Honus Wagner's baseball card was withdrawn soon after release at Wagner's behest, since he was a non-smoker.

LilJol does it again... He is absolutely correct.

p.s. LilJol, we probably need to tell everyone that the first baseball cards came in packs of cigarettes (and other tobacco products), not with bubble gum. They are called tobacco cards.

"Casey at the Bat" updated and political...

I stole this link from FrankC. It is funnier than Hell. Liberals might find it to be offensive, but we will find out if they have a sense of humor.

Here's the link:

I guess FrankC and I have different tastes, and a different concept of humor. Sorry, but I thought it was stupid. Ten years from now, Casey At The Bat will still be remembered as a classic in American Literature, while the above attempt at parody will not be remembered at all.

Can this thread return to a discussion of baseball now? And leave the right-wing political tripe to the "Republican Hopeless" thread where it belongs?

Yeah, we can do that, once you find a sense of humor... :D :D :D

I'm gonna back off on this. I don't want to send the "The Baseball Thread" off in the direction of political debate. Come on and admit it. It was well done and damn funny, even if it ruffled your feathers. :D Yeah, it might have been somewhat off topic, but I think it was okay to put it on "The Baseball Thread".

I thought the SNL Tina Fey skits making fun of Sarah Palin were pretty funny, even though I had political differences with them. I think it is a good idea to keep a sense of humor even if the humor isn't going the way you would prefer.

Here is a link to Tina Fey making fun of Sarah Palin, which I think is pretty damn funny:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdDqSvJ6aHc

p.s. I don't want to take "The Baseball Thread" off on a political tangent, but I thought I needed to respond to your post. Meet me over on the "Republican Hopefuls" thread, where we can cross swords in a better place than this. :D

ZOG, take this to another thread, or better yet start one of your own. Though I love you like a brother, I'm not going to reply to anything you post on "The Baseball Thread" that continues this nonsense.

Hell, I'll start it for you. By self appointed proxy, I am starting a new thread for ZOG. It will be called "Conservatives have no sense of humor".

My apologies (1) for making an off-topic post, and (2) for any feathers I may have ruffled in my last two posts.

No Cloudy, I did not find the video to be funny, not in the least. I suppose I could have chuckled over the President striking out to someone who threw like a girl (Sarah Palin), but I didn't draw that conclusion when I watched it and I don't plan on airing any reruns.

This thread is about baseball, not politics. Considering how divided this forum (let alone this country) is politically, lets keep politics out of The Baseball Thread. Perhaps Dante should even delete the last few posts here, leaving the Honus Wagner posts intact.

I have read, but refrained from posting on the Republican Hopefuls thread and plan to continue this policy at least for now.

ZOG, I agree with you. Let's keep this thread on baseball and related subjects. Please, no more debate here on the "Casey at the Bat" video I put up here on this thread. I took the liberty to create a new thread, in your name, where we can cross swords in a more appropriate forum called "Conservatives do not have a sense or humor". I don't think anyone has posted anything to it yet. Maybe nobody ever will, but go ahead and get things started.

Belated edit: I saw your post over there, and I will call DANTE tomorrow, and get him to delete the thread. I was an ass hole to create the thread. Please forgive me.

Moving along, who was the youngest American League player to claim the batting average title? (Perhaps he is the youngest in both leagues.)

Who held the stolen base record for the longest time...? (As the years go by this will probably change. I'm hoping that it hasn't already.)

Which record? Most in a game? Most in a season? Career? Most while not wearing underwear?

The other two have come up multiple times in STC.

That would be in a season. (At least I think so, I've had a few too many brewskis tonight, and I'm going to bed.)

Goodnight, BO and anybody else, who is still staying way up to late tonight.

Ha! My teammie and I were actually discussing this Monday night because of the base stealers category in STC.

Ty Cobb from 1916 to 1962 when Maury Wills broke it. For the record, I had to look up 1916.

Ty Cobb's career high in stolen bases (96) came in 1915.

You are absolutely correct. Good answer.

Though Fred Lynn was no longer a Red Sox, when he accomplished this feat, he started with the Red Sox. I believe Fred won the Rookie of the Year award, when he came up with the Red Sox.

You are absolutely correct again...! Cobb held that record for 46 years. Amazing...!!!

p.s. I've heard that Ty Cobb actually sharpened his spikes to harm those, who might be trying to tag him out, as he was stealing bases.

Belated edit: ZOG is right. Cobb set the record in 1915, so he held the record for 47 years, not 46.

The youngest player to win the American League title is still waiting for an answer. (I think it could be for both leagues.)

Baseball lore says that Ted Williams took him aside, and gave him some tips, the year he did it.

p.s. The guy was NOT playing for the Red Sox, and he spent his entire career with another American League team.
