I need some help on two baseball announcer quotes that I can only vaguely remember.

One said something like "Open the door Millie" or something like that.

I think the other one said something about letting the goat out.

Anyone got a clue? :?

Rosey Rowswell of the Pirates would say "Open the window, Aunt Minnie! Here it comes" when a Pirate hit a homer at Forbes Field.

Don't know about the goat - it might have something to do with the Billy Goat Curse?

Thank you. You are absolutely correct with "Open the window, Aunt Minnie! Here it comes."

p.s. I just found a link that has a bunch of quotes like this.

How many of you guys played baseball beyond Little League? I'm not asking about softball leagues, or pickup games on the sandlot. I'm asking about real baseball, such as Babe Ruth and the older Pony Leagues, high school, college, and beyond...

Though I was a Little League all-star every year, I sucked trying out for Babe Ruth, and my baseball career ended long before I could fulfill my childhood dream of playing left field for the Boston Red Sox. Maybe some of you guys made it farther than I did, and here is your chance to tell your story. Put all modesty aside, and brag and crow about your baseball accomplishments to your heart's content.

One guy already sent me an e-mail on this.

Here it is:

"I never got to play Little League, because my folks kicked me out ot the house, and sent me to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys to live off and on for a while. I made their baseball team, and later on did pretty good at the sport. Here's a picture of me while I was there."

Image

I'm the chubby kid in the back row on the left.

Your friend, George."

(I think this is the first time George has ever posted anything on the "ScaRatings".)

Wow...! George went to school with your grandfather's cousin. What a neat fact. Don't you wish you have could have been there with your grandfather's cousin knowing what you do today. You could have gotten autographs that would be worth thousand of dollars today.

Yesterday, the Pirates blew a 7-0 lead.

An announcer stated that the Mets score 9 "unaswered" runs.

Final score: Mets 9 Pirates 8.

WTF?!

"An announcer stated that the Mets score 9 "unaswered" runs."

Hmm, this is a tough one to make excuses for. The best excuse I can come up with, is that the announcer asked the Pirates' bench about the 8 runs they scored in the game, and they didn't respond to his questions. Other than that, I have to think the announcer was an idiot, drunk, or most likely just spouting things off without thinking.

Hmm, "without thinking..." Yeah, I've decided the guy was an idiot on that one.

Where is COORSYA...? Heck, he started this thread, but lately we don't hear anything from him. I don't think the thread has been hijacked, because it has stayed true to baseball. If anyone knows COORSYA, please let him know that his thread is alive and well, and that we are missing his comments.

Okay, seeing that no one else will, I'll put all modesty aside. :D Way back in the late 1950's, while pitching for the Lake Delta Little League Tigers, I once struck out 13 batters in a 6 inning game. Come on, some braggart should be able to top that TRUE story.

I'm assuming a typo here. But I've heard the phrase "unanswered" so many times, and in all sports. So the Mets (hooray!) scored nine consecutive runs; I assume the last run scored went to the Pirates.

When I lived in Ohio, and listened to Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall give Reds broadcasts, one of them, after a fielding error, would invariably comment about not being able to "find the handle on the ball"! I have never heard another baseball announcer come up with that expression. (I think if baseballs actually had handles, there would be a lot more fielding errors! Baseball would certainly be a strange game if that were the case.)

I believe Joe Nuxhall still holds the record for being the youngest major league baseball player. He pitched two thirds of an inning for the Reds in 1944, when he was only 15-years-old.

Image

Here's a baseball trivia question. Who was the oldest major league baseball player? (I used to think it was Minnie Minoso, until someone corrected me about a month ago.)

............... Image

.......... It wasn't Minnie. He was the 2nd oldest.

Yes, I like your signature. I'm tempted to paraphrase it as "Don't look back; the bastards are the other way!"

From what I can find they say Satchel was 59, and Minnie was 57. However, I also thought they were both 60 or over.

Pirates have the #1 pick tonight in the amateur draft. Supposed to take the UCLA right-handed pitcher Gerrit Coles.

Last Pirate #1 pitcher was Kris Benson, who never lived up to the hype, but had a fairly hot wife.

I never got beyond Little League. I'm impressed that your baseball career went on to high school. Got any stories about what it was like to play in the dead-ball era?

Seriously, this is your opportunity to brag about your baseball accomplishments. Throw all modesty aside, and tell us about it. :D

Nuts. How about we discuss this year's Division I College World Series instead? Image

As some of you have seen in another thread, The California Golden Bears, who started this year with the unfortunate prospect of playing their last season, now find themselves two wins away from their sixth appearance in The CWS and a chance at their third CWS Championship. The Golden Bears advance as the Houston Regional Champions, ousting the host and overall 8 seed, The Rice Owls, and also winning two of three from The Baylor Bears. Their opponents, The Dallas Baptist Patriots, advance as the Fort Worth Regional Champions, beating the host TCU Horned Frogs along the way.

The Golden Bears and The Patriots will square off in the only Super Regional not hosted by any of the eight highest seeds. For whatever reason(s), their Super Regional will be at The University of Santa Clara; IMO way more than a lil strange, especially since The Broncos were not a part of this year's CWS. Image

In other Super Regionals, the overall 1 seed Virginia Cavaliers host The University of California Irvine Anteaters; 2 seed Florida hosts Mississippi State; 3 seed North Carolina hosts that eternally damnable junior university; 4 seed South Carolina hosts UConn; 5 seed Florida State hosts Texas A & M; 6 seed Vanderbilt hosts Oregon State; and 7 seed, brandyb's Texas Longhorns host THE ICEMAN's Arizona State Sun Devils.

I guess that TIEFLY is the man... It's looking like he is the only one of us posting to the "Baseball" thread, who ever seriously played the game beyond Little League.

TIEFLY, if you're listening, I guess that makes you a ringer for the "ScaRatings" baseball team. For you other guys, tryouts for the team will be pretty soon. DANTE is the coach, but he hasn't decided where the tryouts will be yet. Find your glove, it probably will need a little neetsfoot oil, if it has been sitting in the attic as long as mine has.

Okay guys, choose your positions. Right now it looks like TIEFLY will be the starting center fielder, and I'll put myself on the mound for the first game.. That leaves 7 more positions, but you could probably say 8, 'cause I doubt I will last a full inning on the mound.

p.s. If someone grabs your position, before you do, don't worry. We're expecting injuries, so DANTE is accepting 3 or 4 players for every position, as long as they show up for tryouts with a glove.

........................................ Image

............... Heck, I think I can find my glove. Let's go try out for the "ScaRatings" team.

p.s. I think you all know that this is a fantasy that I just made up, but for kicks pick the position you would like to play. Don't worry, you really don't have to find your old baseball glove.

I played second base in a men's baseball league in Indy for three years.
Our catcher?
Calvin Fisk; brother of Carlton.
He could flat out hit, even though I believe he was 52 at the time.
That the sort of thing you looking for Cloudy?

Stayed up last night to watch the Pirates win in extra innings with a McCoutchen walk-off, bringing them to .500 for the first time in June in forever (18 years?).

As far as playing baseball goes, I got as far as walking onto the WVU baseball team my freshman year, before being asked to walk off the baseball team my freshman year. I played every position but catcher. The end of my baseball career signified the start of my soft ball career. Which also started my beer belly career. Fortunately, only my beer belly career thrived. No air conditioning or PMs on the diamond makes tiefly not miss sports at all.

Yep, exactly what I was looking for.
