I was long gone from the nest, married, and flying helicopters for the Marines, when my mother bought the Odyssey game. I saw it one time, while visting the family, and played "Ping Pong" and perhaps "Tennis", but I never played any of the other games Odyssey offered. If I had to make a wild guess, Magnavox's basic system didn't include the other ten games, and you had to buy them as add on's.

Best I can remember, I only played "Table Tennis" and "Tennis". I no longer lived at home, when my mother bought the Odyssey system, and only saw Odyssey one time, while visiting the family, when I was in the Marine Corps. I have a feeling that my mother only bought the basic game for my two brothers, who still lived at home, and that Magnavox didn't include the more interesting add-on games with the basic package. Anyone know if I'm guessing right...?

p.s. Other plug-in to your TV console games came much later for me. (Even though I paid for them, and played a few, they were mostly for my kids.) However, it's getting too late for me tonight to get into them.

If you can find the "C64 Direct-to-TV" (basically a joystick with the C=64 on a single chip), Impossible Mission (and its sequel) were included on there.

NOLES, thanks for the link to "Gamebase64". I scanned through it a little while ago, and it looks very interesting.

That's definitely it. I would spend hours playing that game. That's definitely a game that could be redone on one of today's systems and be just as fun. And every now and then you'd hear the bad guys voice when you went into a room saying "Destroy him, my robots" in his evil English accent as well as at the very beginning when he says "another visitor....stay awhile....stay forever" as Noles mentioned above :D

Here's some video footage of the Commodor 64 "Impossible Mission" game. It looks pretty good to me, and reminds me of a bunch of pc games like it, that I played back in the good old days.

I remember seeing somewhere on youtube, there was footage of a guy playing this game from beginning to end. I think total, it was about 15 minutes long. It really wasn't a hard game once you got the gist of what was going on but still loads of fun nonetheless.

Several years ago I picked up three "Brain Games" computer games. They make you think outside of the box, and they have a bunch of problem solving puzzles. I think they are a series, and I have no idea as to how many of them are out there. They don't cost very much, and I think you might find them fun, if not somewhat challenging.

Anyone ever run across any of the "Brain Games" series?

These are games to stimulate your mind after a week or two of too many brewskis.

"Slingo" was originally an on-line game that many people played against each other live, and still do. It was (is) a mixture of Bingo and playing a slot machine at the casino. Now, you can play the game in the safety of your own home for just a few bucks to buy the CD's. I believe that there are several "Slingo" CD's out there waiting for you. (I only have the "Slingo Quest" CD.)

Image

None of the versions of "Slingo" are what anyone would call intellectual computer games. However, as dumb as the games seem, there are some strategies that I have figured out that will help you to do better. If anyone plays this game, and would like to know CLOUDY's strategies to improving your "Slingo" scores, I will galdly share them with you. (I should add that so far, I have only played the original on-line game and the "Slingo Classic" game on the CD, which is as close as you can get to the original on-line game. The other fancier versions on the CD will be for you to figure out on your own.)

"Slingo" is a great game to open up and play whenever you wake up at 3:00 a.m., your sleeping pills don't seem to be working, and you're looking for some kind of entertainment that will probably put you to sleep, while having some fun, as you wait to conk out.

Here are two links some interesting info about "Slingo Quest":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzwiKjToMEU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl-BSGYj ... re=related

p.s. After watching these two links, it looks like the new versions of "Slingo" are becoming much more complicated than the original simple, nearly mindless game that we once played online all those years ago.

p.p.s. According to them, females between the ages of 35 and 59 are their target market. Hell, I don't qualify either way, but I still think the original (or Classic) "Slingo" is a fun game to play, when you have nothing else to do, no matter how old you are, or what sex you might be.

"AGON, The Mysterious Codex" (2006) is a problem and puzzle solving game. It's pretty tough, and for most a walkthrough will probably be needed at certain points. If you can manage it without having to consult a walkthrough, my hat is off to you. Perhaps I am too impatient, but I used a walkthrough, because of a number of reasons. Not the least of which, is that I prefer to work my way through a game in a number of days, not months.

I don't want to sound too negative about this game, because besides its shortcomings, it is a pretty good game nonetheless. However, I will list the things about the game that drove me to use a walkthrough anyway.

1- Some of the things you need to find for your inventory are not obvious, and are very easy to miss. The game allows you to leave things you need in a room or other areas, and move on to where it is impossible to progress without the thing you skipped over, and you have no idea what you might have missed, or where it was.

2- You will find all sorts of books, letters, documents, etc., that are often pages long. Most of what you have to read is just there to embellish the story, and has nothing to do with solving the game. However, you can't skip all of this stuff, because some of it does provide important clues.

3- Moving between locations often involves a lot of unnecessary clicking through screens that are there for no good reason, where you waste time in areas that have nothing to find or do.

