Congrats to liljol's Cal Golden Bears for dispatching the much loathed UofEh? mildrats this last Sunday. 8-)
Unfortunately my Sun Devils dropped the ball & let that junior university get by them. Oh well.

For the fourth Sunday of February 2012...

Image Image Image Image Image Image

Wonder of wonders, my California Golden Bears men's hoops team have raised themselves into 4th place in the Pac-12, after getting a very rare sweep of the Oregon schools. Image Meanwhile, THE ICEMAN's Arizona State Sun Devils suddenly find themselves a game behind The Golden Bears, after an inexplicable hucking by those damnable seattle fuskies.

Those damnable tucson mildrats remain in a tie with The Ducks for 1st, with the southern campus bruins tied in the loss column and needing a win today over The Trojans to stay there. The race to the finish could be way more than a lil interesting, as The Golden Bears' last three games are in the friendly confines of Haas Pavilion, against Utah, Colorado, and that eternally damnable junior university. 8-) Meanwhile, The Sun Devils' last three games are all away (Bruins, Trojans, mildrats). :(

Should The Golden Bears win out and either or both of the mildrats or The Ducks lose a game, The Golden Bears have tiebreakers on both. However, should The Golden Bears not win out and The Sun Devils tie The Golden Bears, The Sun Devils have the tiebreaker. :(

Well, hell, so this is way more than a lil early for the first Saturday of March 2012...

Image Image Image Image Image Image

My California Golden Bears men's hoops team have raised themselves into a tie for 3rd place in the Pac-12, after Wednesday's expected win over the hapless utah utes. Image Meanwhile, THE ICEMAN's Arizona State Sun Devils are two games behind The Golden Bears in 6th, after a tough overtime loss to the southern campus bruins.

The Golden Bears are tied with those damnable tucson mildrats, however The Golden Bears have the tiebreaker due to their huge win in mckale hellhole. The Oregon Ducks remain in 1st, a half game ahead of the southern campus bruins. The Golden Bears have a huge game Saturday against Colorado, currently a half game ahead of The Sun Devils, who also have a big game against The Trojans, who are a half game behind The Sun Devils. :o

As for that eternally damnable junior university, they're in 9th, a half game behind those huckable fuskies. Unless that eternally damnable junior university should manage a deep run in The Pac-12 Tournament, IMO they deserve to be relegated to either the CBA or CIT, never mind The Big Dance or NIT.

For the second Sunday of March 2012, Daylight Savings Time...

Image Image Image Image Image Image

Despite horribly bungling away their chance to tie for The Pac-12 regular season championship by inexplicably falling to that eternally damnable junior university :(, The California Golden Bears men's hoops team will be the #2 seed in The Pac-12 Tournament, facing the winner of Wednesday's game between USC-Utah on Thursday. The Golden Bears earned the #2 seed by sweeping The Oregon Ducks and those damnable tucson mildrats to break the three way tie for 2nd.

Meanwhile, THE ICEMAN's Arizona State Sun Devils will hopefully end the wet dreams of that eternally damnable junior university to go to The Big Dance next Wednesday. Image Assuming that The Sun Devils prevail, they will then face the #1 seed, the southern campus bruins.

Well, hell, for The Ides Of March 2012...

Image Image Image Image Image Image

What a godawful, horrible Thursday in The Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament for both THE ICEMAN's Arizona State Sun Devils and my California Golden Bears. At least The Sun Devils kept their game close, though falling to the #1 seeded southern campus bruins.

However, my California Golden Bears grievously bungled away a great chance to make at least the semi-finals by losing to The Utah Utes, whom they had beaten in both their prior games. IMO, that loss, along with the inexplicable losses to that eternally damnable junior university, should be enough to relegate The Golden Bears to the NIT, where they could meet The Sun Devils again.

In an effort to help Liljol out, and breathe new life into what seems to be in danger of becoming a dying thread, I'll post something here. Not sure about all the posts that others have put up here, but it looks like you guys have been talking about college basketball lately, so I will try to stay with the topic.

How about the Big East Conference getting eight teams into NCAA basketball championship, and Louisville getting the top number one ranking in the brackets? I'll be rooting for the Cards, but I'm worried about that great big target that they all will be wearing on the backs of their shirts in the tournament. Yeah, I know that their seeding probably gives them two early wins, but look at the other teams that are in their bracket. Though the Cards are pretty good on defense most of the time, I'm concerned that their tendancy to go into long scoring droughts may be their undoing. I think the Cards, will have a tough way to go to make it to the Georgia Dome.

Good luck to the rest of you, who will be rooting for other teams. :D

For the third Tuesday of March 2012...

