Here we will pay tribute to those in the celebrity world, major or minor, that have in some way affected our lives as a whole...

Jean Simmons, 80. Screen legend. http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b163670_singing-dancing-acting_triple_threat.html

Jean Simmons, the British born beauty who won an Emmy for The Thorn Birds and was nominated for two Oscars (The Happy Ending & Hamlet) has died of lung cancer at her Santa Monica home at the age of 80.

Post subject:  Howard Zinn

Howard Zinn, Historian, Author of A People's History of the United States, dead at age 87.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/28/us/28zinn.html

Started with an initial publication of 5000 and no press, but eventually surpassed the 1M mark in 2003. Of course, these numbers are dwarfed by what conservative authors put out today, but then they have a much larger marketing budget, and an arm of the press core & talk radio that actively promotes their own little version of the world. Howard Zinn had to depend on himself and his fellow leftists in the academy to promote A People's History, their little own version of the world.

When I began my post-secondary education back in those heady days of Blind Melon & Ace of Base, a little spat between Howard Zinn and some other historian fellow named Sidney Hook ended up as the 1st chapter in the outrageously expensive $14.95 textbook for the Intro to PoliSci class that I took at my third-rate college. It was delightful:

That was pretty tough stuff before the dawn of the internet.

But what passed for invective then is pretty cute & tame by our contemporary standards.

You know, I almost added that Gore Vidal better watch out for Tracy Jordan's car, but I thought that might be over the line.

That show really has its moments. I love how the plot is totally beside the point. The show is really a sequence of well-written and excellently delivered one-liners like the following:

Tracy Jordan, advising Young Kenneth wrote:
Ken, this is New York, the big easy! You got to live a little! Boundaries are made to be tested! That’s why the wife and I stopped using a safe word!!

I think I peed a little.

btw it's pretty tough to capture TJ's delivery in plain text.

On my way to Pittsburgh on Saturday nights, I drive past a mom & pop diner about 40 miles outside the city that's...let's just say very anti-Dem. It's had a sign displayed for many, many months that reads "SHUT UP, MURTHA!"

I'm curious to see if they showed even a tad of respect this week by taking it down or if they kept it posted (or changed it to something even worse).
