I love Coast to Coast. Especially when they get on the topic of demons. That's when the real crazies come out to call in.

In a word: practice. (And lots of it.)

Also, both of these games could be played for a long time by using patterns; for someone who can score in the millions at these games, these patterns must be second nature. :)

Got a question... When do these guys, who play these games for hours, find time to go the bathroom...?

The abducted people are even better... Yep, there are insane people, who call in to "Coast to Coast", and tell about being abducted by aliens. How in the world can the host of the show listen to these zanies, and not burst out laughing at them...?

Oh my gosh, I just heard the throbbing sound of another flying saucer landing in my back yard. Damn, they're back again to try to get me. Gotta hide under my bed for a while, until they give up and go away...

Just checked it out again, and I kind of goofed up. "Astrotit" it just one word, with no space between "Astro" and "Tit".

Image

(This is what "Astrotit" looked like.)

Here's a link to it:

http://www.abandonwaredos.com/abandonwa ... d=MTI2Ng==

Go ahead and see if you can download the game and play it. I think you will get a chuckle or two out of it.

"ASTROTIT" is a game from the past that you must play at least once before the flying saucers come and abduct you. Hurry up, time is running out.

p.s. This is NOT a game for prudish people.

I can't believe it. For kicks, I thought I would try to load an old game, that I have never played. Cut the celophane off the box to get to the CD's. Loaded them, and much to my surprise, the game seems to work on "Windows 7". It's much too late for me to try to play it, but I might give it a shot tomorrow.

Why the heck would this game from the past be compatable with "Windows 7", when I have dozens of other fairly recent games that refuse to play on this operating system?

The full title of the game is "Alone in the Dark, The New Nightmare", so I'm pretty sure that there are some other "Alone in the Dark" games that preceded this one.

Image .......... Image

Yep, I only barely started the game. However, so far it looks like it will run. I'm hoping it won't conk out before I get very far into it. (It even put an icon on my desktop to start the game, which seems to work.)

Anybody ever play this game?

It is getting very late tonight, so I will just leave you guys "Alone in the Dark". Goodnight, and hope to hear from you tomorrow...

p.s. According to Wikipedia, this game was released about 10 years ago, way back in 2001.)

Uwe Boll (God shred his soul) also directed a movie based on Alone in the Dark. I'd recommend watching it if you want a reason to end life's long journey.

In fact, just pick any movie he did, it doesn't have to be that one.

How did you ever load those cuneiform script stone tablet floppies into your computer back then? They would even predate the old 5 1/4" floppies I still have lying about. Do you think there is some kind of external cuneiform script stone tablet floppy drive, that would enable us to play those old Babylonian computer games again?

p.s. Don't worry, everybody, CLOUDY isn't about to post a top ten list of cuniform script stone tablet computer games from the past, that are worth playing. Though, as I understand it, a lot of them were pretty good. Oh, what the heck, I'll list one that I've heard is great, and you can beat it without having to resort to a walkthrough. If you can find it on the Internet or perhaps at some archaeological dig, you might want to give "Babylonian Battling Ninjas" a try. (It is nearly impossible to find the game unopened in the original shrink wrap.)

Cloudy, asking around the office I got some more ideas on your 5.25" floppy delima. Options suggested include going to a used computer store and seeing if they have an old system that has both a 5.25" and a 3.5" floppy drive, or if they have a spare 5.25 that they can install on your current system..

One can actually still play it online ( http://www.hammurabigame.com/hammurabi-game.php ). The luxury of this version is that it can have more than 8 characters in the name, so they can put in the second "m."

I have quite a few 3.5" floppy drives, I believe. I have no idea if they will work in a new computer.

Oregon Trail is now available as a Beta on FaceBook. I'll give it a go at home tonight. In the meantime, I'll be praying it's not a FarmVille clone

You can play Oregon Trail in a lot of places online, IIRC. It's also available on iPad.

I played Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego a while back online. That game was a LOT easier than I remember.

