I experienced my first earthquake this morning here in northern Illinois. There was a boom and then the house shook. I thought something had blown up. I ran outside to see what had exploded, but everything was OK. I did not know that minor earthquake made booming noises. My wife thinks I was dreaming, but I definitely heard a boom when the house shook. My wife says earthquakes do not go boom. We live ten miles or so from the epicenter in Sycamore, IL.

Frank - I experienced the same thing. I live in DeKalb. There was definitely a boom right before the shake. It was my first earthquake too. My wife thought I was an idiot for suggesting that it might have been a quake. That boom is what freaked us out. It sounded like something had hit the house!

The reason earthquakes go boom in the midwest is to punish you there for laughing at us Pacific Coasters every time you hear about earthquakes out here. Image Image Image

That was a first for me as well, Frank. I woke up very abruptly - - and I wandered around for quite a while, looking outside and all around the house trying to figure out what had happened. Once I found out what it was, I was glad I woke up; I would have been disappointed if I had missed it.

I heard 3.8 -- just rocking the cradle a little bit. I didn't hear/feel anything on the northwest side of the city.

TY for info.

Tell me, who is the brains up there in Chi-Town? Getting all the golds in Brain Buster?
Or is it a group achievement? I must head north this spring, would love to hang a few days.

Teasers has a really good Brainbusters group -- a lot more consistent than they are at Showdown. Very much a group thing but, IMO, MERKIN is the Big Brain (old Quiz Bowl veteran) but we have several people whose "wheelhouses" seem to fit the popular BB categories. Teasers gets a lot of visitors during the year, being convenient to O'Hare. Let us know if you're ever planning to be up this way.
