I have met several celebs as I worked for a hotel in my past life. Probably the most interesting celeb story was Ashley Judd. In 2008 on Pole Day at Indy - I got access to the pits with a collegue of mine. He knew Ashley and introduced me to her. We spent 30 minutes talking College Basketball - she is a down to earth good person.

I think the year was 1975, but it might have been later. The broker across the credensa form me in the Merrill Lynch office, Bill Krause, asked me if I would like to meet John Wayne. I told him, "Hell yes". Bill said, "Then go up to the bar on the top floor of the Galt House, and wait outside the doors. He should come out around 4:00 o'clock." I went up there and waited. When I got there about six other people were there there waiting also. Son-of-a-gun, I didn't have to wait too long before the bar doors opened, and out walked John Wayne. He was a big man. When I got my chance to say something to him, I told him that I was a Marine, and that he was the greatest honoray Marine of all time. He looked me in the eye, his very large hand grasped mine, and he said something like, "Thank you, but it's the guys, who were really Marines, that I admire."

You are probably asking yourselves, how in the hell did Bill Krause know where and when John Wayne would be that day. The answer is that Bill had been a FBI agent, before becoming a stock broker, and I think he still had FBI buddies, who told him. He probably shouldn't have passed John Wayne's whereabouts on to me, but seeing that Bill has passed away, I don't think this story will get him into any trouble.

p.s. John Wayne was in Louisville that day, because he was the grand marsall of the Pegasus Parade for the Kentucky Derby.

I met Megumi also, probably when you did, SCAR. I got his autograph, and had my picture taken with him. Did you...?

SCAR. you swan against Mark Spitz, and almost beat him. I think that probably trumps meeting Megumi. If memory serves me, I believe you have also met a lot of Olympic gold Medal swimmers.

p.s. SCAR should be wearing Olympic gold around his neck too, but the four year cycle between Olympic games did not work out for him. In his time, he was one of the very best swimmers in the world. SCAR, I know you are modest and humble, please don't be upset with me for tooting your horn for you.

p.p.s. Do you think it is too late for you to go back into training, and give it another shot...?

RANGER, get your picture taken with SCAR, and get his autograph next time you meet him. He probably won't talk about his swimming feats until he's had a few brewskis, but when he gets a few under his belt, he will tell you tales about his past swimming prowess that will greatly impress you.

Back in 1978 I was with a teenage friend, another guy, in the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, when Barry Goldwater passed us. We were big fans of his, and we managed to stammer out a few words along the lines of, "Good afternoon, Senator Goldwater." To our surprise, he stopped and exchanged a few words, seemingly very interested in who we were and eager to talk with us.

Looking back, I'm positive that it was my foot-long Afro and my friend's shoulder-length hair that got Senator Goldwater's attention. He had to be wondering who his new fan base was and how we came to be conservative Republicans despite looking like hippie protesters with long hair and blue jeans.

In Las Vegas in 1973 I (literally) ran into Redd Foxx. Well, not quite. He was playing baccarat and a friend pointed him out to me. Later I saw him leaving. I didn't want to bother him, so I tried to stay out of his way, but wound up right in front of him. I excused myself. but he slapped me on the shoulder and said "What's happening bro?" and kept walking.

I worked at a department store in Indy during my high school years when Larry Bird, straight off of his third MVP season, came in and bought some clothes one day.
He was paying with his credit card when I asked "Can I have your autograph, please?"
He said "Sure" and started to grab a pen and sign a random piece of paper.
I told him "No, sir. I need it for your American Express charge."
The look on his face... priceless.

I just deleted a fairly long reply to your post, because I was afraid that someone would turn this thread into some policitcal attack bullshit, and DANTE would feel compelled to lock the tread, as he did on the "Waiting for Superman" thread, which was a discussion of education in the United States. However. I will go out on a limb, and say I wish that I could have met Barry Goldwater too. Edit - delete - edit - delete, I cannot post anything more for fear of what might follow.

In a rarity rivaling lead spontaneously converting to gold, I'm in complete agreement with Mr. Ale. You really need to cease throwing out those little political jibes, even if you think they're indirect or harmless.
Or maybe just stop posting at o-drunk-thirty.