4- Maneuvering with the mouse is not fluid, and sometimes is a little bit frustrating. (It's not terrible though.)

5- Many times what you need to do to progress is total guesswork. You have no idea what to do, and there are a million possible guesses that might be the way to go.

Without a walkthrough to help you get on the right track from time to time, most of you will give up on this game in frustration fairly quickly. With a walkthrough to help you at certain points this is a darn good game. Though I am only a little beyond a forth of the game, I and my walkthrough plan to play it to the finish.

The game loads to and plays on Windows 7 with no problem, and I'm sure that it will play on Windows XP just as well, if not better.

p.s. To load the game you MUST enter the 16 character registration code, that is stuck to the inside of the jewel case that the CD comes in. When entering the registration code, you have to include the dashes that separate each of the four number sequences. Once the game is installed, it will play off your hard drive, and you do not have to have the game CD in a CD drive for the game to work

p.p.s. Now that I have told you all of the bad stuff about this game, I say, give it a try. I think you will actually like it.

Image

.............. "Hello, CLOUDY says to try this game."

Here's a link to the trailer of the game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCfpNdgEbws

p.p.p.s. I think here is a sequel to this game called "Agon,The Lost Sword of Toledo", which I guess I will have to get. :D

(Belated edit. I'm still playing the game. I'm into Madagascar now. I was stumped for a very long time, because the pot of rice refused to cook to feed the starving man in the treehouse, until I went back up into the treehouse, and offered him the bottle of wine from my inventory. I have made it through the bewildering maze of the jungle to the grave with the nine small posts to organize in proper order, but I think I have stupidly plucked one of them out of the ground, and only have eight. I'm not giving up, and will try my best to figure out how to correct this mistake to progress.)

(Another belated edit: I solved the problem of the missing grave post, and have gone on to finish the game.)

"NOX" (2000) is a game that sat in its box still wrapped in its cellophane for years, until I stumbled across it today, and decided to see if it would play on Windows 7. Even though it loaded with no problem and looked like it was playing well at the beginning, I didn't think it would be any good. WRONGO, it's a great game, if you like killing monsters and bad guys. I've gotten fairly far into it, and so far there is no problem or puzzle solving involved. It is pretty much pure combat. The instructions describe a bunch of things you can do on your keyboard, while playing the game. However, I've muddled my way through pretty much by just using the mouse.

There is a lot of running around, and you can get killed very often throughout the game, so I strongly advise that you save your game very frequently. The game also includes buying and selling of items at various little shops to upgrade your weapons and armament, as well as making sure that you are carrying enough life restoring items along with you. Selling items that you don't need or have unnecessary duplications of in your inventory help you to raise cash for things you need to buy.

It starts out quite easy, but the farther you get into the game you will run into ever more powerful and numerous bad guys that swarm on you to kill. The game is not completely mindless combat. You need to be a little clever to make your way through the gauntlet test.

This is an extremely well designed game, and I highly recommend it to those of you, who like to fight their way through a game.

Here's some of what Wikipedia says about it:

"Nox is an action role-playing game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2000 for Microsoft Windows. It details the story of Jack, a young man from Earth who is pulled into a high fantasy parallel universe and has to defeat the evil sorceress Hecubah and her army of Necromancers to return home. Depending on the player's choice of character class at the beginning of the game (warrior, conjurer, or wizard), the game follows three largely different linear storylines, each leading to its unique ending. In the multiplayer, players can compete against each other in various game modes such as deathmatch and capture the flag, or cooperate against computer-controlled monsters in the "Quest" mode introduced with the latest patch. The game was generally well-received by the critics and media."

(I am playing it as a solo player, and chose to play the game as a "Warrior".)

Here's a link to some video of the first part of the game with commentary from a computer game geek:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1SgqeE45oc

p.s. Installation did not put a short cut icon on my desk top, and you must have the CD in a CD drive to play the game.

Image

................................................ I ain't got this far yet.

(Belated edit. I've kept fighting my way through this game, and I think I am getting pretty close to the end. I will share this with you, as you get close to the ultimate final showdown, you are better off running past the bad guys when possible, rather than taking them on. There are too many of them, and they come at you too fast from all directions. Once again, it is critical that you save your game very frequently, even though you may have only progressed a short distance. The more I get into this game the higher a recommendation it becomes.)

Allow me to whisper this... "escape Whisper Valley" SUCKS...! ! ! Don't waste $9.98 on this mindless, pretty much nothing but a dumb hidden object game. Use your $9.98 to buy a six-pack of beer, and study your wallpaper, while you drink it instead. That will give you a much better entertainment factor per dollar spent.

This is about as interesting and challenging as "escapte Whisper Valley" gets.

