Was actually reading about this on space.com this morning (slow day at work)

http://www.space.com/26740-rosetta-spac ... rival.html

It's the name of a probe-lander that will separate from the probe Rosetta, attach itself to a comet, and get samples. My question is (I can't find the answer), will Philae remain attached to the comet during the comet's round-trip? I saw where it comes to our galaxy every 6.5 years. It would be cool if Philae could remain attached, hitch a ride on the comet to the galaxy on the other end of the comet's orbit, and be the first earth object to make it out of our solar system and back again. Imagine what information it could collect on a distant galaxy.

Toto, I don't think ICEMAN's "in Kansas" anymore

I say MiniYoda's got it, since he gave the explicit answer, but he and frozen-water-dude can fight over control of the thread

I will mention no comet, especially 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, is known to be an interstellar object, much less an intergalactic one. 67P only gets a little farther out than Jupiter, or 1/28-billionth of the way to the (relatively) nearby Andromeda galaxy. Voyager 1, which took 35 years to reach the edge of the Sun's influence, would need around 45 billion years to travel that far, never mind finding a way to make a u-turn and come back!
Image
Philae is designed to harpoon itself to the comet's surface, and draw a sample from up to 20 cm deep. Rosetta will maintain a tight orbit and relay data as 67P swings through its next perihelion. There are no plans to retrieve either probe once the mission ends in late 2015

Iceman, if you have a good trivia question, feel free to post it. It might be a while before I can come up with one.

In what two U.S. states would you find the Caprock Escarpment?

I was waiting for someone else to answer but it doesn't look like that is happening. My brother used to live in Amarillo which is right on top of the escarpment (its okay, he has moved & is much better now  ) so the answer would be Texas & New Mexico.

ICEMAN has the floor.

I grew up in southeast New Mexico in a little town called Lovington also on the Caprock, or as I refer to it "The Arm Pit of New Mexico"

I don't think that narrows it down much. 8-)

I think we all know the name of the B-29 that dropped the A-bomb on Hiroshima & the name of the B-29 that dropped the other A-bomb on Nagasaki...

What was the name given to the only B-29 that flew on both missions?

Enola Gay?

Nope.

This B-29's name purportedly referred to the talents of the bombardier/navigator who could supposedly "hit a pickle barrel with a bomb from 30,000 feet".

This is the only clue I will give. Feel free to Google.

(of course BO knows this)

Thank you. I did; specifically I googled "hit a pickle barrel with a bomb from 30,000 feet".

Second guess is Bockscar.

Strike two.
It was not the Enola Gay or Bockscar. It was a separate B-29 that served the purpose of an observation craft (okay, I guess that was another clue).

The Great Artiste which was to drop "Fatman" on 11 Aug. Change of date didn't allow for instrument changes so was used in support role again.

A good question. Most would consider a U.S. ship, but it was the British cruiser HMS Exeter.

Actually there four ships sunk on that day. First was USS Houston shortly after midnight, which was in news last week with wreck location being confirmed. Second was HMS Exeter later that morning during Second Battle of the Java Sea along with her escort destroyers HMS Encounter and USS Pope.

You have the floor.
