There are four more new Big Fish game releases. They are on just two CDs, with two new games on each one.

Image

You get both "Dark Parables: The Final Cinderella" and "Macabre Mysteries: Curse of the Nightingale" on this CD.

Here's some video of "The Final Cinderella" beginning, with voice over from some goofy guy:

"Macabre Mysteries: Curse of the Nightingale"

"Sable Maze:Sullivan River"

Here's some video of the game:

Also on the same CD is "Sable Maze: Norwich Caves".

Here's some video of that game:

"Plants vs. Zombies" is a game I have never played, and probably never will. I ran across it while Looking for a birthday song for BOTANIST a couple of days ago. It looks too confusing for me, but I'm thinking that some of you young guys or gals might have played the game. If any of you ever have, please tell me how the game goes. :D

Here's some video of the game:

"The Shattered Medallion" is the latest Nancy Drew game release. I haven't gotten very far into it yet, but so far I think the game is pretty tough.

Once again, I've got to tell you macho computer game players that the "Nancy Drew" series of games aren't for sissies. They are challenging, and quite difficult.

p.s. "The Shattered Medallion" is the 30th in the series.

"Vacation Quest, The Hawaiian Islands" is a totally stupid hidden object game, but it's somewhat challening, and becomes addictive when you decide that you're gonna beat the stupid game. You should be able to find it somewhere for less than $5.00. This is definitely not anything like a strong recommendation, but if you have an hour or so to fill the void after you've finished the crossword puzzle, the Jumble, the Word find, and the Soduko in your daily newspaper, before you move on to important things, give it a try.

Here's some game play:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y68CF7YELoY

(Whoever made this video isn't very good at playing hidden object games.)

p.s. It is important to find the three sea shells in every hidden object scene you play. I would suggest that you find the three sea shells first, before you start looking for the other hidden objects. If you don't, it is likely that you will finnish the scene without all of them, and once you've finnished the screen, you cannot go back. (I should add that very often one of the shells you need to find is not an actual sea shell, but just the word "SHELL" spelled out on a sign in the scene.)

"Legends of Eternity" is the latest release in the ever growing "Legends" series of games. The CD has six games on it. I will say that this is not the best CD that "On Hands Software" has put out.

The games on the CD are:

1- "Aaron Crane: Paintings Come Alive"

2- "Celtic Lore: Sidhe Hills"

3- "Live Novels: Pride & Predjudice"

4- "Angela Young 3: Lucid Dreams"

5- "Renovate & Relocate: Miami" (The game totally sucks.)

6- "Spirit of Wandering: The Legend"

(I may be wrong, but I think some of these games may have already been released on previous "Legends" CDs.)

Sad news...

I first noticed that Walmart was taking most of the PC computer games off the shelves in Rome, NY, but I wrote it off because Rome, NY is a very small city, and I didn't worry about it. However, now I'm worried, because the super Walmart in Middletown, KY (An affluent suburb of Louisville) has done the same thing. I'm gonna guess that all of the Walmarts are doing the same thing. The selection of PC games that they still carry is so small that I don't think I'm going to waste my time going in there anymore. Does anyone know what is going on...?

Cloudy.....it's not worth it. More kids today are playing games on their phones, pads and XBox/PS4/DS/etc, that computer based games aren't making the money they used to. The same holds true for any computer software (productivity, anti-virus, educational, etc). It is in WalMart's best interest to use the floor space for things that sell better. The same holds true for Best Buy, in case you hadn't been in there for a while.

Just think, Cloudy. In a few years someone new will visit this web site, and post on the Remeber When thread that Walmart used to sell PC based games.

Yeah, but all of the older people, who like to play real computer games aren't dead yet. It's not like Walmart is some tiny store with limited shelf space to display PC computer games. My guess is that some under 30-year-old, who somehow got into a minor management position in the company, is doing this to increase sales of printer paper, which now occupies the space where computer games used to be. I wish him an early termination.

I'm not going to do anything like boycotting Walmart, but I will say that I will probably be shopping for groceries a lot more at Krogers, and buying all of my computer paper from Staples from now on.

I believe that I have overlooked mentioning "Legacy Games". They are very inexpensive, and most are pretty darn good.

Here are three that I recommend:

1- Image

"Cursed Fates - The Headless Horseman" is a good game. You will probably need to play the game three times to collect enough of the hidden special horseshoes to have enough money to buy all of the items in the trophy room at the end of the game. The items you were not able to buy after playing the game remain there for you to buy in subsequent games. What you have already purchased does not go away, and any left over money is still there to spend.

Here's some video of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf2nUMFF_qA

2 - Image

"Legacy Tales - Mercy of the Gallows" is another good game. (The coins can be very hard to find at times, but you need to find just about all of them to open the treasure chests that contain things you must have to progress in the game.)

