ICEMAN, don't start smoking...! Quit now, before you buy the second pack of those filthy things...! You don't want to become a pariah, treated with revulsion and disdain wherever you go. Yeah, there was a time when smoking was cool, and everybody, who was anybody, lit up. However, that time is long gone, and today smokers are regarded as the lowest of the low by society.

Worse yet, smoking could shorten your life. If the anti-smoking NAZIs don't shoot you first, there's the possibility that the cigarettes might make you get very sick some day, and kill you too.

YODA, that's pretty gruesome. Perhaps I should quit smoking before I die, and miss seeing the festivities at my funeral, sealed in a closed coffin, because nobody would want to view my disgusting corpse.

Last night, during a break at live trivia at Saint's, when I went outside to sneak a cigarette, I got into a conversation with a group of older ladies about smoking. One of the gals (Probably in her mid 70's.) said, "A lot of my friends told me to quit smoking, because it was going to kill me. They're all dead now, and I'm still puffing away."

A very poor excuse to continue smoking if you ask me. It doesn't mean you won't live to be 98 (or so) if you continue smoking, but the odds would be better if you quit. Your anecdote simply proves that some people beat the odds.

p.s. My post wasn't intended to be an excuse for continuing smoking, and I wasn't trying to prove anything. I just thought it was a humorous story.

I've heard that N.Y.C. wants to ban the E-cigarette in bars. One of the reasons for this that I read was that they set a bad example for children.

Heck, the only thing that an E-cigarette puts into the air is water vapor. Admittedly, this could contribute to global warming, because water vapor in the atmosphere is a major cause of global warming.

If these busy bodies really wanted to set a positive example for children, they'd stop being politicians and encourage everyone else to do likewise.
This issue has rarely been about public health or children's poor imprinting decisions.
It's mostly been about eliminating a habit people find noxious and offensive.
I have no problem with that.
Just don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining.

It is a crusade to abolish smoking in the United States. Those who still dare to smoke are treated as pariahs by those who crusade against smoking, and they will not stop attacking smokers until smoking is banned in the country.

This is my ox that is being gored today. Your ox may be next.

Gotta run, and go outside to smoke my last cigarette tonight in sub freezing temperatures. (Geez, I sure hope this doesn't get me in trouble for contributing to Global Warming.)

Second hand smoke might not be a health risk. Here is some information that you won't hear on "NPR" or read in the "New York Times".

"A large-scale study found no clear link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer, undercutting the premise of years of litigation including a Florida case that yielded a $350 million settlement.

The article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute details a study of 76,000 women over more than a decade, which found the usual link between smoking and cancer. Lung cancer was 13 times more common in current smokers, and four times more common in former smokers, than in non-smokers.

The study found no statistically significant relationship between lung cancer and exposure to passive smoke, however. Only among women who had lived with a smoker for 30 years or more was there a relationship that the researchers described as “borderline statistical significance.” Over at the Velvet Glove, Iron Fist blog, however, journalist Christopher Snowden notes “there’s no such thing as borderline statistical significance. It’s either significant or it’s not,” and the reported hazard ratio was not."

My words now:

The entire attack on second hand smoke is based on interviewing people with cancer (mostly elderly) and asking them if they were ever exposed to second hand smoke. No other possible causes were addressed or considered. This doesn't sound like science to me. It sounds like anti-smoking zealots looking for answers that would confirm what they wanted to hear.

I have done that, at my usual NTN hangout, the Pied Piper Bar in Sacramento. For technical and lengthy reasons that I won't get into, this bar does allow smoking inside, despite the California laws that was supposed to outlaw smoking inside bars. Anyway, a lot of people at the Pied Piper smoke inside the bar, and there is not much (if any) air conditioning inside. When you leave the bar to go home, your clothes reek of cigarette smoke.

But I don't smoke cigarettes, I smoke cigars, and even then, only on occasion.

One time, the bar owner chastised me for my cigar smoking, because it was disturbing the other patrons. I was thinking, "Gee, everyone else here smokes. But my cigar is bothering the other smokers?" This probably shows you how bad it must be.

It's amazing as how some cigarette smokers have complained about cigar smoking. I have seen it several times as well. Also amazing is the fact that several Indian Casinos in SoCal don't allow cigar or pipe smoking, but bring the cigarettes on in. Personally, I prefer to be outside with a cigar anyway because I enjoy it more in the open air and it gives me an excuse to get some exercise by taking a walk.

Now an even better incentive to be a pipe smoker arises. Those guys along with many other well-known individuals were known to prefer pipes or cigars.

You forgot to include the publisher of Playboy magazine, Hugh Hefner. He is (or was) a pipe smoker, but I don't know if he still is.

A law recently passed in Kentucky makes non-tobacco, electronic cigarettes subject to the same restrictions that real cigarettes are. It wouldn't surpise me if candy cigarettes will be next.

(I am not sure if this new law only applies to the sale of E cigarettes to minors, or if it also applies to adults using them in bars and other places.)

On the radio program "Coast to Coast AM" tonight, a caller said he was going to light a cigarette, as he began talking. Art Bell scolded the caller for smoking, and then Art went on to talk about mutual destruction and why we needed nuclear war heads. (Not a joke.)

It's come to this, smokers are viewed as worse than nuclear bombs.

Last Wednesday Congress debated whether sailors and Marines should be allowed to smoke. (I'm not joking.) I don't have the full story yet, but I will get it.

Hell, all of my C-Rations came with a tiny pack of cigarettes, when I was in the Corps. All of the aircraft I flew had ashtrays for the pilots. The flight suits we were issued had a pocket on the left leg for your cigarettes.

What ever happened to "Smoke 'em, if you've got 'em...?

Considering the number of deaths worldwide from cigarette smoking, they probably are worse. Five million deaths from smoking every year, and possibly eight million annually by 2030.

Old addictions die hard I guess. I guess our military has as much right to puff away as anyone else, but knowing now how dangerous it is, why would they want to? (Maybe peer pressure...)
