BTW, PP, I forgot to tell you in my earlier post that there are about a bajillion little snippets like this (hopefully more accurate than some of my Super Trivia stuff... :D) just floating around my noggin waiting to find a home. :D

Do you recognize the name Vivienne Nearing without looking it up?
Here's another fun one:
Who won the 1946 Gold Cup in hydroplane racing?
How about:
Who was the 1958 Hong Kong cha-cha champion? Obvious, but wacky nonetheless.
Lastly:
Besides being heavyweight champions, what other unique feature do Robert Fitzsimmons and Jack Johnson both share? (There might be a multitude of correct answers to this one, i.e. being right-handed and such. But that ain't what I'm a-lookin' fer... ;) )

Ah. Actually, I've heard of Vivienne Nearing, but I can't remember why. Maybe I should read some old trivia books. I used to read Ripley when I was a kid -- I still remember the occasional snippet.

I don't know what similarity connects Fitzsimmons and Johnson, but there are a lot of differences.

Time for a new question:

By which name was Christopher Columbus never addressed as during his lifetime:

1. Christoffa Corombo
2. Christopher Columbus
3. Christophorus Colonus
4. Xpoual de Colon
5. Christovam Colom

I'm fairly sure he was never known as (2). At birth in Genova, he was called Cristoforo Colombo. When he moved to Spain, he adopted Colon as his last name, and may have been known as Cristobal, which looks a bit like (4). I'd guess that Colom (5) is a Portuguese equivalent of Colon. (1) looks suspicious, though.

PP is correct. # 2 is the correct answer. number 1 and Cristoforo Colombo are actually the same name. There are variations in spelling between Italian and the #1 which is in the local Genoese dialact of the time.

Colom is the Portuguese version of Colon. # 4 is the name that appears in his agreement with the King and Queen of Spain before his first voyage across the Atlantic.

his family preferred 3 as the correct spelling. that didn't work out too well

Vivienne Nearing is the lady that "beat" Charles Van Doren, ending his run on Twenty One.
ICEMAN was correct with his call about that ever-famous hydroplane racer Guy Lombardo.
Bruce Lee was a trained dancer and won the Hong Kong Cha-cha Championship of 1958.
Fitzsimmons and Johnson are both buried in the same cemetery about 200 feet apart. I don't know if it's true that they were buried in opposite corners...

Interesting. I have some strange knowledge too. Thomas Wolfe and O. Henry (William Sydney Porter) are also buried in the same cemetery, in Asheville, NC, a few hundred yards from the house I was raised in. Which I suppose raises another question. It has always been my understanding that only veterans are entitled to be buried in Arlington National, so who made an exception for Bobby and Teddy? Seriously, who has the ultimate authority over Arlington National? Note: I am not carping -- de mortuis etc. etc.

I believe Congress can make exceptions for family members of Veterans or members of State.

Here's the actual question:

41. COMPOSERS
This composer of "William Tell" was the son of a trumpeter & a singer

It's a good thing that I was a diligent fan of the Lone Ranger.

Well...I'm still waiting for the answer.
My guess is AJ.

Nope. Think family.

Brian Forster?

Heh...heh...
you're going to need a map to work your way around that reference... :D

That clue smells suspiciously of the Unsers.
Al Sr., perhaps.

Yikes! Wasn't that the kid that morphed into the second incarnation of the kid drummer on the Partridge Family? (strange I should remember that but not the character's name)

And yep, it was Big Al. He did it in 1978. I was at the Ontario race.

Rossini was the composer. Now he's in a grave somewhere, decomposing.

wikipedia:

Bobby
In October 1943, six weeks before his eighteenth birthday, Kennedy enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve as an apprentice seaman, released from active duty until March 1944 when he left Milton Academy early to report to the V-12 Navy College Training Program at Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His V-12 training was at Harvard (March–November 1944), Bates College in Lewiston, Maine (November 1944–June 1945), and Harvard (June 1945–January 1946). On December 15, 1945, the U.S. Navy commissioned the destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. and shortly thereafter granted Kennedy's request to be released from naval-officer training to serve starting on February 1, 1946, as an apprentice seaman on the ship's shakedown cruise in the Caribbean. On May 30, 1946, he received his honorable discharge from the Navy.

'Teddy'
Kennedy enlisted in the United States Army in June 1951.[8] Following basic training at Fort Dix, he requested assignment to Fort Holabird for Army Intelligence training, but was dropped after a few weeks without explanation.[8] He went to Camp Gordon for training in the Military Police Corps.[8] In June 1952, he was assigned to the honor guard at SHAPE headquarters in Paris.[1][8] His father's political connections ensured he was not deployed to the ongoing Korean War.[1][9] While stationed in Europe he travelled extensively on weekends and climbed the Matterhorn.[10] He was discharged in March 1953 as a private first class.[8][10]

Maybe I'm missing something.

I'm sure he's completely de-keyed by now. Sorry; that's really not even a good pun. Forget I wrote it. Carrion.

Well, I've been told that, if you visit Rossini's grave, you'll hear the sounds of "The William Tell Overture" being played backwards.