Here's some video of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6usNBp-NLnA

3 - Image

"The Beast of Lycan Isle" is pretty challenging too. Though it will have you running all over the place, I think it's a good game.

Here's some video of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmSQmKuQ2MU

(Yeah, all three of them include hidden object scenes, but they are few and far between.)

p.s. These are not the only three Legacy Games that I would recommend, but I thought three were enough.

"Russian 6 Pack (Six Challenging Games from Russia)" comes in a box with two 3 1/2" floppy discs, and a 32 page manual. It's a big box, about 9 inches tall, 7 1/2 inches wide, and 1 inch deep. Interplay put this out in the U.S. in 1983, and it will work with DOS 3.1 or higher. However, it's not about the games, which none of you will ever be able to play, that I am making this post.

This post is about the words on the back of the box, that I am looking at now. The first words are:

"As a grand gesture of goodwill, Russian developers bring you six marvelously mind-bending, enormously entertaining new games - destined to be the greatest challenge since the Cold War."

For what it's worth, the six games are:

"Crete", "Line Man", "Flying Pictures", "Shadows", "Master of Bombs", and "Fast Ring".

The sad thing is that it's starting to look like those friendly, kind words, that started the commentary on the back of the box that the games came in, may no longer hold true, with what is going on today.

There are five new Big Fish games out there now on three Collector's Edition CDs.

Image

"Grim Tales, Bloody Mary" looks like it might be pretty good, but I haven't played it yet. The Collector's Editon includes the bonus game, "Gravely Silent, House of Deadlock", which I have yet to play also.

Image

The next one is "The Agency of Anomalies, The Last Performance".

Image

I haven't played this one yet either. The "Collector's Edition" includes the bonus game, "Dark Dimensions, City of Fog".

Image

I have started playing "Redmption Cemetery, Salvation of the Lost", and so far it's pretty darn good.

Image

(The bonus game that comes with it is "Haunted Legends, The Bronze Horseman", but this game was previously released, so I'm not counting it as a new one.

Does anyone remember Babbage's computer game stores? There were over 6,000 of them back in the heydays of PC gaming.

http://professionalsalesengineer.files. ... 2e9e_z.jpg

As you walked through their aisles, you could find hundreds and hundreds of all sorts of computer games to choose from for PC's back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Sadly, I believe all of the Babbage's stores are gone today. As I understand it, the ever increasing popularity of non-PC games designed for proprietary gaming platforms, and the ever decreasing number of companies creating new PC games caused their demise. The company went through a long list of buy-outs, and today it is just a memory.

My cynical thought about this is that the companies that sold their proprietary gaming platforms wanted to run other companies that created computer games for the PC out of business, so they could increase their profits. They won, Babbage's is gone, and we can no longer walk through those aisles and pick something out that we like out of the hundreds and hundreds of diverse computer games as we once could. :(

Babbage's eventually became Game Stop. Here is the wiki page with the history time line. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GameStop

Unfortunately, Game Stop has gotten away from the PC games for the most part. Although they sell they sell Steam Cards to buy games on http://store.steampowered.com which has a plethora of PC games.

The ScaRatings has a lot of new people, who are joining the fray. It is most unlikely that they will waste their time going back to page #1 of threads that they jump in on. They are most likely to just pick up on the most recent post on threads that catch their attention, and add on to them. There is nothing wrong with this except there may possibly be interesting things posted before their joining, that they will never see.

I think this thread could use some new blood, so I am going to take you all back to a post I made here on page #1 of this thread on March 22, 2011. To paraphrase, it asked computer gamers to post a list of ten games that they really liked, or used to like. You don't have to worry, anything you liked either new or old, on any gaming platform, on the internet, on pc 5 1/4" or 3 1/2" DOS floppies, on CD's, at computer arcades, on your cell phone, or anywhere else is fair game.

p.s. Old timer ScaRatings folks don't have to hang back. This your chance to put some games up here that you didn't think of way back in 2011.

p.p.s. As I think about it, ten games is very arbitrary on my part. Let's change that to any that come to mind. Yep, one game would be okay, and if anyone has more than ten, go for it. :D

Okay, I'll go first. Here are two that I missed:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... ox_art.jpg

1- "Sherlock, The Riddle of the Crown Jewels" (1988)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfvAZ-Lx8iU

It came in a lovely box, full of all sorts of pamphlets, and one 5 1/4" floppy disc. (It was an Infocom text based game. Yep, that means no pictures or video.)

http://www.hexence.com/gnupick/wp-conte ... 314-00.jpg

2- "The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Serrated Scapel" (1992)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imALEhYwApQ

It came in a bigger lovely box, with a manual, and nine 3 1/2" floppy discs. (It was an Electronic Arts game.)