How politically correct and sensitive is the "ScaRatings" going to become...? I thought as long as we did not attack anyone personally, and were polite and respectful to each other, that differences of opinion were acceptable here. I am very disappointed that the "ScaRatings" will no longer allow people to debate anything that might be considered the least bit controvercial, or even hints at possibly being the slight bit controvercial. We are adults. We have different ideas about things, and in my opinion as long as we discuss those differences, without going ad hominem, I think that the locking of threads is very silly.

I think that what DANTE said is right, and the "ScaRatings" should continue to allow people to express themselves in a polite and sensible manner, even if others might have different opinions. I can see nothing wrong with debating differences of opinion, as long as that debate remains polite and respectful.

We're getting to that soon. Just got back from my trip out of town this weekend, and haven't gotten a chance to type of the new rules.

And I do not agree with the idea that everyone on this forum is an adult. I agree chronologically that may be true, but at least a handful showed otherwise regarding their actions.

But back to the regularly scheduled thread.

I met Luke Perry about ten years ago. He was in my favorite bar at the time, sitting by himself. We didn't bother him, though, as he didn't seem particularly happy.
That's one wee little dude, whatever the internet says. I'm pretty sure he's smaller than I am, which is saying something, as the only other famous person I've met who was smaller than me is Tom Cruise (he may be 5'7 in 6 inch heels).

I didn't respond to Cloudy's whine earlier here, a couple of days old already, nor to his latest from last night where he cuts n pastes crap that anyone concerned has long since read, as if he's dispensing secret information. No need. And you didn't need to respond, either, did you? Certainly not with this snide little display.

I agree not everyone here is an adult. Starting with whoever it was that came bawling to you about threads nobody had held a gun to their head and made them read, but that somehow they were unable to keep their little eyes away from. 'Oh, that's awful! Lemme see it again. Oh, that's awful!' Why you didn't respond to them not to bother you with complaints about threads they could avoid is beyond me.

And let me remind you, the dustup that furnished the nail in the coffin of our little back-and-forth involved a poster who had been nothing BUT an adult, nothing but civil and friendly and jovial, until a certain somebody's childish bullshit drove him to displaying a smidge of righteous incivility. Whereupon whomever it was with the OCD apparently bombarded you with won't-somebody-think-of-the-children pm's, until you couldn't sleep or something.

Years ago, when the WVU coliseum first opened, the LA Lakers played and exhibition game against the New York Knicks.

My dad allowed me to wait by the team buses after the game. There I got to shake hands with Gale Goodrich, Clyde Frazier (who was wearing a fur coat), and Willis Reed (who had the biggest hands I've ever seen).

Also in the basketball list are Meadowlark Lemon, Goose Tatum, and Curly Neal (especially cool, since around the same time, the Harlem Globetrotters were featured on Scooby-Doo and then had their own cartoon.

Finally, I was slammed into a wall by Hot Rod Hundley after stealing the ball from him at his basketball camp. Complete egomanical ass (him, too...EGADS!!!).

Thought I would make a few comments before this thread is locked down. One, anyone that knows Cloudy, should know not to take 99% of his stuff seriously. I will ignore most of it myself. Yes, maybe he should not post a lot of it. But, Cloudy likes to talk endlessly about anything. Given everything that goes on in this world there is nothing that he posts worth going crazy over. If he says something that gets your goat just tell Cloudy to give it a rest and chances are he will move on. For those attacking Dante, I say get a life. Everyone should be grateful that he is even doing this. He easily can be doing something more constructive. I consider myself lucky to even know him and I don't say that about many people.
In my life I have met tons of famous people. At one time, I dealt with many people in the sports license business and had dinners and meetings with a lot of pro sports stars and league management people. These days I work more on the college level and with manufactures of licensed product. I have been to just about every major sporting event and the league parties that went with them. Today, the major events for me are Final Fours and the College World Series. My office is filled with autographed pictures and balls. Plus a bunch of stuff from those events. I enjoy my job and consider myself lucky just to even be involved.
Hopefully, Dante can work things out here and we can all just get along.
