Thomas Hoobler passed away last month after having a stroke. I will let the New York Times tell you about
his non-trivia life: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/22/books/thomas-hoobler-dies.html.

Per trivia, he began playing after being recruited by a Nickelodeinn player shortly after winning $500,000 on "Who Wants
To Be A Millionaire." He played there briefly until the place closed, then played at A&M Roadhouse, Mad River, the remote NJ COVID-era
locations, and Bull's Eye.

A few days before his death, he did this:

His wife, Dorothy, continues to soldier on with us. May he rest in peace.

Oh wow, that is terrible news. Quite surprising. Condolences to Dorothy and everyone else in NY.

He was definitely among the original Showdown players at Nickelodeon back in the days of fierce SD competition against W. Covina, Washington DC and Houston. I think he was on the original Badbart yahoo group and was on the BT forums. Then on here a good bit. Seemed like a regular, little bit gruff, New Yorker of course.

Then, I did meet him one time on a zoom call while sitting in with the NY team for a Covid remote game. Nice guy sitting in his apartment with his wife Dorothy. Very welcoming to a new comer. Such a loss to everyone.

To get the chronology straight, he won $500.000 on the June 5,2001 show of Millionaire and started playing at Nickelodeinn a few months thereafter. To be considered a member of the "original" Nickelodeinn team, you would have been playing there during its heyday from around 1995 to the latter part of 1998, when the West Covina computers took over and "original players" began leaving.
After that, the team never did as well as before. Some original players remained, and a few continued playing after Nickelodeinn closed in 2002 and the team eventually ended up at A&M Roadhouse where it revived with new blood.

Yes, that was a Hybrid game at Herrill Lanes, I recall it well.

Thanks for the kind words and I'll relay them to Dorothy tonight.

Condolences to XTRAIN's family and friends at Bull's Eye. He was seen on the boards often and for many years.

Hate hearing that STRO, remember meeting him when I was there in 2001. Just happened to be looking at our pics from that visit recently. We might not have gotten along here but I respected his brilliant mind.