These were both good games, and I would recommend them to you, if you could ever find a way to install old DOS games that come on 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" floppies on your computer today and play them. :D

Wow...so this could be like telling the story of my life but I'll paraphrase...so my first video game experience was with the Atari 2600 or possibly playing pinball at the bowling alley. Mostly, I played River Raid and Pitfall on the 2600. Moved on to the Nintendo where I mastered the Mario games, then a Genesis, N64, Dreamcast, had a PS2, XBox, and Gamecube at the same time, and now using the 360 until I move on to the XBox One or PS4, still have not decided yet. So to pick some favorite games out of all of those...wow, here goes. I'll list by system. Most of my gaming is consoles but I dabbled in a few PC games (mostly in high school in the late 90s).

Nintendo - PaperBoy will always be a Nintendo classic to me.
PC - Hexen (played mostly over a LAN with friends) and Quake
Genesis - NHLPA 93 - still the best hockey game of all time
N64 - Goldeneye (re-defined the standard for 1st person Shooter on the console)
PS2 - Gran Turismo 2 - ultra realistic racing game with so many cars
XBox - Halo (spent many nights networking XBox's together and Having Halo LAN parties); Hitman - spent hours on this game, mostly 1 specific mission that is a story in and of itself.
Gamecube - Animal Crossing was my guilty pleasure, very child-like game but also very fun
Xbox 360 - Assassin's Creed Series (my current favorite)

For a time about 15 years ago, spent countless hours a day playing Ultima Online, which has basically ruined all RPGs for me from that point on.

And yes, I do remember Babbage's although had forgot about that until I read this thread.

My first was Pong, with the heavy dials on the controller. It became boring pretty quick, but was cool for a while.

Then on to Atari 2600. I played so many games on that I don't remember them all, but the ones that stand out are Battlezone, Breakout, Defender, Pac Man and Space Invaders.

I played a LOT of arcade games and pinball, My favorite pinball machines were the double deckers like Terminator and Defender. Mt favorite arcades were Galaga, Pac Man, Centipede, Donkey Kong Jr, and Missile Command.

About the only PC games I ever played were Sim City and Family Feud that I played on an old 8086 PC on 5 1/4 floppy.

I really haven't played too much on the newer game systems, but my son has a PS2 with The Italian Job game that I liked.

I played "Paperboy" too. Actually, after looking at the box it came in, the game I played was "Paperboy 2". It was a 1991 PC DOS Mindscape game. The box it came in had it on both 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" floppies, as well as a user's manual. I really liked the game, however, sadly I never was able to make it to the finish, and now it looks like I never will.

Here's some video of it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIHTE84ykhQ

Got a couple questions for you. Did it actually have an ending, where you beat the game and won? If so, did you ever complete your paper route...?

MUDEE, I've played most of the arcade games that you have. Could we both have spent too much time in bars in our youth...?

You say that you haven't played many PC computer games. I would guess that is because you have a family and a job, and all of the time consuming responsibilities that go along with them. The heyday of PC computer games has passed, and there aren't many new games being created today. All of the great ones were in the past. Some of them can be found on Amazon.com, eBay, and places like that, which will still play on modern computers. There are a lot of them that you would probably enjoy playing. When the time comes that allows you free time to waste playing computer games, allow me to suggest that you scroll back through the 34 pages of this thread, pick out a few that have been recommended, and give them a try. :D

Got a couple questions for you. Did it actually have an ending, where you beat the game and won? If so, did you ever complete your paper route...?

Yeah, obviously not with the cinematic endings that games typically have these days but you "won" the game by making it to Sunday and completing that delivery. Each day got harder, more and harder obstacles, etc...so it was no easy feat to do.

But if you made it through Sunday where the papers flew slower because they were heavier then the ending was a newspaper with a headline something like Paperboy wins award for outstanding delivery where if you failed or ran out of lives it ended with Paperboy calls it quits. I made it a couple times.

Have you ever seen the movie Wreck-It Ralph? Although a kid's movie, it pays homage to many old arcade and video game classics during various points of the movie.

Speaking of arcades, I guess I left out that section. Some of the ones I played more frequently were Pole Position, Ivan Ironman Stewart's Super Off Road, Double Dragon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Mercs. My wife's cousin actually has an original Donkey Kong too so play that somewhat frequently whenever we visit.

Nope, I've never seen the movie, but from what you say, I guess I need to pick it up and watch it. I'm taking the liberty of adding "Wreck-It Ralph" to the "Obscure movies you like..." thread in the "Free For All" forum here. You might want to go there, and tell everyone about the movie. It fits in perfectly with the theme of the thread.

p.s. I believe there is a "Wreck-It Ralph 2" sequel in the works today.