More than likely a new motherboard won't support an older IDE drive such as a floppy drive without putting in a separate controller card for it. Your best bet would be to purchase a USB external floppy drive. No extra installation needed then. As for the older 5.25", you'd probably have to go the controller card and internal mount method but I would think the operating system should still be able to read it. Not 100% sure on that though.

I think I have some old 5 1/4" floppy drives somewhere, and if not, I'm pretty sure they can be bought for something less than a king's ransom. However, they are all internal drives, and my new computer has no space to put them in. How do I do this? Is there some smart guy out there, who can configure one of these old 5 1/4" floppy drives to hook up to a USB cable that I can plug in, and actually run?

Thanks DANTE. I don't think I have a problem with the old 3 1/2" floppy stuff. I have two external USB drives that should work for them.

p.s. I haven't tried to use the 3 1/2" external USB drives yet. I've got a feeling that Windows 7 won't play anything that's on them, because the stuff that's on them is too old and probably incompatible with what runs our computers now.

Looks like we are straying away from "Computer Games New and Old". I think the last several posts would fit better into the "Computer Help" thread, which is also in the "Free for All" forum.

Let's hear from someone, who has played "Lords of the Realm II". The game is sitting right beside me, but I have never played it.

Damn, just tried to install it... Started fine, but it quickly stopped, with the message "64 bit incompatability"... Guess I need to fire my old Windows XP computer up, if I want to play some of these old games. I'm thinking, when it comes to computer games, I probably should have stayed in the past.

However, let's not worry about that on this thread. Let's just talk about computer games that are or have been fun to play, no matter how old or how incompatable they might be today.

Not having opened the case of a computer since the Clinton administration, I'm not sure if this is possible, but if the motherboard has the slot on it, you should be able (1) remove the case cover, (2) plug the data and power cable on to the motherboard/power supply, (3) power on the computer with the case cover still off, and (4) pray everything still works. No warranty expressed or implied.

Guys, would it be possible to crack the case of the 3.5" USB drive, remove the drive itself, and plug in the 5.25" drive? Might not be able to close/seal the case afterwards, but wire-wise it should be the same type of connector. No?

It's one of the earliest history-based computer games (developed not too long after "Hamurabi," actually), often used in schools and pre-schools as an educational tool to help kids understand pioneer life.

As ANON said, in the original you played as a pioneer family making its way west from Independence, MO to the Oregon territory. You had to manage your money, supplies, food and ammunition, try to keep safe (bears, bandits), warm (weather, arrive before winter), healthy (fevers, snake bites) and alive (drowning, dysentery). If you ran low on food, you could go hunting, so long as your ammo held out. Even if you found lots of game to shoot, you could only carry so much of the meat back to the wagon. River crossings could be treacherous, too, with the possibility of the wagon sinking. If that happened, or it caught fire, broke down, the oxen died, etc. etc., with no way to barter or otherwise get yourself unstuck, it was game over

It wasn't an easy game to win, but that was the lesson being taught, was that it was not easy for those people who chose to go and settle the west. Given the reverence for the game, it was a pretty successful method of teaching

The new version is much friendlier in actual gameplay, or maybe I've just been lucky to be eating all the berries I find without somebody getting poisoned, or a serious case of the shits. It is kinda interesting to see characters with a fever throw up as they walk, though

Spent many a quiet class period having the kids play Oregon Trail during the westward expansion section of my US history class.

The quiet was usually only interupted by comments like:

"SHIT!!! I got killed by a rattlesnake!!!"

or

"Will someone sell me a fucking wagon axle!"

How I loved technology back then. :)

You weren't joking...! I thought you were talking about Hammurabi in a humorous way, and you were kidding about not playing computer games since the time of Babylonia. I just tried the link you gave us, and golly willikers, it really was a game. (I think it says it was in Basic.) It looks like you can still actually play it on the site. I didn't try the game, because it looked like you would have to do some math calculations to feed your people, plant your fields, buy more acres, etc. I suck at math.

If I'm wrong, and a math idiot can acually play the game, let me know.

Do you remember how the game played?

Does this bring back memories...?
