New Scaratings

Jim/COOGS and I have signed up to go back to Vegas August 8-11 to participate in Trivia Nationals, which has replaced TCONA in that time slot. Last year Jim played on a MERKIN's Quiz Bowl team, which had a slot available when the planned member didn't show (the team won its first round, and was winning against Roger Craig of "Jeopardy!" fame's team until they bounced back in the second half of the game. Now that we know one has to sign up well in advance, I was wondering if anyone wanted to fill the two slots available if we sign up our own team, or has slots available on their own team (BTW we'd like to play together but don't have to).

I could be interested in joining you. I went to the first four TCONA's, 2011-2014, but I haven't been since. Played in the quiz bowl event each of those times, randomly assigned to a team each time. 2013 was particularly memorable. We had a standout player who dominated through the first six games we played and we reached the championship final on stage. Although I contributed a little bit as well, enough so that he remembered me these six years later when I still had his number left over from having to communicate the scheduling of the elimination rounds. His name was Jamey Holzhauer.

We can't pretend we're as good as James Holzhauer, but we'll do our best--love to have you join us, WHALES--CONDOR has also expressed an interest, so we have our four people. BTW we always play under the name "Griff's Trivia Army," in recognition of the place where we first started playing pub trivia as opposed to Buzztime. Griff's is a long-time Irish pub in Houston (it actually claims to be Houston's first sports bar), and many years ago Vern Smith started a Thursday night live game, and coined the phrase "Griff's Trivia Army," complete with T-shirts with a drawing of Vern as a leprechaun (I'm sure one of us will be wearing it at Trivia Nationals). Sadly Vern left us abruptly a few years ago due to a stroke, but the teams that play there have kept Thursday night trivia alive, so it's somewhere I now host as well as play.
