Liljol, I´m out of lucky guessing. I say give the other smart guys a chance to come up with the last two in 24 hours, and if no one can, tell us all who they are.

Great obscure question. :D

p.s. I´m still waiting for someone to venture a guess on my flamboyant on deck, warm up circle guy. :D

Not obscure at all. All pitchers who have led the league in K's three years in a row. The other three are Spahn, The Big Unit, and Tim Lincecum the last three years. So if he does it again this year he'll be the first in the modern era.

Unless your warm up circle guy dropped trou and swung his dick at the crowd regularly, I really don't care. :D

Rocky Colavito went through a warm up exercise in the on deck circle that would have probably won him a gold medal in Olympic gymnastic competition. I've hammered my fingers down to little stumps trying to find a video of Rocky warming up in the on deck circle on the Internet, with no success.

I'll bet you that it's out there somewhere. If one of you guys can find it, I will be forever grateful to you.

p.s. If you don't believe me, find some old guy, who was a serious fan of either the Cleveland Indians or the Detroit Tigers back in the late 1950's or early 1960's. I think they will tell you that I'm probably right.

Who was the radio announcer, who said this...?

“ Bobby Thomson... up there swingin'... He's had two out of three, a single and a double, and Billy Cox is playing him right on the third-base line... One out, last of the ninth... Branca pitches... Bobby Thomson takes a strike called on the inside corner... Bobby hitting at .292... He's had a single and a double and he drove in the Giants' first run with a long fly to center... Brooklyn leads it 4-2...Hartung down the line at third not taking any chances... Lockman with not too big of a lead at second, but he'll be runnin' like the wind if Thomson hits one... Branca throws... [audible sound of bat meeting ball]
There's a long drive... it's gonna be, I believe...THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! Bobby Thomson hits into the lower deck of the left-field stands! The Giants win the pennant and they're goin' crazy, they're goin' crazy! HEEEY-OH!!!'' [ten-second pause for crowd noise]

I don't believe it! I don't believe it! I do not believe it! Bobby Thomson... hit a line drive... into the lower deck... of the left-field stands... and this blame place is goin' crazy! The Giants! Horace Stoneham has got a winner! The Giants won it... by a score of 5 to 4... and they're pickin' Bobby Thomson up... and carryin' him off the field!"

Yep, "The shot heard 'round the world" back in 1951, and here is your hidden answer:

Russ Hodges

(To view the hidden answer, just left click on your mouse, hold it down, and drag it across the empty space above.)

I've read two stories about this. One says it was a Boston Red Sox fan, who recorded it. Another says is was Dodger fan, who asked his mom to record it. Whoever it was, it is a miracle that we have it to listen to today, because as I understand it, back then radio stations didn't keep recordings of baseball games that they announced.

Here's a brief video of Thompson's home run:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrI7dVj90zs

p.s. Everyone knows who threw the pictch, but does anybody know who was on deck when Bobby Thompson hit the home run?

The City of Chicago will never allow Wrigley to be torn down. It is a National treasure.

Which brings back the recent memory of me sitting on my poor tired lil old grumpy ass in my humble lil abode as The San Francisco Giants finally won The World Series after over fifty years following their move from The Polo Grounds. Somewhere, where ever he was, Russ Hodges was screaming as he did in 1951...

THE GIANTS WIN THE SERIES!
THE GIANTS WIN THE SERIES!
THE GIANTS WIN THE SERIES!

However, a far more memorable call to me of Russ Hodges' occurred during the first few years of The San Francisco Giants. It was a game when "Toothpick" Sam Jones was throwing a no-hitter, which would be denied after one of the most godawful, horrible official scorekeeping bungles in The Giants' history. As I remember it, a ground ball was hit at then Giants' shortstop Andre Rodgers, who proceeded to bungle it and make a late throw to first. Hodges screamed in disbelief after the scorekeeper made his call...

AND THE SCOREKEEPER IS CALLING IT A BASE HIT???

Hodges went on to bemoan several times during the rest of the game and during the post game "...if ever a man deserved a no hitter today, it was 'Toothpick' Sam Jones; the ball was a routine grounder..." :(

If you looked it up, I bet the official scorekeeper that day was Hilda Schusta.

