Thought it might be interesting to find out where all of you brilliant people honed your minds. (Or your livers...) I attended:

Millikin University (Decatur, IL)
B.M. Vocal Performance

That's right, I am a classically trained singer. Obviously why I got into the Nuclear Security industry...

Where did you go, and what was your discipline??

BA in Economics

I didn't pursue an MA or PhD that you would need to actually get a job as an Economist. Second year calculus was my stumbling block - my math skills are simply not up to snuff

On the other hand, it looks like you can photosynthesize, so you'll always be able to make a living. :D

The Florida State University

BS, Meteorology

Sadly, my professors chose to fill my head with "practical" stuff instead of trivia about Christian Doppler and Vilho Väisälä. So my education rarely pays off for BT-related matters. Except the Final Tragedy from January 31, 2006.

Not much of what I learned afterward was of tremendous practical use.

I dropped out of college.
I was too busy learning unimportant facts that don't allow me to provide meaningful contributions to society... :)

Gees, I was going to start a thread about us folk that don't have any book larnin', then I realized that I'm probably the only person on this forum that's never been to college.

That would be a pretty lonesome thread

I think I'm going to go communist!

Screw the proletariat!

(or maybe it's "Screw the intelligenti!)

Hell, I dunno, I'm EEOC, Screw Y'all! :D

Just Kidding guys, I really do admire all of you that persevered through the halls of academia - in my defense, it just wasn't my bag at the time.

You are not alone. I am a graduate of one of those commercial Data Processing schools that popped up in the late 60's and early 70's to fill the demand for computer programmers and systems analysts when businesses all computerized. The GI Bill paid for it. My Certificate, if I could find it, would be totally worthless nowadays if I were looking for DP job.

Fortunately, I had a great elementary and high school education which helps me with many trivia questions and my memory is not yet totally gone.

Wasn't my bag either, though I did manage to make it through. I'm not sure the value of sending 17/18 year olds to school the way we do, but who knows. It was at least worthwhile insofar as I got to meet a lot of people and shed myself of a few prejudices. As far as the "Book learning" part goes, while I had a few amazing professors to whom I'm forever indebted, most intelligent people, IMO, can learn as much on their own, if they have a little discipline.

It's mostly about the piece of paper, and even that isn't worth all that much anymore, except in a few fields.

Nice statement, but don't discount your education from the "Bad Apple Daycare"

What kind of singing did you most specialize in? I have an ex-girlfriend who focused in Operatic performance -- never realized just how bizarrely hard some of those programs were until seeing the vast amount of work they put her through. I remember in specific there was class called something like "Sight Reading II" or maybe just "Sight II" that was supposedly a particularly brutal one.

Yeah, that was my focus too... There were a lot of one credit courses. I do remember Sight Reading but I think it was part of another course, Music Theory I believe.

Were they looking for oil in the sky?

It was the physics part that got me that job. They considered the geo part easier to train than the physics part.
