OK, sticking with history. I what war was the battle for Island Number 10 fought?

As a bonus - how did the island get its name?

I believe this was one of U. S. Grant's early victories in the Civil War. Can't remember logic of the name.

Grant did set up the assault with his victories at Ft.s Donelson and Henry, but Pope was the one who actually led the Union forces at Island #10 (which seem to remember being told was the tenth island south of the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers).

It was during the U.S. Civil War, so Death Dealer, you had the correct answer to the question. But it also was Pope, not Grant, who won the battle. And the island was named because it was the tenth island on the Mississippi south of the junction with the Ohio River (near New Madrid, Mo. - which happened to be near the epicenter of a series of major earthquakes in 1811-1812).

So, Death Dealer, you got the actual question right. Your turn!

One of my HS friends had a younger brother that tried to climb Weaver's Needle. He went with someone that had climbing experience but he had none. He did not make it back.

Meanwhile, the 1950 team from India withdrew from the World Cup. What was the reason?

I believe it had something to do with them not being allowed to play barefoot, which would likely have been against FIFA regulations.

My apologies for the delay...

Dogana is the largest city or town in which country?

After 24 hours, you can look up the answer. The time limit on this question is 48 hours.

I believe it's gotta be a country one never hears too much about. Sao Tomé and Principe?

Well, you're partially right. (It is a country one seldom hears about.) But it's not São Tomé.

I went and looked it up, because the name felt familiar, but I just couldn't place it (and everybody else seems to have fallen asleep, anyway)
San Marino!

In 2004, some foul play enabled Jamie Burnett to rack up a first-turn score of 148, the highest yet recorded in a professional match of what game?

Sorry, you're ice-cold (har!) with that guess :D
The maximum is 8, and at least one first-end eight-ender has been accomplished: http://www.curldc.org/eight-enders/, third item, in 2006

Also no

In Test cricket, the record for runs is also the record for first-innings runs, Brian Lara's 400, set April 10-12, 2004 (he also holds the First-class record of 501). If you restrict "first-turn" to mean either of the first two batters who take the field to open a match, then the mark is the prior runs record, Matthew Hayden's 380 from October 9-10, 2003

Perhaps a hint to jump-start this thread into some semblance of life

Like cricket, it is a genteel British game

While growing up in Europe, I played a game called Rounders, similar to baseball

Sorry, ICEMAN, the game's name sounds nothing like "Oompa-Loompa Woman" :D

TIEFLY's potted the correct answer! (okay, with an assist from ICEMAN)

Ordinarily, a maximum break in snooker is 147 points. However, if a player fouls and leaves a snookered table position for his/her opponent (no clear shot to any red balls), then that player is awarded a free ball, and may play any of the colour balls as if it was red (if sunk, that ball is brought back up, the player continues with his colour shot, etc.). If this occurs when all 15 red balls remain on the table, the free ball creates a 16th red, thus the maximum possible turn score in snooker is 155

This situation occurred during qualifying for the 2004 UK Championship, when Leo Fernandez fouled on his first turn of the 14th frame. Jamie Burnett nominated the brown as his free red, sunk the brown again as his colour, then ran the table, taking 12 blacks, 2 pinks and a blue after the 15 normal reds

The following year, Jamie Cope achieved the first ratified 155 break, but during a practice frame. I guess that would be akin to kicking a 70-yard field goal in a preseason game
