Well, it's the Cats vs. the Cards in the Final four. A month ago, I never thought Louisville would ever possibly be there. As I see it the Cardinals are a bunch of kids, who have overachieved to make it to New Orleans, and the Wild Cats are a much better team. It won't be long before we know which team from Kentucky will be playing for the National Championship.

.................................. Image

.............................. I wonder if the UK and U of L cheerleaders will sing "My Old Kentucky Home" together before the game begins.

p.s. Back in 1975 the Cats and Cards would have met for the National Basketball Championship, except for UCLA getting in the way, and U of L's Terry Howard missing his first free throw of the season on the front end of a one and one that would have iced the game for the Cards, to give UCLA the ball and the the win in the semi finals, with Richard Washington's last second shot in over time. This year will be the first time the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville have ever faced each other in the NCAA Final Four. This has to get Kentuckians' feathers and fur standing up in anticipation as to what is about to come...

p.p.s. Thank goodness the Wizard of Westwood, Bill Walton, "last second" Richard Washington. and undefeatable UCLA teams are things of the past... (I know you UCLA fans won't like my comment, but I think you know the glory days with John Wooden at the helm are long gone.)

p.p.p.s. The 1975 Final Four was John Wooden's last. He retired. However, not too many years later John Wooden escorted the U of L coach, Denny Crum, as Denny was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

Image

p.p.p.p.s. I think Denny Crum was one of the best coaches with X's and O's ever, but far from the best recruiter. Wade Houston was the man, who did the recruiting, and when Tennessee stole Wade and his son, Allen, away from Louisville, Denny Crum's days were numbered.

SCAR, as much as I love the Cards, and how they have overachieved to get to where they are, I think Kentucky is the better team. I'll be rooting for Louisville, but I think when the game is over, I will be rooting for the Cats in the NCAA Championship game. :D

You may well be right.

On the other hand, you always throw out the records, rankings and spread when instate rivals play. While Kentucky is the obvious favorite, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cards pull the upset.

Glorious day for the Bluegrass State.

Hope they show the fans of both teams singing My Old Kentucky Home.

The Cards dug themselves a hole, but miraculously climbed their way out of it to make it a game. With a little luck they might have pulled the upset off, but the Wildcats prevailed. I'm proud of how well Louisville did this year. They achieved much more than I thought they would. Losing to the #1 tournament seed in the Final Four is nothing to sneeze at.

From now on it's "Go Big Blue...!" for me.

The Kentucky Wildcats did it...!

Even though I was rooting for the U of L Cards, I kinda knew they couldn't win the NCAA basketball championship, and I thought the Cats could. The University of Kentucky did our state proud tonight. If you are from Lexington, Louisville, Bowling Green, or any place in Kentucky, you've got a year to swagger, and wear a T-shirt that says, "We're #1." We all are #1 in Kentucky thanks to to Wildcats, even if our favorite team didn't win.

Image

I might add that the University of Kentucky, with its win over Kansas tonight, set a new NCAA record for the most games won in a season.

p.s. Don't get too cockey, UK fans, I've got a feeling that a lot of those kids, who won the championship for us tonight, might be headed to the NBA before next season begins. :(

p.p.s. If those kids don't drop out of school and go to the NBA, I would suggest that you hold on to your "We're #1" T-shirts to save some money for next year. Just don't put on too much weight over the next twelve months, and those T-shirts should still fit you in March 2013 to wear again.

False. The Baylor women's juggernaut has already won 39 this year.

Memphis also won 38 in 07-08, however those wins have since been vacated.

I think we can ignore women's basketball on this. Why...? The answer is that most people would realise that this is not what I was talking about. I also think that "vacated" records are indeed vacated, and therefore are NOT records.

Please allow me to rephrase my post to not include YMCA basketball teams that have more wins in a season than the University of Kentucky has, women's teams that don't play against men's teams, as well as men's NCAA basketball teams, that have had their records "vacated" for cheating.