Image Image Image Image Image Image

THE ICEMAN's Arizona State Sun Devils open their NIT play Wednesday, hosting The Detroit Titans. The other Pac-12 teams in the NIT play later today; those huckable fuskies travel to BYU, and that eternally damnable junior university will inexplicably have the chance to defend their NIT title against The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in the friendly confines of maples hellhole.

Meanwhile, my California Golden Bears somehow remained in The Big Dance :(, and will play Thursday in the only opening game rematch of the regular season, against The UNLV Runnin' Rebels at the Hewlett-Packard Pavilion in San Jose. Since The Golden Bears are a #12 seed, they're not expected to advance, but should they do, they would face the winner of Syracuse-Montana in the round of 32.

Okay Liljol, I'll be rooting for the Golden Bears. Hope I don't jinx them, because the teams I root for often lose, when they shouldn't.

p.s. I rooted for the Kentucky Wildcats tonight in their opener in the NIT against Robert Morris. That should tell you something.

Sorry Liljol, damn the Orangemen. Syracuse started the season like gangbusters. When Louisville got ranked #1 The 'Cuse came down to the Yum Arena, and beat us on our home court. Ever since then Syracuse has had a up and down season. It's too bad that your guys ran into them on one of their up days. I have not liked the Syracuse baseketball team since 1965, when they came down to Colgate's gymnasium with Dave Bing and Jim Boeheim intending to walk all over us. Syracuse did win, but it took three overtimes for them to do it.

So far the Cards have been doing well, but the real tests are yet to come. I find it hard to believe that they can go the rest of the way without losing to someone.

p.s. It looks like the NCAA selection committee screwed up, when they invited eight Big East teams to the Big Dance. I believe it is either four or five of them that have packed their gym bags now, and gone home.

Belated condolences to THE ICEMAN, as his Arizona State Sun Devils were eliminated by The Baylor Bears in the second round of NIT play Wednesday. :( Meanwhile, those huckable fuskies were eliminated by BYU in their one and done game Tuesday.

Saturday started out as good as it could, with The Alabama Crimson Tide destroying the wet dreams of that eternally damnable junior university of repeating as NIT champions. Image However, my California Golden Bears were eliminated in their round of 32 game by The Syracuse Orangemen, after scoring an upset of The UNLV Runnin' Rebels at the Hewlett-Packard Pavilion in San Jose.

Hopefully you are old enough to remember the days, when UCLA under John Wooden, would win just about every basketball game they played. The Bruins owned the NCAA tournament for so many years, that I thought they always would. It was a dynesty that I thought would never come to an end.

I still remember Wooden's last NCAA tournament in 1975. Kentucky and Louisville both made it the "Final Four", and UCLA beat both of them to win the championship again. Those glory days will probably never return as they were under Wooden, but I think the Bruins will cut down the nets after the championship game again, before too many years roll by.

(I do want to thank UCLA for Denny Crum, who won two national championships coaching the Louisville Cardinals. When Denny was voted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, it was John Wooden, who escorted him to receive the honor.)

I don't think any team will ever come close to UCLA's record back in their glory days. Duke would like to, but as good as they might be, I don't think they can do it.

I hope that there aren't any Dukies here. Let's see how much trouble this gets me into.

I've got a feeling that if there was a polling of college basketball fans, asking them to name the three teams they hated the most, that Duke would show up on 90% of the replies.

I was worried that my Louisville Cardinals would have to play Duke to make it to the Final Four. The Cards have already lost to Duke once this year, and it will be a sad day in Louisville if the Dukies do it again.

Why am I worried...? Duke has an incredible team, and the Cards have a propensity to go on long scoring droughts. However, I am particularly worried about how the referees are going to call the game. Louisville plays a very aggressive defense, which they are allowed to in the Big East, but if the referees start blowing the whistle on every ticky-tacky foul, I can see a long night for the Cards, with their starters sitting on the bench.

What do you West Coast guys think about Steve Alford being given the head coaching job at UCLA...?

p.s. I hope his increase in salary is big enough to take care of the significant increase in taxes that California will be deducting from his pay checks.

There's a cartoon from the 1940's that makes me think of a current college basketball coach.

Here it is:

Image

What coach do you think looks the most like that?

p.s. There are no wrong answers. The nose, shape of the head, and eyes make me think of just one coach. :D

Son-of-a-gun... The University of Louisville won it all. They throttled Duke to get to the Final Four, and then squeaked by Wichita State and Michigan, after trailing by a lot in both games, to cut the nets down in the Georgia Dome. I've been waiting for this since 1986, and I hope to God that the Cardinals can do it again, before another 27 years go by.

p.s. As the Big East Conference is folding, it's nice that they bow out with two teams in the Final Four.

p.p.s. Look out the ACC is about to get a lot better.
