I'm up in DC for a visit and have learned that the Grand Slam has dropped NTN. Apparently, with the team playing a lot less often (and having shrunk in size anyway in recent years) and the boxes not getting much use aside from Tuesdays, the management decided it wasn't worth the expense. So the bar that has seen several McCarthy Cup wins, a Sandbagger Trophy triumph, and numerous wins in NTN-sponsored competitions is off the grid.

Not 100% sure where the team will reassemble for the next tournament, but it most likely will be the BWW in Arlington. A few of us played there last night, and they took good care of us and have a good set up for trivia, plus the location is convenient for most of the team.

Never a good thing to lose a site, much less an accomplished site! Good luck in your new place!!

Truly the end of an era, and I'm sad to see it go even though the team had not been playing much recently. Grand Slam set the standard for Showdown excellence this century.

Will TTLPKG retrieve all the plaques? I have learned from personal experience that once a location drops NTN, any plaques won there have been known to go missing (or even get thrown away).

Very sorry to hear. However, the Slammers are all getting older. It's time for them to retire to Florida, anyway. Tampa's a nice place.

Nobody ever retires to Ohio. Sorry. Tough titty. And when your team gets old, we'll welcome them too.

Not true. I know one young fella, nearing retirement age, that ventured up to the Dayton/Cincinnati area scouting out retirement options. Believe he was from the Tampa area, a trivia player, and a one mean S.O.B!

Yes, I know that fella, and you're kind to call him "young." The s.o.b. reports having a wonderful time at Bargo's but you're mistaken if you thought he was scouting retirement locations. He was trying to recruit your best players to the Sunshine State!

Wow that's too bad. I knew that play was down there, but didn't think it was that bad. It's all Sid's fault.

Opiee and I went there from time to time and we know several people that go there regularly to play a few games before/after Caps games at the Verizon center and Nationals games too.

It was so easy to stop by the Slam being on a Metro line.
It was overpriced but will be missed.

Fast Eddies on K St is now the place to go in DC, also near a Metro stop...but be warned about Fri & Sat nights after 8pm.

That's a shame. I have a friend who makes frequent business trips to Washington and has played there. Now he will have to find somewhere else.

Of course, its a much bigger issue for whatever regular players they had. :(

Several of the regulars, excluding Tues, had moved over to Fast Eddies on K St a few years ago.

So basically it was one daytime guy named Brian and the Tues guys, that have cut way back. Along with a few random visitors a week. In the spring and summer there was fair numbers of tourists coming through.

Hopefully PKG will get the plaques and Ken Jennings stuff.

I wanted to play there on a Saturday night after a Caps game a few years ago and the system had been shut off and nobody knew how to turn it back on. Needless to say, I never went back.

Well, I'm glad I added The Slam to my meager list of visited sites back in July

I'm sure I'm not a jinx, though. I visited Fletcher's in 2008, and it's still going strong
