In 1979 I joined a group called the SCA, Society for Creative Anachronism. I initially adopted thew name and persona of Father Christopher, a converted Viking. I needed a longer name when I registered so I became Christopher Sigismund Olafsson, the last Viking convert to christianity (c 1210). I converted because I was getting older and tithes and indulgences were less work than loot and pillage. When I started playing computer games I was always Sigismund, my evil, unconverted Norse alter ego. When I first logged in to play trivia, in 1996 I believe, I discovered I could only use a maximum of 6 letters for my handle and sigism seemed lame so I used the palindromic sigis. Friends of mine have formed an SCA household and are calling themselves the House of Sigis so it has come full circle.