Bo, any way you look at it, what the University of Kentucky men's basketball team achieved this year is pretty damn good. It's something we can be proud of, even thought we are Kentucky transplants. This is a comment from a University of Louisville fan, who wanted the Cards to beat the Cats both times they faced each other this year.

p.s. I never went to any college in Kentucky, but I have lived in the Blue Grass State since 1974, and because it is very unlikely that my alma mater, Colgate University, will ever be a NCAA championship contender in basketball (or anything else), I am most thankful that the State of Kentucky has given me teams that I can root for that have a chance of winning something.

p.p.s Give me the old time "College Bowl" TV program again, and I think my alma mater would more than hold their own, if the NCAA would consider it a sport.

Check this out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Bowl

"One upset occurred in 1961, when the small liberal arts colleges of Hobart and William Smith in Geneva, New York, defeated Baylor University to retire undefeated as the third college, along with Rutgers and Colgate, to do so."

(My dad was a professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. May my father rest in peace. He died in 1979.)

Honestly, I think it's very important to bring up Memphis' vacated wins because John Calipari was their coach. I don't think it would surprise anybody if UK's 38 wins this year and their title are also vacated in the next five years. He has cheated everywhere he's coached.

Well since you said nothing about high school  , the Oak Hill Academy (Mouth Of Wilson, VA) boys basketball team finished the season 44-0 this year ;)

As a fan of UK I have to defen my coach. He has a letter from the NCAA clearing him of any wrong doing at both UMASS & Memphis. In the Derek Rose case the NCAA cleared Rose to play three times! What coach is going to bench his best player on iffy evidence when the NCAA cleared that play three times? The fact the Memphis' wins were vacated is wrong. They should have fought to keep them because they might have won on appeal. The championship and season will never be vacated ever. And we're going to add more! Haha

P.S. After spending most of the early 21 century lost in the wilderness of the college basketball landscape and not being a factor for a championship I have been thinking about how badly UCLA has become. They just aren't lost in the wilderness they are across an ocean lost on another continent lost in a desert. After the scandals they had this year and poor season I wonder if they will find a coach who will rescue the program and at least make them a contender in the PAC-10.

Iffy? Are you kidding me, Calipari is the biggest cheat in the history of College Basketball. Like BO stated, every program he has been at had to go on probation just after he left. Do you really think that it is a coincidence? Kentucky will join UMass and Memphis, it is only a matter of time. Do you really think he didn't know what was going on with Marcus Camby or Derrick Rose, really? Rose couldn't pass the test in his home town, but travels to Detroit where a high profile 'friend of the Memphis program' lives and just happens to pass the test easily. Also, severl of his teammates were caught in an SAT test scandal and grade tampering (and the dimmest of the bunch had to go to Detroit to pass?). Ohhhhhh, it just happens that the only one who didn't cheat was Derrick, yeah right..

That being said, Kentucky still won and Coach Cal did a fine job massaging those egos to get maximum benefit. In a few years we will see how much massaging was done..

Hey! I just had one Saturday.
"Which author wrote The Open Boat and The Monster?"
My Red Badge looked suspiciously similar to a Book Worm badge.
I got gipped...

Hell, that was a repeat question, and I missed it again. At first I hit Herman Melville, when he was eliminated, I switched to Jack London. When NTN threw the last clue up there, I suddenly remembered it was Stephen Crane. Old farts really don't ever get "repeat questions". We just vaguely remember the wrong answer we went with last time, and get it wrong again. :(

It looks like the University of Kentucky is going to have to find a new team. If I heard the news right, most of their NCAA championship basketball players are heading to the NBA, before the next season starts. It's a shame that they won't stay in college long enough to earn a degree, and go on to be engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, or even computer geeks.

p.s. I heard someone say the other night that coach, John Calipari, doesn't recruit, he re-loads.

My understanding is that UK's recruting class will bring in the #1, #3 and #4 rated freshmen to the Lexington campus. If things hold up as well as projected, they should have a decent team next year, although I suspect there will be other schools with strong SEASONED players that will give UK a run for their money.

Sports Illustrated's first projection of the 2012-13 rankings for 1-3 had Indiana, Louisville, and Kentucky in order.

Looks like a good year coming up for Kentuckiana hoopsters & fans.
