I got to play some Wednesday night games recently because my schedule permitted it... but most times I am working! This married couple has been running the Lexitopia local HST while I have been away. (I can easily tell they work together while everyone else is solo.) Is it sad I want to quit so I can defend?

MRGRAY, I was reading your thread regarding your quest for a 50K on the Six Quiz with considerable sympathy, and felt justifiably alarmed when you broke it off seven months ago. I would hope you know you enjoy bragging rights. Instead, we your readers were left wondering whether you were wandering in the wilderness, unshaved and unshorn, wild-eyed, dressed only in a loincloth - or perhaps in filthy rags, like the rest of us. Instead, you're promoting yourself as a conventioneer, on the Palooza thread.

My advice, since you're asking: keep your job, but regardless how slender your resume, pursue a better job and a better resume. Continue, as your personality advises, to ask more questions than you can answer, but couch your questions in plain language, and listen carefully to the replies you're proffered. Be confident of your personal integrity, but protect it. If you find yourself in an argument you have done nothing to provoke, defend yourself, or your position, based only on facts you can confidently justify. Once burned, twice shy: if your evidence is challenged on a popular topic, check and reference your sources. You are likely to be challenged again, especially if you opt for a career in politics, which your posts on this website generally recommend.

General knowledge trivia isn't really an end in itself: it's one of many points of entry into a world where argument among the elite species on this sphere is growing at once more rational and more contentious. Oh! And one other thing: Never become a Prince of Denmark.

I mean I do wear a loincloth, but it is preference more than anything else.

I do need to continue that thread... For full disclosure my disappearance went something like this:

1. I was unemployed at the time, so could go every week.
2. That meant my dad (and trivia rival) paid for the trips.
3. Money got kind of tight for a while and we had to quit going.
4. Now I am employed and can pay my way but have ended up working most trivia nights.
5. The times I have been able to play recently were abominations, including a 25k score. My average is under 39/40k for the first time in a while. I like to report only when close to 50k in one way or another (whether a couple k or one 10k point question, etc) for the enjoyment of the reader. It also is cathartic to vent about my awkward disasters.

Personally I am unsure of the Palooza, as a solo player. I would be going purely for the sake of community if I did go (I made a team account months back so I could participate and not affect my solo account's data). The only community I have at my local place is the odd family member accompanying me and the couple that teams up to try and wipe me off the local HST when I am not there to block them from even getting on it. They can't seem to come close to doing it in Six but are seeing moderate success in Lexitopia, my favorite game.

I think the couple gets online and checks stuff out, either here or the local site's page on buzztime. They used to play Wednesday games once a month but have now played three weeks in a row out of the blue after I called them out. No data on tonight yet but this could be the 4th straight week.

Politics? I have no interest in politics. It's competing groups of people trying to impose their will and values on everyone else. It's much easier to help people through NGOs and the like.

Well expressed. I hope your job is both interesting and remunerative, despite its inconveniences (there's a reason why they call it 'work').

I presume you've been following Mudee's Six thread regarding his Thursday rollover tournament. When I suggested to my fellow players at B-52 that we might join - well, the conversation was depressing beyond embarrassment. But it did put in mind a very peculiar idea: attempting to draft a kind of fantasy team, consisting of players in groups too small (especially solo) to compete as a site: something like Mice's Marauders. There are at least two obvious flaws with my idea, the least pressing where to send the travelling trophy in the unlikely event of victory. At present the idea is too nebulous to drop on Mudee's thread, but I thought it might amuse you. It wouldn't bother me to have MAST and RHINO for teammates...

Sadly no, my job is menial. I should have gotten a more competitive degree.

I am actually unaware of this thread, but it sounds interesting. And your idea is pretty cool...though I can't see anyone clamoring for me haha. My old scores dropped off and so did my average.

I requested Wednesdays off and it was approved. Expect to see me posting awful scores on Wednesdays once more! 8-)
