Where is SPOTES when you need him...?

Thanks to both TIEFLY and Liljol for your help, but I'm looking for the name of a movie that was probably made for TV sometime in the 1970's.

SPOTES is at the Diet Mt. Dew factory doing spot quality control inspections just in case some Elk River water made it to the plant.

Sorry, Cloudy.
You pretty much only have one shot with the vast majority of made-for-TV movies.
Apparently I missed mine with this one.

"Silent Running" (1972) starring Bruce Dern is a pretty good movie. I'm sure that some of you have seen it, but I think that most of you haven't. If you haven't, go out and get it, I think you will enjoy it. I did...!

Here's the trailer:

(I've decided to move the directory of movies on this thread up to here. Having to page back such a long way to find it is too much for most people, so it's here now. Addtionally, as it grew it would have eventually started to push movies that came after page 23 off the pages that they were listed on. I will no longer update the old directory on page 23, but I will leave it there so as to not screw up the pages that movies are listed on.)

A DIRECTORY TO ALL MOVIES ON THIS THREAD

Here is a listing of all of the movies that have been recommended or mentioned on this thread, so far. With the thread growing to 23 pages, 299 movies, and 554 posts, it has become difficult at best for anyone, who might want to refer back to something, to ever find it. So I took a couple minutes to create this directory. I have done my best to list every movie that was recommended or mentioned in order. They are displayed by the page they appear on. I have given credit to those, who first posted each movie. I regret that I didn't think to keep track of which ones were recommendations, and which ones were merely mentioned. Duplicate recommendations were skipped, when I found them, but a few may have slipped by. (If anyone finds any mistakes or things I skipped over, please let me know, and I will correct them.) (Obviously this thread has grown to 33 pages, 437 movies, and God knows how many posts today, but I decided to leave the original introduction as it was, and not edit it.)

FYI, Cloudy:

#130 should read The Stratton Story
#201 is The Night Strangler, not The Night of the Stranger
I still refuse to be forever linked with #205
Page 16, the first three should be credited to TIAMAT, not TIMTAT
#268 should read The Swarm
#269 is just Piranha
#277 should be The Valley of Gwangi not Valley of the Gwangi
#414 is just The Bicycle Thief

Thanks SPOTES. It's too late for me to fix them tonight, but Good Lord willing, I'll try to fix them tomorrow. :D

Well,I fixed them all. I deleted the U.K. alternant title "Bicycle Thieves". I even added that you deny mentioning the hated #205.

However, much to my horror, I discovered that my numbering of the movies went #200, #201, #202, #201, #202, #203. Am I going to take the time to adjust everything that came up after the correct #202 up two numbers...? Not tonight...

p.s. SPOTES, thank you again for helping me on this thread. :D

"Swiss Family Robinson" (1960) is a Disney adaptation of the classic novel. Johann David Wyss probably wouldn't recognize it, if he was alive today. However, I'm recommending it, because I think it's one that your kids or grandkids would enjoy. Heck, you might too, if you've never seen it before, but most adults probably won't put this movie on their top 100 list. It's a kid's movie, and a pretty good one.

I couldn't find a decent trailer for the movie, or any short snippets of it, so as much as I don't like to, here is a link where you can watch the full movie:

In honor of the passing of Maximilian Schell (1930–2014), the obscure and somewhat forgotten film of his is"The Black Hole" (1979). The Disney picture, about a research vessel finds a missing ship, commanded by a mysterious scientist (Schell), on the edge of a black hole, was not only Disney's first fray in live action sci-fi but its the first Disney film rated PG. Its also stars Anthony Perkins ("Pyscho") Robert Forster ("Jackie Brown"), Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, and Ernest Borgnine

The Black Hole is somewhat forgotten?
I don't think I'm ever going to be able to drive it forcefully from my cranium.

I think "The Black Hole" is a great recommendation, especially to watch with your kids or grandkids, who have never heard of or seen the movie.

One of my favorite movies of the 21st Century is a British crime movie called "Sexy Beast", from 2000. Stars Ray Winstone, Sir Ben Kingsley, Amanda Redman, and Ian McShane.

Winstone plays an ex-con and former safecracker who has retired to a Spanish villa with his wife and enjoys the easy life with his wife and friends. But one day, a sociopath from his criminal past flies in from London to recruit him to do one more bank-robbery job. Great acting and done with lots of style. Once you see this movie, you would hardly believe Ben Kingsley once played Gandhi in a movie.

"Sexy Beast" (2000) sounds like a good one to me. I guess this is yet one more flick that I will have to add to my collection. Good recommendation SEKA... :D

Here's the trailer:

p.s. If it was released in 2000, I think it would be a 20th century film.

p.p.s. SEKA, right now I believe you have added the most recently released movie to this thread. (Keep 'em comin'...)

A great little short film from 1965 that I'd forgotten about until I came across it's soundtrack recently. Best of all it's on youtube.

Speaking of a good soundtrack, Repo Man has one, and it's funny for the use of generic products throughout the movie.

Love Miller!

Am I going to have to start hiding your nightcaps, Cloudy?
I stopped counting after the first 100 films on the recap when there were already 16 movies on the list at that point that are newer than Sexy Beast.
Idiocracy, the movie that started all of the nonsense on this thread, is six years newer than Sexy Beast.

Just saw a documentary on Netflix the other day. It's called "Freakonomics" (2010), based on the 2005 best-selling book of the same name by economist Steven Levitt and journalist Stephen Dubner.

Interesting, and controversial in its findings. Perhaps the biggest contentious issue is that the authors suggest that decrease in crime in the U.S. during the 1990's is because of the long-term effects of the Supreme Court's decision on Roe v. Wade, leading to more wanted children with better upbringings.

Finally got a chance to see a movie that I haven't got around to seeing for the longest time. It's "Thief" (1981), starring James Caan, Tuesday Weld, Jim Belushi, and Robert Prosky.

"Silent Running" (1972) starring Bruce Dern is a pretty good movie. I'm sure that some of you have seen it, but I think that most of you haven't. If you haven't, go out and get it, I think you will enjoy it. I did...!

Here's the trailer:

That movie was one of the earliest examples with an environmental theme.

"Topkapi" (1964) was a darn good movie, and I will recommend it to all of you, who have never seen it, if you can find it anywhere today. It has some very good actors, including: Melina Mercouri, Peter Ustinov, Maximilian Schell, and Robert Morley. It has an interesting plot and good acting. A group of jewel thieves try to bypass security and steal a fortune in emeralds from the Topkapi museum in Istanbul. The movie will have you sitting on the edge of your chair as you hope that they can pull the heist off.

Here's some video from the movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Giv4-gNKePg

Will their plan work? Will they escape with the Jewels? You will have to watch it to find out...

"The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" (1974) is a thriller starring Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, and Martin Balsam. (It has been remade twice.) I highly recommend this movie to those of you, who have never seen it, and won't be upset when you discover that you have to pause the movie, while you pop a second bowl of popcorn.

Here's some footage of the movie:
