"Hugo's House of Horrors" (1990) was a great DOS game. It was fun to play, and full of tongue-in-cheek humor. I had forgotten about this game until I stumbled across the empty sleeve that it came in. (Not worried about the empty sleeve, I'm pretty sure that I have the 5 1/4 inch floppy somewhere around here.)

Here are a few screen shots:

This was a game where you had to type in stuff to get things done. Yep, it was primitive by today's standards, but back then it was fun.

Here's a link to how the game played, with commentary:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMfS7mtCdqU

There were several sequels to the original game: "Hugo II, Whodunit?" (1991), "Hugo III, Jungle of Doom" (1992), and "Nightmare 3-D" (1994)

"Sailing" (1983) was an old DOS game created by Dave Greenbaum. It presented a top-down view of the land and sea, but your boat appeared as a side view. As I recall you had some kind of mission to complete, and you had to avoid dangers such as storms, whirlpools that periodically popped up, running into land, or sailing off the edge of the sea. You got extra points for rescuing people lost at sea. It was a fairly mindless game, and came on a 5 1/4" floppy.

It seems to be so bad that I am unable to find any screen shots or video of the game. I doubt anyone here has ever heard of this game, let alone ever played it. However, if there any Internet sleuths, who want a challenge, see if you can find any screen shots or video of this long dead, obscure early DOS game.

p.s. There is a possibility that the Dynetron Company may have made another game with the name "Sailing" later. The one I'm looking for had the lousy DOS graphics that you would have found back in 1983.

I need help finding a game from the past...

Many years ago there was a DOS game I used to love to play. I would guess that it was probably created in the early to mid 1980's. There was a little guy, who started at the top left of the screen, and had to work his way down through a maze of steps (platforms) to get to the exit at the lower right of the screen. He could hop up to steps (platforms) above him, when he had to evade poison darts that got fired at him from the right side of the screen. I vaguely remember that there might have been things he needed to pick up on his way to the exit to the next screen. Once he made it to the next screen, the game would become more difficult.

I have searched for this game on Google with no luck.

If any of you can help me find this game, I will be more than thankful. If this is any help, I think the game's title had the word "caverns" in it, but as long ago as it was, I could be wrong.

Cloudy, I remember that game too. Must have been the late 80s when I played it. It was on a friends computer, I will ask him if he remembers it next time I see him.

I used to have an old 8086 computer. The only thing we used to for was to play Family Feud that had to be loaded from a 5 1/4 floppy. No HD in that computer.

Mudee, if you could come up with the name of that game, I will be forever indebted to you.

Heck, I've got the old "Family Feud" game on a 5 1/4 floppy still in its box somewhere around here. (I believe that there have been many new versions of the original "Family Feud" computer game.)

What other old computer games did you play back in the 1980's?

The only other ones I can remember off the top of my head was matching the state capital to the state (that was early 80s and I dont remember the name of it) and the original Sim City in the late 80s.

I mostly played my Atari 2600 or went to the local arcade and played Galaga, Donkey Kong, or Pinball machines back then.

Hugo sure looks the original King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry games. Is it another Sierra franchise, Cloudy?

Yes, it was a Sierra game, and some say that it was inspired by the original "Leisure Suit Larry" game. This could very well be true, as they both have tongue-in-cheek dialogs and primitive game play. However, "Leisure Suit Larry" (1987) had much better graphics than "Hugo's House of Horrors" (1990), and "Leisure Suit Larry" was a much more complicated game that took a whole lot longer to work your way through than "Hugo's House of Horrors". Perhaps, Sierra created "Hugo's House of Horrors" as a way to sell a cheap game, that would bring revenues into the firm. I don't know enough about "King's Quest" to comment on any similarities "Hugo's House of Horrors" might have with it. It has also been said that "Hugo's House of Horrors" is very similar to the Lucasarts game, "Maniac Mansion" (1987), though, the creator of "Hugo's House of Horrors" denies that he was aware of "Maniac Mansion".

PENGWN, have you played any of these games?

"Awakening: The Goblin Kingdom" (2011) is perhaps one of the worst games that Big Fish ever put out. Basically, it is nothing more than a puzzle solving game, with little else of interest. Some of the puzzles are very easy, and some are very difficult, because they don't have instructions as to what you need to do. If someone ever offers it to you for free, think twice before you take it.

As bad as it is, here's some video of the game:

I guess I should give "Maniac Mansion" (1987) it's due now, seeing that I mentioned it. I know I've got the old 5 1/4" floppy of it somewhere, and I know that I played the game many years ago. However, I don't remember much more about the game.

