I've been there four times.

Cooperstown is a wonderful place to visit.

Downtown offers dozens of baseball oriented shops.

Image

While you're there you should take in "The Farmer's Museum" and "The James Fenimore Cooper Museum".

Image .......... Image

p.s. If you know the story of the Cardiff Giant hoax, you can see the Cardiff Giant at the Farmer's Museum.

Image

p.p.s. Sadly, there is no NTN trivia in Cooperstown. You will need to drive all the way to Syracuse to play trivia.

i thoroughly enjoyed my last visit to Cooperstown. It was part of the last "road trip" I was able to take with my dad before his passing

Steve, my first trip to Cooperstown was in the summer of 1955, before I went into the 4th grade. I went with my dad also. Sadly, he passed away, without ever seeing his beloved Red Sox ever win the World Series. Until 2004 I thought that would be my fate also.

First post on this thread. I am going to cast a vote for who I would like to see win the World Series of 2011.

The Texas Rangers

Not because of the Texas Drought, both in water and in baseball

Not because Nolan Ryan hasn't been in the World Series since 1969, and is now the president of the team

I am on their side after reading this link:

http://news.yahoo.com/son-fallen-fan-th ... 51723.html

In brief, this young 6-year-old man, who threw the first pitch, was at the park earlier this year, when his dad tried to catch a foul ball. His dad, a firefighter, fell to his death trying to catch the foul ball for his son.

I honestly don't care about the sport of baseball, and I'm sure I will cause a few sparks on this thread for saying that. But, I do respect the Rangers for giving young Mr. Cooper Stone the honor of the first pitch of the playoff game.

Update. Sadly, the game that young Mr. Cooper Stone had the honor to have the first pitch, the Rangers lost 9-0 to some team from Florida.

Still, this will be something that he won't forget. To think what he can tell his kids, and his grandkids.

And Kids is what Baseball is all about.

YODA, what a sad, but sweet story... My eyes are not dry either after reading and watching it.

Here's the video that will bring tears to your eyes:

Though the Rangers might not do it this year, let us all pray that all goes well for this young man as the years go by.

Pick the two teams, that you think will be playing in the World Series this year.

I'll go out on a limb and guess it will be the Tigers vs. the Cardinals. What do you guys think?

In a prior thread I said I would like to see the Tigers and Diamondbacks. But I think the most likely World Series would be Yankees and Phillies, in which case the Phillies would be more likely to win. But that is too far into hockey season for me to even care at that point.

I need to put a time limit on your predictions. You can't hang back, and wait to see the way things are going. I will say that you guys/gals have 24 hours to stick your necks out, and post your predictions. That's more than enough time for you to tell us what you think. Fair enough...?

What a great link. I loved it, even though Maris was a Yankee. I will say that having Mantle on deck in the batting order didn't hurt Roger's great accomplishment. (They couldn't pitch around him.) I will also say that the steroid boys, who hit more homers than Roger in a single season, should have asterisks put after their cheating homerun records.

After watching Roger Maris's 61st home run video, I thought I would put the video of Ted Williams' last time at bat up here too:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM-mbxdA ... re=related

Image .......... Image
............................................................................................ September 28, 1960 (Ted was 42)

p.s. Both Ted Williams and Roger Maris wore number nine.

p.p.s. Ted Williams was one of but a few major league players to have played in four decades.

Given that almost a month has gone by, I believe it's safe to assume that no one has the correct answer.
It was NOT Jackie Robinson.
It was Moses Fleetwood Walker back in 1884 who integrated major league baseball.
I appreciate the lack of googling out there.
You guys are a veritable hen house of good eggs.

Sorry, I must have skipped over your question. However, I would have never gotten the right answer anyway. That is unless I cheated and Googled it. :D

Great question SPOTES. Thanks, I just learned something.

ICEMAN, how in the world do you get all of these great baseball feats down to the day, when they happened so many years ago.? Anyway nice video taking us into the past, and giving us a wonderful trip down memory lane. :D

If you read about it, you will learn that "The Shot Heard Around the World" was something that haunted Ralph Branca to his dying day.

p.s. I once heard some time ago that the only recording of Russ Hodges' radio call of Thompson's home run, that we all hear today, was reorded by some guy's mom, because he was going to miss the game, or something like that, and asked her to tape the game for him. Anyone know anything more about this...?

Heard the same thing years ago, but it's impossible to prove or disprove.
Given that it was the local Giants radio broadcast and not a national feed it certainly increases the odds.

I also seem to recall from somewhere that it was rumored that the Giants were sign stealers that season, and that it was believed that Thompson could have been tipped off as to what pitch might be coming. Have never researched this at all so I dont know if thats just sour grapes from the losing team and fans, but I do seem to recall there was at least a circulating story to that effect.

Harwell gives an explanation in the video.

That's the risk the Yanks took when they laid down in that last series against the Rays.
Sometimes you can't turn it back on.
Good thing they didn't use Rivera in game 162, though.
He really came in handy against the Tigers...
