"Who's Minding the Mint?" (1967) is truly an obscure movie today, and I will venture a guess that none of you have ever heard of it, let alone seen it. I recommend that you try to find this movie and watch it. It's really funny, and has a pretty good cast including: Jim Hutton, Dorothy Provine, Milton Berle, Joey Bishop, Walter Brennan, Bob Denver, and more. Yeah, it never got nominated for any Academy Awards, but the silly plot will make you laugh. It's worth watching, and if any of you do, I'm sure you will thank me for recommending it to you.

Here's the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2-D7-MOweY

(The trailer doesn't do the movie justice.)

Never heard of it? Not only have I seen it, but I had the 1967 Dell Who's Minding the Mint comic book to boot.
It had Milton Berle & crew boating in the tunnel on the cover like they were crossing the Delaware.
I had an extensive collection of those Dell movie comics from the 60s. They were great.
Between those and all of the Classics Illustrated comics I owned, I practically never had to read a book or watch a movie.
But I'm dumb and stubborn. I did anyway.

SPOTES, I should have excluded you, when I said, "... I will venture a guess that none of you have ever heard of it, let alone seen it." I should have known that you had seen "Who's Minding the Mint". I'm afraid to watch it again, because it might not seem as funny as the first time I saw it. :D

"Iron Eagle" (1986), staring Louis Gossett, Jr., Jason Gedrick, and David Suchet, is not a great movie dramatically, but it's an uplifting, high-five action flick. There isn't much of a plot, but I really liked it nonetheless. After a few brewskis this movie will make you want to drive down to the Air Force recruiter and swear in, if you're young enough and have 20-20 vision.

Here's the trailer:

Here's a little bit more footage from the movie:

Pretty weak movie. Basically, if you can fly a prop plane, you can fly a jet. That aboot says it.

Didn't you watch the movie? Doug Masters had been up with his pilot father tons of times and had logged more hours in the simulator than most pilots on the base.

Betcha didn't know David Suchet actually survived the final dogfight and went on to hijack an Oceanic Airlines jet.

Yep, I was having to recreate a longer post that disappeared before I submitted it, and decided to submit each part of it, after a few sentences and links, as I tried to recreate it, so as to not have to start from the beginning again. You jumped in before I was finished. Patience my friend. :D

Yep, it isn't a great movie, but I think I admitted that in my post. However, this thread is not about great movies. It is about obscure or fairly obscure movies that you liked.

p.s. Before you criticize prop plane pilots anymore, I need to tell you a story...

There was a student Naval Aviator at Pensacola, who amazed his instructor pilot many years ago. The instructor pulled the engine off after a touch-and-go at an outlying practice field to test his student's ability to handle a low altitude emergency. Without hesitation the student pulled the nose up, kicked in full left (right ?) rudder, turned the plane around on a dime, and glided it back to the runway that they had just taken off from. The amazed instructor asked him, where he ever learned that trick. The student told his instructor that he was a cropduster pilot before joining the Navy, and had done that many times before. By the way cropdusters don't fly jets... (I believe this to be a true story.)

"Aces Iron Eagle III" (1992) staring Louis Gossett Jr., Rachel McLish, and Paul Freeman is the third in the "Iron Eagle" series. What makes it so neat, is that Chappy and his buddies are flying World War II aircraft against modern war planes. Yeah, ICEMAN, this is not what anyone would consider a great movie, but it's a lot of fun to watch, especially for those, who love vintage aircraft from over 70 years ago. I say, go ahead and rent it, order an extra large pizza, kick back, down some brewskis, and enjoy a movie that doesn't require any deep thinking. Just enjoy it, because it's fun to watch. :D

Chappy and his buddies fly an American P-38 Lightning, a British Spitfire, a German Me-109, and a Japanese Mitsubishi Zero as they go against the drug cartel's jet fighters.

Here's the trailer:

The current index of "Obscure movies you like..." is sitting on #499. The next one is a big one. Somebody, who steps forth before anyone else, with their movie that they liked, will have the honor of making the 500th movie post on this thread. I will not do it, so it's up for grabs guys and gals. :D

p.s. Not to put too much pressure on you, but please try to make it a good one.

Well, in honor of #500, here's my choice...

Recently, I rented out (from my public library) John Cassavetes' 1970 movie, "Husbands", which featured himself, Peter Falk, and Ben Gazzara. They play three middle-aged married men, who are also close friends. After attending the funeral of another close friend, they become increasingly aware of their own mortality, and then they impulsively decide to go on a weekend trip to London.

It's long, rambling, and not much of a story. But good characterizations and the acting makes it worth a look-see.

Most of Cassavetes' films are an acquired taste; you either like them or are irritated by it. Your opinion may vary.

I like Cassavettes but one of my favorites is "The Mask of Dmitrios". Its based on an Eric Ambler story and stars Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Zachary Scott. My apologies if it has already been named. It is shown once in a while on TCM.

