About to pull out of my driveway, I had forgotten which way to turn. Whatever errand momentarily eluding me, I drove down to B-52 to play a couple Lunchtimes against the Golden Horde, who (almost) always meet at one or another site on Tuesdays and Fridays for the purpose of racking up Gold Medals. Carbone's in Lakeville, Drkula's in Inver Grove, Fab Ferns in St Paul are among their favorite haunts. They get around, but they're all registered to the BWW-Mall of America, highly ranked on Buzztime's Top Sites page. Personally? With Medals and Badges, I can take 'em or leave 'em. Much to my surprise, the Horde was ensconced at B-52. Outnumbered six to one, I had no choice but to be taken prisoner. They were having a good session, I was assured. And when most of them ran the next quiz, there was talk about a new record. They had never recorded more than 39 Golds in any session, and they were in the high 30's with three games to play. I stepped outside to light a cigarette and remembered why I had gone out in the first place: my disposable lighter had run dry. But the Horde hadn't run dry: most of them ran the last three Lunchtimes. WANYE posts the tally the mornings following these sessions. I'm just informed that the Horde racked up 55 golds, not counting OGEDEI's perfect Countdown following Lunchtime. This places these twice-a-week players above 1000 Golds, #6 in the country. They collected more Golds yesterday than all but six Minnesota sites, and 188 nationally, have collected in the past six months. They were so euphoric that they released their hostage, your correspondent, without demanding ransom. Apparently a few contributive answers go a long way with those half-civilized folk. |
