What did Ted Williams never wear after his first season with the Red Sox...?

(There is a possible exception to this, while Ted was in military service.)

p.s. I know I'm killing you all with Ted Williams trivia questions. I promise to try to back off before too long.

Alrighty then, I have an easy one for you Cloudy... Which player went by the nickname of "Mr. Coffee"? (among other names)
HINT: He holds a record which will quite possibly never be broken.

P.S. spotes should nail this one.

Hell I knew this one, and yes, it was way too easy. I would have nailed it, if I hadn't been distracted by replying to AKBAR's post on the "Rebublican Hopefuls" thread. So NOMAR win's again...!

"Joltin Joe" was never known as "Mr. Coffee", when he played for the Yankees.

Image

This is the real "Joltin Joe":

p.s. I read somewhere that the Red Sox and Yankees actually considered trading Ted Williams for Joe Dimaggio, because Yankee Stadium would have better suited for Williams, and Fenway Park would have been better for Dimaggio. Thank God the trade never occurred.

While I have not been able to find anything to back this up, my understanding was (well before this interweb thingy) that DiMaggio was known in the dugout as Mr. Coffee (for his love of java, obviously) well before he was persuaded to shill for the coffee maker. He was a very private person & it took some effort to get him to do the commercials for 'Mr. Coffee'.

Hell, you might be right, and if you are, once again, I will learn something from you. However, can you come up with something that supports this, other than a vague memory? Now, I'm not saying you are wrong, but see if you can find something that confirms what you think you remember.

All I can tell you right now is that I remember having a discussion with a bar owner back in the early 80's about this, he was a Yanker's fan. He swore up & down that DiMaggio never went by the 'Mr. Coffee' moniker while in his playing days but I managed to find proof somewhere ( I remember not where) that he was. All this of course was before the interwebs made things easy to look things up. You actually had to crack a book & turn pages to find something.

As I remember, one of the backup bar tenders, who happened to be a sports writer for the local paper, backed me up on this. Skip Bryant. He came to be a good friend, unfortunately he has passed away. (I have a little side story about him at the paper if your interested) This guy was amazing. I think that I only stumped him once on a sports trivia question in all the years that I knew him. He was a walking, talking encyclopedia of sports. I think I still have one of his questions posed to me in my wallet.

I'll see what I can find.

Supposedly this happened in 1947ish after Yawkey and Yanks GM Larry MacPhail got drunk one night and agreed to trade players. As the story goes, Yawkey sobered up the next day and nixed the deal.
I've heard a few variations on this tale (such as: different years for when it took place, MacPhail refusing the deal because Yawkey also wanted Berra, a different Yankee GM involved, etc.) that make me wonder if it ever actually took place.
Plus, there's not enough liquor in the world to make someone dumb enough to trade Teddy Ballgame for an overrated hack like Dimaggio.

Did we ever get an answer to the RBI question...? If we did, I missed it, so here is my guess.

I did a little Google cheating on this, and I think the answer just might be Hank Aaron. (Did some more Googling, and I think my guess is wrong.)

Image

p.s. Here's another baseball trivia question. In the major leagues, who did Hank Aaron play for before the Atlanta Braves?

Yes, we did get an answer, from TCHNCB. Willie Mays was the answer; he is 10th on the career list with 1,903 RBI but never won an RBI title.

Of course the prior team that Hank Aaron played for was the Milwaukee Braves, before the franchise moved in 1966 to Atlanta.

Why do the places, I Googled say that Hank Aaron has the major league record for the most life-time RBI's...?

I might be wrong, but I know another team signed Hank Aaron, before the Milwaukee Braves. (Yep, it's really the same team, but it had a different city in its name.) Perhaps he never got beyond the farm teams for them, and perhaps he never suited up for a game, but I'm pretty sure I once had a Bowman baseball card, with Hank wearing their uniform. Maybe I'm wrong, and SPOTES will jump in, and straighen me out on this. The team I'm thinking about is the Boston Braves, and I know that Hank signed with them, before the team moved to Milwaukee. (I've seached my butt off, but can find nothing to sustantialte that Aaron, ever was on the Boston Braves roster. So I guess I must probably be wrong.) :(

My question was to name the Major League player with the most career RBIs, given that he never led or tied his league in that statistic in any one season. Yes, the career RBI leader is Hank Aaron, but he had four RBI titles. The career RBI leader among those with no RBI titles is Willie Mays.

Hank Aaron started his professional baseball career with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League. He signed a contract with the then Boston Braves and then played in their farm system for two years. By the time he reached the majors, in 1954, the Braves had relocated to Milwaukee. He spent his entire MLB career with the Braves until his last two seasons when he played for the Brewers.

Damn, I'm thinking you are probably right... I guess my memory of Hank on a Bowman, Boston Braves baseball card way back then must be wrong. Hell, this won't be the last time I'll wrong about something, but I wasn't completely wrong about Aaron being affiliated with the Boston Braves, when he moved up from the Negro Leagues.

This begs the question: who is the only player to play for the Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta Braves? (I rate this question "Easy", as I've seen it asked many times.)

Hint to Cloudy: it wasn't Hank Aaron.

Hint to Dante: it wasn't Napoleon.

...and when you submit your correct answer, it's important to remember his last name has only one "t". Points will be deducted for bad spelling.
Yeah...I'm looking square at you, Cloudy...

Here's another clue, the score was 3 to 3 at the end of the ninth inning. :D

Underwear?

Sailor suits? (You have to admit, that is something most people would only wear while in the military.)

Or perhaps you were looking for neckties.

You got it ZOG...! Ted hated to wear neckties. As I understand it, in his first year with the Red Sox, he wore them on road trips, because that was the team rule. However, after his first season at Boston, he thought he had some leverage, and the Bosox said it was okay, if he didn't want to wear a necktie anymore. I'm guessing that the exception to the "no necktie" thing probably occurred, when he was in the military. There are times in military service, when to be in proper uniform, you MUST wear a tie.

Ted was a naval aviator, both in World War II, and in the Korean War, but he wasn't a sailor. He was a MARINE pilot...!!! (So was I. All Marine pilots are naval aviators.)

Image .......... Image

p.s. Ted Williams nearly died, while flying in Korea. He barely flew his damaged fighter back to the airfield, put it down, climed out, and shortly thereafter, it exploded.

p.p.s. Yep, it was a The Grumman F9F Panther jet fighter that Ted was flying. It was a God awful terrible aircraft.

p.p.p.s. YOU ALL MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO CLIP... !!!

What do you think Ted Williams could have done, if his prime years in baseball weren't interrupted by WW-II and the Korean War...?

p.s. Ted Williams was a Marine Naval Aviator, and so was I. My dream was to follow in his foot steps. I think I could have played left field for the Red Sox, and have done a pretty good job, when I was young. However, without a designated outfielder rule, that would mean I would have to go to bat, and no team wants a player, who can't hit the ball out of the infield, and who's only hope to get on base would be to bunt every time. Heck, I was a pretty fast runner way back then, maybe I could have done it...
