So far my buddy, Dan McGowan, has converted 279 vinyl LPs and 534 cassettes to mp3 files, and added them to my ever growing music library. Add in the 716 CD's we've ripped, and we are at 1,539 albums. We're pretty much done with the cassettes and CDs, but the vinyl LPs have a long, long way to go. Some of the vinyl LPs, that have yet to come, are somewhat obscure, but most are pretty darn good. Any that I decide to pick five songs off of to post here will be ones that I have listened to.

p.s. I actually added these numbers up by myself with pencil and paper. Someone give Liljol a call so he can check it out for another Cloudy mistake that he can ban me for.

I've noticed there are a couple turntables out there in the $100-150 range that convert analog to digital and it's very tempting. What turntable and software are you using?

I'm not converting the vinyl LPs or the cassettes to MP3 files myself. A good friend of mine, Dan McGowan, is doing it for me. He's a genious at this stuff, and I'll ask him what he's using. Better yet, if you want, I think I can put him directly in touch with you about this. It's too late for me to call him tonight, but I'll do it tomorrow. Assuming that Dan doesn't mind, and if you're interested, I'll need you to send me a private message with your phone number or e-mail address.

Jim, I talked to Dan tonight about what he uses to convert vinyl LPs and cassettes to MP3 files. He doesn't use one of the turntables that automatically convert vinyl LPs. He explained to me how he does it, but his explanation went way over my wee little head. He said something about he thought his way of doing it would give a better quality, when you convert them to MP3 files.

I asked him if he would be willing to talk to you on the phone on how he does it, and he said he would be more than happy to. He has given me permission to give you his phone number, if you want to talk to him about this. If you want to, I will send you Dan's phone number in a private message.

Dan is a great guy. Not only is he very friendly, he also knows this shit better than anyone I have ever known. I say go ahead and give Dan a call, I think you will enjoy talking to him. Let me know, if you want to talk to Dan.

p.s. Dan told me that my 1,539 figure was low by what he had, and that the number is over 1,900 albums. (He admitted that there might be a few duplications in his total.)

The Beau Hunks are a Dutch group that has recorded a lot of vintage soundtrack music, especially Hal Roach Studios. Powerhouse written by Raymond Scott is used in lots of Warner Bros. cartoons. Raymond Scott was also one of the early pioneers of electronic music.

You've got to love this guy. He graduated from Yale, and despite that he had them (women) fainting when he sang, he claimed to have a secret sex weapon concealed in his mouth. (No joke.) He could be considered to be the first male vocalist to become a sex idol for the ladies. (He lived from 1901 to 1986.)

Here are the five from Rudy's CD that I ripped to my computer earlier today:

1- "Makin' Whoopee"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2rJNDFY7QM

2- "You Oughta Be In Pictures"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjRxJxak4qA

3- "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSEag7avpQ4

4- "These Foolish Things"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7_RLAmGBrA

5- "You're Driving Me Crazy"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLJl5gsX56I

This guy was great. The songs above are but a few that I'm thinking Rudy recorded before anyone else. (Don't know for sure.) Hang on, here's a biggie... I think Rudy Vallee was one of the first to record "As Time Goes By" back in 1931.

Guys and gals this is a bonus 6th song on this thread. I hope you enjoy it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKW0QZgi79M

p.s. Has the U.S Postal System put Rudy Vallee on a postage stamp yet. Darn I don't know, but if they haven't honored him yet, I think it's God damn time that they did.

(Belated edit: Rudy IS on a U.S. postage stamp...! Here it is...)

Here are five Al Jolson songs from a long, long time ago with an interesting surpise at the end. (Yep, I'm still ripping CDs to the computer)

Image

1- "California Here I Come"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsKbz6ulOfQ

2- "Carolina in the Morning"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn59e0xAZAk

3- "I'm Just Wild About Harry"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwNIgFL-76Y

4- "My Old Kentucky Home"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RU2VvVsvNQ

5- "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" (Looks like Jolson beat Elvis to recording this song first. Even though Elvis probably sang it better, Joleson sang it pretty well too.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrdOoMobEdA

6- (Bonus track!) Here's Elvis's version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC89vv94r-A

p.s. I apologize for the blackface that Al Jolson's songs portray. They come from the original cd cover, and what the Internet sites where the music came from included with the songs.
