The "ScaRatings" gave me no option to delete a duplicate post, so you're stuck with this until the option presents itself again.

That's a possibility, but I think there might be a better explanation. From what I have read, Mantell flew to over 20,000 feet chasing the UFO, without oxygen. After you fly over 10,000 feet, naval aviation rules require pilots to be on oxygen to avoid hypoxia. (If you become hypoxic you can't clap your hands, and expect them to meet.) At that altitude, without oxygen, I have to believe that Mantell either went hypoxic or passed out, and his P-51 fell to the earth, without him being able to control it.

p.s. As I understand it, the UFO that Mantell was chasing was a top secret Navy "Skyhook" balloon, being developed to float across the Soviet Union, and spy on them from an altitude that they couldn't reach.

P51's were high altidude fighters. The pilots wore oxegen masks. No matter, Mantell gave his life defending us. He is a hero.

You're right, but from what I've read Mantell didn't have oxygen in his P-51 that day. If that is correct, I am amazed that he could have piloted his aircraft to over 20,000 feet without it.

Image ........... Image

Hell, I once flew over Mount Fuji in Japan, in my Marine Corps CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter, without being on oxygen. (In blatant violation of Naval Aviation regulations.) I didn't crash and die. I believe I must have been close to 13,000 feet, because Mount Fuji is over 12,000 feet above sea level. I and the crew never passed out, and we landed safely at the Atsugi Air Station that day, after violating Naval Aviation regulations. So it looks like Mantell might have been able to get pretty high up without being on oxygen, especially if he was a nonsmoker, which I wasn't.

Image Image

p.s. Back in the days, when I used to pilot aircraft, Naval regulations said that pilots had to be on oxygen over 10,000 feet.

Does anybody have any thoughts about the Betty and Barney Hill UFO story...?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, get the book "Interrupted Journey" and read it.

Is it true, or is there another explanation...?

Holding my thoughts back until someone else steps forward.

(I guess you all must be busy reading "Interrupted Journey", so until you're done, let's move on to something else.)

How about the energy crisis in the United States...? This crisis isn't something that just happened last week. It has been going on since the late 1960's or early 1970's.

Yeah, I know we are building windmills, and pushing solar energy, but so far these efforts don't seem to be helping the price of gas at the pump, or our utility bills.

With this costly problem for all of us, I have a hard time figuring out why we have not built a new refinery in this country for more than 30 years, why our government is preventing oil companies from exploring for oil offshore, in Alaska, or elsewhere in the United States, or why our government is placing regulations on companies, that stymie their ability to mine for coal. (Shit, that looks like a run on sentence to me.) Lastly, why is it that the only nuclear power plant currently under construction in America, at Watts Bar, Tennessee, which began in 1973, might not be completed until 2012?

The rest of the world is drilling for oil everywhere, and the French get nearly 80% of their electricity from nuclear power plants.

Somehow, I don't believe that windmills or solar panels on our roofs will solve this continuing energy problem, that has been with us for what is now approaching nearly half a century.

(Let's see how much trouble this post get's me into.)

How provocative do I have to be...? I know that there must be a bunch of you smart guys out there, who think I'm full of shit on my previous post. Why aren't you explaining to me why I'm wrong? I would rather not use my "silence is consent" thing again, but how long must I wait, before I have to assume that all of you agree with me on this?

If I don't hear to the contrary in a week, I'm going to send President Obama a letter that says EVERYONE on the "ScaRatings" wants him to open up drilling for oil everywhere off the coast and on the mainland of the United States, that we all want him to put new refineries and nuclear power plants on a fast track for construction, and that he needs to stop government regulations that will stymie coal companies from supplying utility companies with inexpensive coal.

Yep, the Obama administration might shut the "ScaRatings" down after it receives my letter, but to be on the safe side, I won't send it until SCAR has looked it over, and gives me his okay.

Damn it, I would like to hear from you, especially, if you disagree with me. However, I wouldn't mind it if those, who think I might be right, said something too. :D

Let the fray begin...

