Well, 2 counties in NKY recently approved a quasi-smoking ban (Kenton and Campbell - these include Covington and Newport ). The ban pretty much says that if you allow <18 year olds into your establishment then you cannot allow smoking. This hurts places like BWWs and TGIF and such but many bars (including Dickmanns ) do not allow minors in so they should be able to avoid the 15-20% projected loss in business. One sticky point is the reuqirement that all establishments have a non-smoking area available - this hurts straight-up cluibs/bars that tend to be open areas with little or no ability to establish a true non-smoking area. A friend of mine who owns such an establishment intends to place his non-smoking area outside.... I love the irony....

Boone county, where I live (Florence, Uniion, Burlington) have not yet passed any ban but are expected to adopt whatever the other two eventually decide on. Currently they intend to revisit the ban-plan and it may end up weakened even more with establishments having the option to post signs indicating that smoking is allowed and that it is up to the patron whether or not they wish to enter. It is believed that Campbell cty will adopt this plan and thus Kenton will closely follow, at which time, Boone will likely jump on the bandwagon without having to put any effort and time into developing the actual plan.

Local studies showed that when Ohioh instituted their state-wide ban, downtown Cincy bars/restaurants lost approximately 15-20% of their business, most of which has not returned, and a reflective bump occured in the NKY counties.

Me too, because you know he is always right and never wrong. We will then get the whole spiel that the losing business because of the ban is a lie, blah blah blah and some "independent" research company's study proves him correct....

I remember when I lived in Florence and Ohio installed its ban, the Cincinnati tv stations did a story about how many license plates from Ohio could be found in the parking lots in Boone/Kenton/Campbell counties. Basically people went over the border to eat out, and buy cheaper ciggys on the way back to cincy

I hope he doesn't see it. We all know FOOBAR doesn't like controversy and I'd hate to see him dragged into an unpleasant exchange.

There is a proposal in the Illinois legislature to allow smoking again in Illinois Casinos. The intent is to recover the money that was lost to neighboring states when the smoking ban went into effect. Chicago does border Indiana. It makes no difference to me, since I seldom gamble and quit smoking last March.

Not exactly a resounding endorsement.
I have to admit that I haven't been too terribly impressed with the 21st century so far...

Me neither, come to think of it. But as far as finding bars and restaurants where people don't smoke, this is definitely the better century. Even in the '90s, at least in Connecticut, whenever I entered a restaurant, the first question asked would be, "Smoking or non?" I would pick "non" and would be breathing cigarette fumes anyway.

The most ridiculous place that I knew of with their "non-smoking section" was a Hooters. They put their "non-smoking section" sign on a wall above a single table. And that table had an ashtray on it. (A dirty one at that.)

Upon reading foobar's initial post again, the quasi-ban in these two Kentucky counties is an improvement over Connecticut law of 10+ years ago, only in that establishments that allow minors can't allow smoking. A statewide law that applies to all public places would be far better though.

yeah - there as such a huge demand for smoke-free bars that all of those national chains popped up to profit from it.... oh wait no they didn't in fact... because most bar patrons (yes most) smoke and non-smokers are notoriously clueless when it comes to bar etiquette such as not sitting all night sipping free soda while playing trvia and the entire mind-boggling idea that one should tip for your bartender's time/service not necessarily your tab total.... anyway, turns out that bars that do not allow under-18 or employ under-18 need only post a sign at the door saying basically "we smoke here - screw you" and they are good to go. Places like BWWs and such are hurt by it but nobody else. I'm drinking a rum coke and smoking a marlboro light 100 in the comfort of AC while listening to Mumford and Sons on the juke box and watching ESPN highlights as I type this. Ah yes non-smoking activists.... second only to creationists....

Frankly, from personal experience, most smokers have no concept of "etiquette" whatsoever!

The smoking bans in Canada started out this way, too, with half-assed measures and little enforcement, and claims by smoking bar owners of lost business. I have seen places with non-smoking sections like the Hooters one mentioned above. What gradually happened was that the number of non-smokers coming out increased, hoping to be able to find a place where they could breathe and enjoy the music, a drink, or food. The smokers, whose numbers were already declining, got more complaints, and it began to dawn on them that maybe it wasn't polite to kill other people with their carcinogenic waste products in non-smoking areas, and either cut back, went outside, or at least asked the others they were with if they minded the smoke. Of course, at the beginning there were mainly smokers in the bars - no one else could enjoy them because of the fumes, even with good ventilation. Gradually the demand for non-smoking areas increased, and fewer smokers were healthy enough to get out anyway, so when the province-wide bans came in the enforcement was good (more by patron pressure than by government) and the transition was quite painless for most. There has been a decline in some alcohol sales recently, but that has been attributed mainly to the tougher laws against drinking and driving.

I sure wish it were true that smoking bans cut down on business, since the local trivia bar is so damned packed in spite of the ban. I'm sick of waiting 20 minutes, a half hour, or more to get a seat in these no-smoking places.

Heck, all the local bars, trivia or no, remain packed.

So it goes.

Let me know when they ban my electronic cigarette, like the morons around here are trying to do.

Well my home trivia bar has never fully recovered from the Illinois Smoking ban. Most of the smokers went to establishments that had beer gardens or patios where you could smoke and many just stayed home. Unfortunately non smokers did not flock to the place. The smoking ban killed our Trivia team. I am talking about just an average neighborhood ma and pop bar.

Boy, I sure wish that had happened here. Oh, sure, all the restaurant owners claimed it would, and there are all these horror stories you hear, but no place I've ever lived that imposed one ever experienced this... it's ALWAYS someplace else...