CLIPPR, it could have been you. You missed being #500 by a mere 4 hours and 14 seconds.

p.s. You are the first to mention "The Mask of Dmitrios" (1944). However, don't worry about it. The is nothing wrong with suggesting a movie that somebody else already has. I don't want anyone to hold off on posting a movie, because they feel like they have to scroll through 500 or more movies to make sure that it hasn't already been mentioned. I try to check for duplicates before adding them to the directory, and when I goof up SPOTES lets me know.

"The Cider House Rules" (1999) starring Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, and Michael Caine is a very good drama that tells an interesting story, based on a John Irving novel. The movie begins in an orphanage, but moves out into the real world. I highly recommend this film.

Here's the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty3-8cn_Bs8

p.s. Though it did win two Oscars at the time, I believe it has fallen off the radar today. Once again, I highly recommend this film, if you have never seen it.

p.p.s. WARNING... It is likely that this movie will bring a tear or two to your eyes before it's over.

"The Full Monty" (1997) starring Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, William Snape, Steve Huison, Tom Wilkinson, Paul Barber, and Hugo Speer is a comedic drama about six unemployed English steel workers, who decide to start their own male stripper act to make some money. I can't recommend this movie to everyone, and I certainly would not suggest that you watch it with your young children, grandkids, or preacher. However, it does not even come close to being a porn flick, and I think it's okay for most grown ups to watch. I will recommend it to any adults on this thread, who don't think that they will find this movie offensive. (I tend to be a little bit prudish, but I liked it.)

I have "The Full Monty" (special edition) as part of my DVD collection, but I can hardly call it an "obscure movie". It was a low-budget, but very commercially successful film. And it later became adapted as a hit musical (with Americanized characters) on the London and Broadway stage. Last year, it was adapted again as a stage play in London.

The movie also became an inspiration for an episode of "The Drew Carey Show", where Drew and his friends do a male striptease. :o

How does one define what an "obscure movie" is...?

This is a question that was bounced around a couple times earlier on this thread. It seems that the answer is that what qualifies as an "obscure movie" is very subjective. My feeling is that if someone thinks a movie they liked is now obscure, for whatever reason, then for them it qualifies, and let them post it, even if others might not agree.

Personally, I will post movies that are generally older flicks I liked, that I feel have dropped off the radar, and I think that there is a liklihood that a lot of people have never seen them, even if they were popular back when they were first released. Yeah, I guess I've put a few up here that weren't terribly obscure, but what the heck...? Is this a definition of an "obscure movie? No, it's just for me, and everyone else can define it as they want.

I guess obscurity, when it comes to movies, is in the mind of the poster.

p.s. The underline was mine, not SEKA's.

On my recent visit to see LUREED & NICO, I saw "God Bless America", directed by Bobcat Goldwaith and featuring Bill Murray's brother.

For those that despise shows like American Idol, such as myself, enjoy.

Tiefly's "God Bless America" (2011) certainly qualifies as an obscure movie in my book, even though it's fairly recent. I don't have it in my collection, and have never seen it, but here's the trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdBJRfuHUPo

Heck, it might not be all that bad. Maybe I'll add it to my collection.

"The River Wild" (1994) staring Meryl Streep, Kevin Bacon, and David Strathairn was a darn good movie, and I recommend it to any of you, who have never seen it. There is some violence in the movie, but don't let that ruin the beauty of the river and the wonderful scenery of the forest as the rafters battle to stay alive.

Here are two trailers:

I was all set to go out and buy "ZOTZ!" (1962) on Amazon.com, after watching the trailer you gave us. It was the type of odd movie that I would have added to my collection. Yeah, I know that no one would consider this a great movie, but it looked like a goofy fun flick to me. Sadly, I got quite a shock when I found it on Amazon.com. A new CD of the movie would have cost about $20.00, and the used copies weren't much cheaper. (One used copy had a price tag (included shipping) of around $54.00. (They'll never sell that one.)

I'm sorry, ICMAN, even though I think it's a good recommendation, and I would like to own it, it's just too expensive for me these days.

p.s. I'm guessing that the high price is because there aren't lotz of "ZOTZ!" CDs out there for people to buy.

p.p.s. I'll try to wait the sellers out, and see if what they're asking for the movie comes down. I'll keep checking, and if I can find it for less than $10.00, I'll buy it.

p.p.p.s. I don't go on eBay anymore, because they totally goofed up my password, and I was unable to fix the problem many years ago. However, If anyone can find "ZOTZ!" on eBay for less than $10.00, please let me know. Thanks.

Well, if you have Directv & if you have the Sony Movie Channel & if you are able to view movies 'on demand' then, you can view it any time this month. Unfortunately, it's already next month where you are so.......

I've got some Time-Warner cable thing now. I just use it for a fast Internet connection. Dave and Ray, who live with me, watch movies on it downstairs. I'll ask them if we can get what you are talking about. Shit, I'm old, and don't understand these new fangled things. (Soon to be 68 years old.)

p.s. ICEMAN, I'm still trying to figure this out: "Unfortunately, it's already next month where you are so......."