Image Image Image Image

So here's some video of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiBx1ndz3GY

Damn it IS a lot like "Hugo's House of Horrors"...!

Cloudy, I talked to the guy today about the DOS game. He says he thinks he still has all of them in a box somewhere and he will take a look. I also talked to a guy that works for me today and he remembered the game too, but not the name of it. Hopefully we will have an answer soon.

Keep up the good work, Mudee, I'm counting on you.

I'm pretty sure the title had the word "caverns" or "caves" in it.

"Hidden Mysteries: November 1963" (2012) is a game I picked up this afternoon. I'm guessing it's a game that "Big Fish" swallowed up. I haven't had time other than to load it to my computer, and play about five minutes of it, but so far it looks interesting. The game focuses on the Kennedy assassination, which is something that I am very interested in. Perhaps when I finish it, I will know the true answer as to what happened. If I find out that everyone, who contributed to making this game, has either died or disappeared, I think I will delete this post.

p.s. It seems that "Big Fish" has altered the beginning of the title from "Hidden Mysteries" to "Lost Secrets".

Here's some video of the game:

"Sonic the Hedgehog" (1991) was a game my son played on his Sega Genesis console. He was pretty good at it, and would let dad play the game too. I never got very proficient at it, but it was fun. Did any of you young guys ever play this game? (I believe that there have been a few more than a gazillion "Sonic Hedgehog" games and spin offs after the first one.)

Here's some video from the original "Sonic Hedgehog" game with voice over from a guy, who seems to know it well:

At first I thought "The Game is A-Foot" was a joke, so I Googled it. Son-of-a-gun, it actually exists...! However, it looks like it is an "iTunes" app.

Here's a link that tells about the game:

http://download.cnet.com/The-Game-Is-Af ... 30065.html

I Googled some more and found a web site, "Games Dreams", that would supposedly would allow you to play it online.

http://gamesdreams.com/bestnewtopgames.php?page=26

The site had page after page of games. There were forty to a page, and over 137 pages. I finally gave up trying to find it, after wasting way too much time. However, I did find a few that PENGWN might be interested in. Not joking, here they are:

"Penguin Quest"
"My Penguin"
"Air Penguin"
"Racing Penguin Flying"
"Crazy Penguin Wars: Tiny Duels"

The "Mario Bros." (1983) arcade game goes a long way back. I think I might have played it once. Did any of you old farts ever play this game at the arcade?

Here's some video of the game:

"Super Mario Bros." (1985) was a game my son played on his Nintendo console. I tried it a few times, but my son was the master of the game.

Here's some video of that old Nintendo game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aw4JccvxU-s

p.s. There have been a gazillion "Mario Bros." games released over the years. However, the first two, which I have just posted, are the only ones I've ever played. I was amazed when I finally made it to the flag, and got to enter the door to the castle to play the next level on the Nintendo console game.

Ah, another person, who used a lot of tokens at the video arcade... Sadly, I believe that most all of those arcades are now gone, and we have grown old, but we still remember the fun we had back in the day.

p.s. I loved "Galaga". Remember this:

There is a mexican fast food restaurant down the street from me that still has a Galaga machine like that. The buttons need replacing, but it still works for the most part. I would like to find one for my game room some day.

For now I have one of these. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Namco-Museum-DS/4128041#Item+Description The graphics and game play are really good for such a cheap game. It plugs into your TVs RCA ports.

Yeah the older single-game cabinets are getting harder and harder to find. The newer ones you see now have multiple games you can play in them now. A restaurant we frequent has a galaga/ms. pac man machine in it. Still brings back many great memories no matter how many games it can do though :-)

.................... (Screen shot from "Galaxian")

I think I might have goofed up, the first one I played was called "Galaxian" (1979). It was later that I played the sequel "Galalga" (1981). The games were so similar that it is difficult to find differences between them. Either way I loved them both.

Here's some video of "Galaxian", with voice over:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAg1PrmjTi8

p.s. As I recall, if you shot down the yellow attacker and the two others that came down with it, you got extra points.

p.p.s. There was a third update to the game in 1984 called Gaplus, but I never saw it.

There was worlds of difference between the two. Galaga was beatable, Galaxian was not. Complete stage 255, the next screen reads stage 0 and freezes. Galaxian was single shot while Galaga was double shot. No double ship possibility on Galaxian. No bonus stages.

Most importantly, the famous bug/trick in Galaga.

And don't forget the 3rd game in the trilogy, Gaplus, which I did not care for.