Image .......... Image .......... Image .......... Image

We need all of the above. Without them, we are headed for very deep kimchi...

Image

Kimchi is good to eat, but I don't think we want to see our country wallowing in it, nor you or I.

p.s. Anyone ever eat kimchi...? How did you like it...?

I don't know if you guys have a Qdoba Merican Grill in your city, or if you get their radio commercials. However, I heard one today that I would like to share with you.

Basically it said that summer is coming in Louisville, because Earth is getting closer to the Sun as summer approaches. Yeah, the commercial went on to tell people that summer is a good time to come and eat at their restaurant. I've got no problem with their food, but I do with their commercial.

I sent them an e-mail about this. Anyone got a guess about what I told them...?

Well, for one thing, the Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, and is farthest from the Sun in July!!

You nailed it man... If you didn't get an "A" in your astronomy class, give me your professor's e'mail address, and I'll see what I can do...

Yep, the seasons have nothing to do with the Earth's proximity to the Sun. It's all about the tilt of the Earth's axis. which I know that all of you smart guys know. :D

p.s. If you guys can find the time, e-mail the Qdoba Mexican Grill folks, and tell them that they need to change their commercial, and get their money back from the stupid ad agency, that wrote that commercial for them. If you do, you will be doing a good thing, because today's youth don't learn squat in school. They learn from commercials.

p.p.s. Though this probably belongs in the "English Language" thread, the 1960's commercial, "Winston tastes Good, Like a Cigarette Should!", should have used the word "as" instead of "like". Hell, tomorrow I'll toss that one into the "English Language" thread, and see if it can stir anything up.

(Belated edit: I put the "Winston tastes Good..." question on the "English Language" thread tonight, and you guys have an advantage in answering it, because I gave you information here that I didn't on that other thread. Damn it, I'm rooting for one of you guys, who read this thread, to get the answer first.)

Though the Obama administration has already decided that New York City will get the last Space Shuttle to dispaly, I think this is political bullshit. As I understand it the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, and the Houston Space Center in Texas are getting the shaft. Somebody tell me that politics has nothing to do with this.

Image

p.s. New York City has little or nothing to do with the Space Shuttle Program.

I'll take the bet...

I believe there are those, who believe the Mayan Calendar predicts that the World will end on December 21, 2012. I say it won't, but if think it will, tell me how much you want to bet. If you're right, I will pay you on December 22, 2012.

Actually, for the Mayans their world ended many centuries ago.

p.s. If you have never seen it, watch the Mel Gibson movie, "Apocalypto". I think it is a great movie worth seeing.

You are absolutely correct. The Earth is much closer to the sun, when it's winter in the northern hemisphere. Summer, fall, winter and spring on earth depend on just two things: which hemisphere you are in and the tilt of the Earth's axis.

Can anyone guess why I put this photo up here...?

You are partially right, but obviously you are too young, and don't have a clue to the real answer, because of your youth.

p.s. You young guys need us old guys to teach you stuff that you never experienced.

Okay, time has run out on this one. I didn't think the question was all that obscure, but it looks like it was. You probably had to be older to figure it out. Specifically, it would have helped, if you watched the TV "Howdy Doody" program back in the 1950's. The gal in the picture was Princess Summerfall Winterspring, who's name applies pretty well to the seasonal question that preceded.

The actress was Judy Tyler, who's short life ended in a car accident after making the movie "Jailhouse Rock" with Elvis Presley.

Image ..........Image

I know the true story why Judy Tyler left the "Howdy Doody" show, but I will save that for another day.

I never saw the Howdy show in color and I do not remember the PRINCESS in a hat. The picture looks like the empress Theodora. Good for Judy, I liked her.

Judy Tyler and several other cast members of the "Howdy Doody" show confronted the producers asking for more pay, because the show had become the #1 kids TV program, and making a gazillion bucks. (They should have been in the Peanut Gallery, because they were making peanuts at the time.) The producers basically told them to go F themselves, and fired them. Princess Summerfall Winterspring remained a character on the show, but now she became a marionette.
