Any team that allows a member to wager anything other than 50% should be disbanded. :o

The customary way to play at Sinclair's is possibly unique. We play as a team until the final question, and that one we play as individuals. This is because the site hands out a $20 gift certificate/tab credit for first place, $15 for second, and $10 for third. What we do is a compromise between those who prefer to play as a team, and those for whom winning is most important. Needless to say, it plays hell on our team average, but it's a system most of the players seem to prefer.

That said, there is strong social pressure to bet 50% on the final. It was the fifteen-year-olds first time playing and she made a moce that, in hindsight, was the correct strategic decision for this game.

When it comes to team play, you can't be a little bit pregnant.
This system seems conducive to sandbagging before the final question.
I also couldn't imagine this set-up not predominantly falling in favor of the strongest player.
But, hey, if it ain't broke, I guess...

I would normally agree, but our team wasn't doing well at all AND she was also in last place before the Final Agony, er, Tragedy.

You've hit on nearly all the problems with it. It is also conducive to accusations of sandbagging when a player just gets it right on a random guess, but didn't say anything. But on the whole it works. Yes, the strongest player dominates, but basing so much on one random question has led to everyone (including a ten-year-old and a fifteen-year-old) winning at least once.

This was posted on another thread, but I think it ought to be posted here where BT is perhaps more likely to see it:

In the 26 July Showdown Category Round:

The City of London has exactly **32** boroughs.
[I didn't look this up to confirm, but I'm pretty sure the words "City of" should have been omitted. The City of London is, I believe, one of the 32 boroughs, along with Westminster, Islington, Kensington, and others, that comprise Greater London.]

Our resident Brit, ELROND, called shenanigans on this. He said that 32 may be the total for Greater London or the London Metropolitan Area, but it is not true for the question as it is worded.

In the years round in Spotlight last night, the first clue was Grammy Awards Winner: Higher Love. Buzztime's answer was 1985.

Higher Love was released as a single in 1986 and won record of the year at the 1987 Grammy Awards.

The next three clues did all point to the year 1985, but by putting an incorrect clue in the first spot, it prevented getting the max 1000 points on that question.

Playing Six on Thursday, January 31, 2019. During the matching round, science category, we were asked to match the element to its atomic number. One of the elements listed was "zircon" (not an element). Since I knew the other three, I was able to match zircon to number 30, and realize that what they really intended to say was zinc.

We never Google, but if you do, you will see that BOTH Veronese and Tintoretto have a painting titled "Wedding at Cana" so which do you choose? Too bad it was the final question in Showdown.

The Veronese work is titled "The Wedding at Cana". The Tintoretto work is "Marriage at Cana" and that's what the clue asked for.

41. It is a famous 1561 painting by Tintoretto:_______________________________.
[Choices: The Birth of Venus, The School of Athens, Assumption of the Virgin, The Night Watch, Marriage at Cana ]

And even if the titles were the same, the question and answer is still accurate as written. You can't always rule out an answer that might not be unique.

Wedding and Marriage came into the English language via old Norse and old French. Both wedding and marriage are covered, elegantly, by a single term in Italian: Nozze, an identification in the native tongue of both Veronese and Tintoretto, whose competing versions of Le Nozze di Cana are both admirable.

Tom D apologized about this on the Facebook BadBart page:

"Sorry about that. When I reviewed the question I just saw “ocean” and missed the Atlantic part. My apologies."

It’s Tom D’s doing? Ha! I’m gonna have to rib him without mercy after all the sports digs over the years.

Thanks for the cross post as I’ve never been on FB.

Last week, in Showdown I believe, there was a question about Kristi Noem where the “right answer” was she is governor of North Dakota.

Yeah ok, and I suppose the Buzzies think the Racoon National Cemetery is in South Dakota?

The last question of the Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023 6:30 Sports Trivia Game was something to the effect of "Which of these is NOT true of Don Shula?". The Buzztime answer was "He won 80% of his games". This is a correct answer. However, we went with "He won 3 Super Bowls", which is also a correct answer. Shula only won 2 Super Bowls, 1973 and 1974, with the Miami Dolphins.

Thursday 12/21/23 Topix the question was "Where is the National Christmas Tree located?" Two of the five choices were "The White House" and "The National Mall". I've seen this question enough to know BT thinks the WH is correct, but as a long time DC area resident I can attest that the tree is not on WH grounds -- it's on the Ellipse which is a grassy area between the WH and the Washington Monument. It is outside the WH grounds and IMHO part of the Mall.

Hey Lumpy,

Merry Christmas…….and now for a lump of coal in your FL stocking.

The National Christmas Tree is indeed part of the White House and Presidents Park. “The Mall” is a different Park Service unit. Here’s the National Park service website.

https://www.nps.gov/whho/planyourvisit/ ... s-tree.htm

I had no doubt that the correct answer was the White House.

Hope you are enjoying that 70 degree weather.
