Actually, there are two rules:

1) Don't forget to bring a knife
2) Don't forget to follow rule #1

Somehow, I knew even a rather difficult one like this would be child's play for SPOTES.

Do you want to take it, AKBAR?

I was hesitant, simply because when it comes to trivia, I am better at answering questions or editing them than I am at coming up with them, especially when an effort should be made to avoid easily googleable answers. But here we go...

The impressively bearded dude is Joseph Swan, who should be far more famous because it was he who invented the incandescent light bulb, not Edison.

New question:

What were the only two countries in Africa that were independent from Eurpean rule on the eve of World War I?

Ethiopia and Liberia.

One is Liberia.
Is Ethiopia the other?
The Italians controlled area near it, but I'm not sure if it was part of Ethiopia or not.

Since zog seems to be a little shy...
I assume you're waiting for confirmation?

Here's one for everyone while we wait:

What is the unique, not to mention incredibly obscure, common bond of hip hop artist Chris Brown, author J.K. Rowling, Sir Isaac Newton and actor Mickey Rourke?

Let the search begin!

There was a movie with that title a few years ago.

I guess I can't really say "no", not being familiar with all of their fears and picadillos, but I can say that it's not what I'm looking for.

Sorry about that... :) Now that I'm on the spot, I'm trying to think of a good question...

Which state's name is derived from a native word for "canoe"?

While these folks may, indeed, be clinically depressed (obviously, nothing's more depressing than earning more than half a billion dollars writing kids' books... :( Image), that is, alas, also not the desired answer.
I'll give it through Friday and post the answer then, if needed.

Until then, here are some numbers that could lead to a clue for the correct answer:
06h 45m 08.9173s
−16° 42′ 58.017

spotes sent a PM with the correct answer, which is Missouri. According to the Wikipedia article on that state,

Quote:
The state is named for the Missouri River, which was named after the Siouan-language tribe. They were called the ouemessourita..., meaning "those who have dugout canoes", by the Miami-Illinois language speakers. The Illini were the first natives encountered by Europeans in the region and they adopted the name of the Missouri from them.

Hey! While you were visiting 86th Street Pub, didn't you mention how Chris Brown would stop by your crib and you guys would kick it old school...? Represent, Noles!

Siriously, this ts a gem of a question, but too hard for me, unless you're suggesting that they are all both stars and dogs. That might apply to Brown and Rourke, but surely not to Newton!

Ding!Ding!Ding!

Falcon is correctomundo.
All of these folks have dogs named after gems.
Rowling's is named Sapphire.
Rourke's is named Ruby Baby.
Newton and Brown have dogs named Diamond.

The Sirius clue only helps if you consider it by its mild-mannered secret identity - the Dog Star. :D

You're up, Falcon. Your coyness doesn't get you out of providing trivial entertainment for the kids.

Darn, perhaps I should be giving thanks, but I had hoped that a few more clues would cause someone else to reply and have to think of the next question. I'm no good at thinking of imaginative and difficult ones like Spotes, but maybe I can get you thinking a little about Canada. This should be easy for Pengwn, but harder for most on this list, so i'll make it a two-part one to give all a chance.

a) What Canadian Prime Minister suffered a fatal heart attack at a dinner with the British monarch at Windsor Castle?
b) Besides being leader of a country and dying in office, what did this person have in common with John F. Kennedy?

I believe the answer to that would be Sir John Thompson, who died in 1894. He was the first Roman Catholic to serve as Prime Minister.

Wow, that was fast, and correct on both parts (except that Kennedy wasn't PM). Your question next.

Okay, they were the first leaders of their respective countries to have been Roman Catholic. :)

What (besides the obvious fact that these people were composers) do Ludwig van Beethoven, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Claudio Monteverdi have in common?

Nothing?

Twelve hours have gone by since I posted my question. Unless MiniYoda has any objections, if nobody can post the correct answer in the next 12 hours, I'll put up an easier question, but will give another 24 hours before answering the current one for the benefit of any die-hards.

I predict that if anyone does answer this, it will be pengwn. Time will tell.
