We're starting this year off as bad as the last one ended. Can we stop the loss of great memories?

Sure. Hymie was wacky.
But I prefer to think of his tour de force role as swinging chick magnet Mel Tarter
in an early episode of Kolchak.
It's possible my priorities are horribly, horribly wrong...

Cindy Stowell, 41.

I'm not a huge fan of Jeopardy!, a TV quiz show, but saw snippets of her six game winning streak, which began airing 12/13/2016. A slender brunette with a pixie haircut, she bore a superficial resemblance to Audrey Hepburn, but this comparison is unfair to both women. Stowell's most distinctive feature was her speaking voice, an ethereal soprano whisper. She was the quietest person I've ever seen on TV, and the in-house audience would hush to pin-drop silence to catch her requests and responses.

She won $105K and change over seven segments.

The segments in which she appeared were taped over two days, if memory serves 9/31 and 10/1/2016. She had qualified for the show a month or two earlier, and then e-mailed the show's executive producer, to report that she had, since prior contact, received a terminal diagnosis of colon cancer. She expected to live only another six months, and wished to have her appearance on the show expedited. She would donate her winnings, she added, to cancer research.

So I watched this strange, charming, and obviously well-informed young woman off and on for a week, and then more or less forgot about her.

She died on 12/05, eight days prior to her first appearance as a game show contestant. Just before Christmas, I found a blurb in the Minneapolis Star Tribune reporting her decease. Those of us who were watching witnessed a very successful run by what I could, newspaper in hand, only and inadequately describe to myself as a flesh and blood ghost. Then I started sobbing uncontrollably.

I'm not a big Dickens fan either, but there's this in A Christmas Carol: Ebenezer Scrooge had no trouble giving Marley the cold shoulder. It's those unexpected, unfamiliar ghosts that'll get to you.

Asia has been one of my favorites too since the 80s.
Asia was about to start a tour with Journey that Wetton had fully intended to participate in.
In Dec he said he was on the road to full recovery from colon cancer.

Now the fun begins as I decide whether to do the next line or not...Hmmmmm
I wish I could have picked a better movie to quote, but there are surprisingly few references to Asia in The Seventh Seal or The Godfather.

Anywho, back to our regularly scheduled programming of famous dead people.
