Yes! Yes! Jackie Jensen has officially hit 10,000 rpm!

Hells bells. Despite the unfortunate fact that one of The California Golden Bears' most accomplished and famous athletes spent his baseball career with the eternally damnable FBOSOX Image, that eternally damnable franchise will remain eternally damnable for the rest of my life, due to the inexcusable nonfeasance during that time. I had never put it together before, Jensen is the only decent thing ever to come out of Hippy U., it explains why you are such a huge Red Sox fan. I thought FBOSOX meant something else... I didn't know it stood for Fan of BOSOX.

Hey! What did Pumpsie Green ever do to you...?
sigh...
I know what you mean. Willie Mays tried out for the Red Sox in 1949.
They could have signed Willie freakin' Mays.
Mays batting behind Ted Williams...what might have been...
The Braves passed on Mays also. Wow... Mays and Aaron in the same outfield. That would have been awesome.

Well, IIRC, it was Tony Cloninger of The Braves...a pitcher. Image

LilJol nails another one...! :D

The fact that it was a pitcher, who did it first for the National League in 1966, is incredible.

Check this link out:

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/feats/feats11.shtml

Assuming the site to be correct, 10 American League ballplayers have done it, and 3 National League Players have too. LilJol, you probably won't like this, but 4 of the American League players to do it played for the BOSTON RED SOX . :D

Yep, the answer is Tony Cloniger of the Braves.

Image

p.s. You probably won't like this either, but Tony finished his professional baseball career as a pitching coach and consultant for the BOSTON RED SOX . :D

p.p.s. I threw the Cloniger question in here to placate my anti-designated hitters friends.

Boston was the last big league team to put a Black player on it's roster. That man was Pumpsie Green in 1959.

Image

p.s. I just read that Jackie Robinson also tried out for the Red Sox, but was turned down. Back then, if Tom Yawkey wasn't such a racist fool, the Red Sox could have had both Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson playing for them. Thank God, times have changed.

I hear you guys bantering Jackie Jensen's name around. So, I will toss a Jackie Jensen trivia question up here.

Why did Jackie Jensen's baseball career end so soon...?

Image

I know that SPOTES knows, but I would like to see if anyone else knows the answer WITHOUT GOOGLING IT...!

The Red Sox were just waiting for a truly great African-American player to come their way. Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson just didn't measure up to Pumpsie Green.

I like Pumpsie's expression from the baseball card.

I just read a statement released by Hall of Famer Herman Killebrew that he is preparing for hospice care due to throat cancer. Sad.

If I'm not mistaken, Harmon is the model for the mlb emblem. Helluva slugger in his day.

Further research states that it wasn't modeled after any single player.

The year was 1959, but it wasn't Pumpsie. It was Earl Wilson, the 1st Black American League pitcher to throw a no-hitter. Unfortunately, some years later the Red Sox traded Earl to the Tigers.

Maybe I'm forgetting someone, but now I think you need to jump to 1966 and George Scott. George had a great sense of humor. Once, when he was asked what he planned to do before a game, George replied, "I'm going to hit the long tater for Magnolia." (Tater was what he called a homerun, and Magnolia was his mother.) After George was traded to the Twins, he started wearing a strange necklace that looked like tiny bones. When a reporter asked him what they were, George told him, "Dem's second basemen's teeth."

Now, I think you have to jump to 1971 and Luis Tiant. Someone said, when Tiant is on the mound in Fenway Park, he will look directly into the eyes of everyone in the stands at least once during the game, while winding up to throw the pitch.

I'm sure I must have missed a few prior to 1971, but I'm confident that SPOTES will remember them.

Image .......... Image .......... Image

p.s. For you anti-designated hitter people, Earl Wilson could hit.

Close, but if I remember correctly, Pumpsie's expression was caused, because while he was having his photograph taken, he saw SPOTES drinking HIS beer.

He's saying, "Hey SPOTES, put my God damn beer down!"

Well, he and younger brother Cornell were both athletic standouts at El Cerrito High School, the main rival of my high school (Berkeley) Image, though both played well before my high school days.

Alas, CLOUDY, Jensen's career ended due to his dislike (if not fear) of flying. Image

TOLLE, let's forget that further research. I'm staying with your initial idea. Like the Josh Gibson story that say's he was the only player to ever hit a homerun out of Yankee Stadium, I like possible baseball myths that could be true, and add to baseball lore. Plus, what's the problem with giving Killebrew that distinction? It could very well be true, and I think the guy deserves it, especially now.

p.s. The creators of the MLB logo probably based it on someone, and might not have wanted to admit it. I'm sticking with Harmon. :D

Image

Damn, that looks like Killebrew to me, and I guarentee you that is his stance, but more importantly, for sure that is his nose!

Got to give this one to LilJol once again. TIEFLY and SPOTES came up with interesting answers, which might have gone over my head, but I couldn't figure out that "know your server" bit. So, perhaps to CLOUDY's ignorance, LilJol wins again.

LilJol is absolutely correct, Jackie Jensen was terribly afraid of flying, and in 1961, when the Washington Senators moved west to Minneapolis-St. Paul to become the Minnesota Twins, I'm guessing that having to fly there was just too much for him.

p.s. Maybe Jensen was a visionary, and saw meals on airplanes disappearing, $30.00 charges for a suitcase, and Homeland Security checks to get on an airplane coming...?

Well, I do remember a few that you missed off the top of my head, but I'm sure this is no where near the complete list of black players from the Red Sox in the mid to late 60s.

Felix Mantilla played a few years for the Sox in the mid-60s.
The roster really started becoming integrated around 1966.
Joe Foy joined around then.
They picked up a utility player named George Smith that I remember because I found out years later that he used to be on the Indianapolis Clowns Negro League team with Aaron.
Does Jose Santiago count? He was of Caribbean mixed heritage.
The only glaring omission that I can see from your list is Reggie Smith. He finished second or third in ROY voting in '67.
Short of doing homework, that's all you're getting from me.

I can tell you're an anti-DH guy... that's Fernando Valenzuela taking batting practice right before the 1985 season. As far as pitchers went, he had a little bit of power.