I hate to admit but if MLB has to contract two teams, it gonna be the A's and the Rays for two reasons -- poor attendance and lousy stadiums.

The A's could renovate their stadium to make it less lousy , but Tampa won't help the Rays get a baseball friendly stadium built and they are contracted to the Trop though MLB has made it known to the team that they need to move out of their current facility.

I hope you are right, but I worry that someone will eventually tear down both Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. If there is enough money to be made destroying these national treasures and building new stadiums to replace them, I fear that someday they may be gone like all the rest. :(

Liljol, when did you become a Giants fan...? Was it before they left New York and moved to San Francisco?

I must add another sad loss of a no-hitter story:

Image

"As a 21-year-old rookie, Rohr made his first start at the New York Yankees' home opener on April 14, 1967. The slim left-hander faced future Hall of Famer Whitey Ford, and was one strike away from a no-hitter when Elston Howard hit a soft single into right-center field. Rohr proceeded to retire the next batter for a 3–0 shutout. In his next start, he beat the Yankees again, 6–1, but only won one more game in the majors after that."

Yeah, Rohr didn't get robbed out of his no-hitter by a scorekeeper, but what a great story that would have been, if Elston Howard didn't hit that soft single into right-center field with two outs and two strikes on him in the bottom of the 9th inning in Rohr's first game in the big leagues.

p.s. Has any pitcher ever thrown a no-hit game in their first start in the big leagues?

Yes.

In the modern era, Bobo Holloman.
Bumpus Jones also threw one back in the 19th century.
I know neither the years nor their real first names, but feel free to investigate further.

TIEFLY, don't get too excited yet. Heck, my Boston Red Sox are leading the American League East. They're a game and a half ahead of the Yankees right now, but there's a long way to go for all of us. Probably only Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox fans can understand what this means: "Pessimists are never disappointed." I will add that many times pessimists are pleasantly surpirsed. :D

Great answer, SPOTES. I checked it out and this is what I found:

http://www.suite101.com/content/bobo-ho ... ter-a30376

"Bobo Holloman is the only modern pitcher to pitch a no-hitter in his first start. According to Bill James, it was the second most unlikely no-hitter ever.

On May 6, 1953, in his first major league start, the St. Louis Browns’ Alva “Bobo” Holloman pitched a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Athletics. The twenty seven-year-old Holloman struck out three, walked five, and helped himself offensively by batting in three of the Browns’ runs with a pair of singles in the Browns’ 6-0 victory.

The Browns Paid $10,000 for Holloman's Contract
Bobo Holloman had pitched since 1946, but he wasn’t a very good pitcher. St.Louis Browns’ owner Bill Veeck, one of the great innovators in the history of baseball, sent $10,000 and pitcher Duke Markell to the Syracuse Chiefs in exchange for Holloman. If Bobo remained on the Browns’ roster, Veeck would have to send the Chiefs another $25,000. If he didn’t, they could return Bobo and absorb the $10,000.

On May 6, a rainy night in St. Louis, manager Marty Marion, with the blessing of Veeck, relented to Holloman’s claims that he was a starter, not a reliever. After four relief appearances in which he compiled an 0-1 record and an ERA of about 9.00, Bobo Holloman started the only major league game that he would ever complete."

Well if the Cards don't get a top line starter n better relief, then the Pirates should be OK. But the Buccos should add veteran help to push em further.

Obviously, those line drive hitters didn't listen to the man, who said, "Keep your eye clear, and hit 'em where they ain't."

What Hall of Famer gave us that advice...?

I know that most of you know the answer, but for those who don't, here is your hidden answer:

"Wee Willie" Keeler

This must be the Hilda Shusta you were talking about...

"Though Ebbets featured a domed rotunda enclosed in Italian marble, it was known for its carnival atmosphere and rough-hewn, blue-collar fans. When one fan yelled out at players who had struck out, "Ya bum, ya!," it caught on, and the Dodgers became known as "Dem Bums." A makeshift band of ill-talented musicians called the "Dodger Sym-phony" would beat drums and blow horns to songs like "Three Blind Mice." And in the center-field bleachers, a fan named Hilda Schusta would clang cowbells and drop notes of advice for the center fielder to take to the manager."

Am I right?
