Thank you to Cloudy and Dante. I pulled up Firefly on Netflix and I've watched the first 2 episodes already. I'm really enjoying it and you're right about the characters Cloudy.

A great series and a great movie. I need to watch them again.

I saw the movie before seeing the series.
It still holds up in its own regard without any previous exposure to the characters, but I can see how it would increase one's buy-in to certain plot developments late in the movie.
I've often wondered if some characters in the movie were originally meant to be introduced in the second half of the first television season; Mr. Universe, e.g..

Firefly is especially good when you aren't watching it on Fox, where they intentionally showed it out of order to kill it.

Cloudy, I'd also recommend you watch Breaking Bad, though it is a much, much darker show.

Here's a brief video of the pilot opening:

"Breaking Bad" (2008 - 2011) is a TV series. I guess I will have to check it out. Howerver, DANTE, after your "Firefly" and "Serenity" recommedations, everything else falls short, but I'll give it a try...

Dante, do you have any more recommendations for tv shows like Firefly? I'm almost done with the series and would like some others that are similar. Thanks!

I think the closest you'd find would be Farscape, for sheer quirkiness, character development, and imagination.

Breaking Bad is a better show, just far different, and far darker. Firefly leaves you feeling good; Breaking Bad just leaves you thinking (and admiring some fine acting).

For sure good feeling, though, nothing can top Modern Family. That show is like a natural anti-depressant, at least for me.

Firefly and Serenity are great, but I could never get in to seeing Malcom's father being a meth producer and dealer. I agree great acting on Breaking Bad, but depressinging. Modern Family is OK. The Simpsons are more like my family. I am becoming an old fart..

BrandyB, DANTE also got me to watch the entire "Buffy the Vampire" TV series (1997 - 2003) and "Angel" TV series (1999 - 2004), after "Firefly". (Both on DVD boxed sets.)

............... Image............... Image

Both are pretty good, but will cost a lot more than "Firefly", because these TV series lasted quite a long time. If you watch them you will find the characters loveable, but in my opinion they fall somewhat short of the characters in "Firefly". ("Angel" was a spin off from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".)

Had a hard time finding video that was representative of the "Buffy the Vampire" TV series. The best I could do was "Best Quotes". Here's the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYr0HMz7 ... re=related

Here's a link to some short video of "Angel":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8ttQrDNqWk

As I am sure that you know "Buffy the Vampire" TV series was a Joss Whedon creation based on the feature movie of the same title, starring Kristy Swanson. (1992)

Here's a short video of the feature Buffy film:

So far DANTE'S recommendations have been pretty good. (Some have been fabulous.) I say go with what he recommends until he suggests we watch some dumb movie that stinks.

Breaking news...! DANTE just sent me a private message with his next recommendation. Guys and gals, we all now need to go out and get "Plan 9 from Outer Space". (1959) DANTE says that we will love this film, and for all of you Bela Lugosi fans, this was his last movie.

Image

Here's a link to a trailer of one of the greatest movies ever made:

http://classicscifi.com/index.php?Itemi ... le&sku=375

p.s. Bela Lugosi died before the filming of this movie was finished, but filming went on with a stand in, who never showed his face to the camera. (This is actually true. No Joke.)

(I've got to tell the truth. I am so bad making silly stuff up, trying to be funny. The truth is that DANTE really did not recommend "Plan 9 from Outer Space". He actually recommended "Superman and the Mole Men" (1951).

Here's some great video of this classic film:

That is indeed an excellent movie. Caught that one a few year's back on Crackhead's recommendation. The imagery is absolutely beautiful, if occasionally disturbing.

I've wondered how its disturbing sociopathy played to contemporary audiences. That movie seems like it would be tough to emotionally digest by 1955 standards.

Luckily, that was the last movie for a lot of the cast... :D
Did you know that multiple Olympic gold medal winner Paavo Nurmi was the uncle of Vampira?
That always struck me as appropriately wacky...

In the theme of Plan 9 .... nearly nothing could rival it except, perhaps, The Room...
written, produced, directed by and staring Tommy Wiseau. I recommend viewing at least the trailer (all over you tube).

Many theatres play it as a cult classic... like Rocky Horror. If you go, bring plastic spoons. Trust me.

It's... Epic.

Judging by the few other things I've seen from that time frame, I would imagine they would burn the theatre after seeing it, or maybe just look down in disapproval at "that Satanic movie."

If you haven't watched it, I'd also recommend the new Battlestar Galactica. People got upset with the last episode (I personally liked it a lot, but I was in the very small minority), but even if the payoff isn't worth it, it was one of the better TV shows on in a long time.

Since this thread seems to be turning toward TV...

Yep, SyFy/SciFi/the Science Fiction Channel has put out some good series, BG being one of them. Another good one was Caprica, a prequel to BG. Unfortunately it only lasted a short time.

While SF started out showing the likes of Lost in Space reruns, they quickly progressed by picking up such shows as Stargate from Showtime. Once they had Stargate (the longest running scifi series, Dr. Who doesn't count) they expanded to Stargate Atlantis & Stargate Universe. SA was pretty good but SU was a bit too dark for many & didn't last too long. I enjoyed it though & was left wanting more.

Some other good ones on SyFy are Haven, Sanctuary & Warehouse 13.

One of the new shows that is interesting is Terra Nova on Fox.
If it hasn't been mentioned before, The Sons of Anarchy on FX is well worth your time.

Don't forget the greatest Sci-Fi show ever that Syfy shows almost non-stop now: wrestling!

"Wedlock" (1991) is a fairly interesting sci-fi movie about a futuristic prison, where prisoners wear explosive necklaces. Each prisoner is linked to another prisoner, but they have no idea who the other prisoner is. If either of them strays more than 100 yards from the other, both of them will get their heads blown off. This makes escape extremely difficult. I thought it was pretty good, and some of you might want to check it out.

It might be too violent for some of you, but here's some video from the movie:

"Teenagers from Outer Space" (1959) is another great black and white, sci-fi, B-movie from the 1950's. However, it is only a recommened for old folks, who want to relive the terror that saw at the theater, when they were young, and really didn't know what good sci-fi movies were like.

Here's a link to the orginal theatrical trailer:
