Today, I went with my father to Spring Grove Cemetery, one of the largest in the Greater Cincinnati Area as the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall is in Cincinnati this weekend. Something that really bothered me was that lack of knowledge that younger people have today in regards to what Memorial Day is for.
Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is to remember those who gave their lives serving their country, giving us the freedoms we have today. Veteran's Day (November 11) is a day to celebrate military service by living veterans.
My father was a member of the Army and served in Vietnam in the late 1960's. Several of his buddies were killed in action. I went to help him look at the wall for his friends' names and it made me think soon we are going to be losing another war generation. The men and women who served in WWII are in their 80s and 90s. Those who served in Korea are in their 70s and 80s and are starting to pass.
For those of us who have lost loved ones in military service, thank you for your families sacrifice. I hope you all have a good day tomorrow.
While I don't have anything but "thanks" to say for what you wrote, as my father served 27 years in the Amry/Air Force, I would also like to remember those who have passed on but did not serve. I have friends and family who did not serve (be it gender, age or other reasons) but have passed on, and I took some time to remember them too.
