure there's many more variations on this theme for me to compile into a collection

I'll call it my Bucket List!