Actual number is 4, but part ten has yet to be released

Played heavily: Tetris, SimCity, Super Mario Bros. 3, Worms Armageddon*
Tried: Angry Birds**, Mortal Kombat, Dance Dance Revolution, Call of Duty, Pacman, Donkey Kong Country, Galaga, GoldenEye 007, Pong, Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Want to try: Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Space Quest, Earthworm Jim, Minecraft

Thanks, PENGWN, I went to the site you gave us the link to. However, my top 100 list would be very different. My first guess is that Michael Irving (Who I believe created this list.) would be a younger person from my perspective. Some of the games he listed might be good, but many are ones that I have never heard of, and I've played a lot of them. Also there are so many great games that do not make his list. I have to come away from his "100-games-you-must-play" list with the feeling that these are only the top 100 games that he has played, and the types of games that he likes. For the most part he omits the really great games that got comupter gaming started, and moved it forward. He has also overlooked a great many games that were wonderful, even though they never became mainstream games. Good Lord willing, CLOUDY will create his own "100-games-you-must-play" list sometime in the near future. Sadly, many of them will not play on present day versions of Windows, on newer home gaming systems, or are from video arcades from the past, that are now long gone. However, you emulater geniuses should have no problem getting them up and running. :D

I'm sure that Michael Irving is very knowledgeable and great gamer, however when he omits computer games such as "Myst" and its sequels, ignores "Duke Nukem", overlooks virtually all of the Infocom games, somehow misses the entire "Tomb Raider" series, forgets about the very early games such as "Castle Adventure", "Sopwith", and the original "Castle Wolfenstien", and more, never mentions any of the "Commander Cody" games, and so many others, I must think that Michael Irving's list, is but his list of games that he liked to play over the years, without considering anything else.

................................................................. Image

Big Fish Games are pretty damn good. Yeah, most of their games could be classified as "Hidden Object Games", but they ain't the completely stupid type, where all you have to do is mindlessly find things that are hidden in a screen with hundreds of things to search through, and once you're done throw another, and another, and another, and another dumb screen of yet more of hundreds of things to hunt through to find the few that you need to progress to more of their mindless bull shit...

The Big Fish games will give you a few of those stupid hidden object screens, but they are few and far between. Big Fish games are mostly puzzle and problem solving games. Games where you have to think your way to the finish. They are fair with their clues, and I would believe that most could work their way through them without having to resort to a walkthrough. Admittedly, a few of the puzzles are so tough, that after a half hour of trying to figure them out, you will probably say, "What the F---. and hit the "Skip" button.

BrandyB, loves Big Fish games, and so far so do I... :D

"Redemption Cemetery, Curse of the Raven" is a Big Fish game, and it is a game that people, who like to think, solve problems, figure puzzles out, and have fun while doing it should try. I'm pretty far into it, and highly recommend the game. If you are any good, you should be able to work your way though it without having to go to a walkthrough, though you will likely have to "skip" at least one puzzle somewhere in the game. (I've skipped two so far.)

Image

................................ (Neat place, you should visit it sometime.)

Here is a link to a visual walkthrough, that I don't think you will need. I only put this link up here to give folks an idea of how the game goes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kn9wLRfN78

Belated edit: I have finished the game. It is a game that is fairly challenging, but gives you good clues to be able to progress without having to resort to a walkthrough. It is a damn good game, and I will once again say that I highly recommend it for gamers, who enjoy figuring things out and problem solving.

p.s. I am surprised that BrandyB didn't beat me to the punch on this one. It's a game that is right up her alley.

LilJol, I'll check it out. It's too late tonight for me to get into it, but I promise you I will go there again tomorrow. Thanks for the tip. I'm always open to new computer games. I need a little help, is this the game you are talking about:

If not, please steer me in the right direction. :D

Yep, that's it. :)

How do I get the game...? Is it something I download from the Internet or buy on a CD?

Looks like you have a choice of either a CD or a download, from the PhantomEFX store. Then again, maybe you can do better than their list price of $19.99 if you shop around a lil. ;)

LilJol, I'm getting ready to get "Reel Deal Slot Mystery: Pyramid Conspiracy", but before I fork $20.00 over, I would like to know how the game plays. (If it only cost $5.99, I would't be asking you this question.) Please tell me how the game plays. Thanks. :D

Well, considering that I haven't yet bought and downloaded this yet... :o

Based on how PhantomEFX has done past similar games (except for the hidden object features), one starts by spinning one of the available slot machines (not all listed are at the start) to achieve a certain goal (e.g., win x credits or win x spins, no limit). After the goal is achieved, one then may get an item (and then figure out what to do with it), or then have to achieve another goal. As the game progresses, additional slots are made available (unlocked), more items are earned, and the goals get harder (e.g., win x bonus round credits in x spins).

Suggest that you also bookmark the PhantomEFX Forum (http://boards.phantomefx.com/index.php), as there is a thread with a few posts from other subscribers who are already stuck at some point. :(

Liljol, I checked it out tonight, and the closest I could find on Amazon.com was "Reel Deal Slots, Mysteries of Cleopatra". I went ahead and bought it, hoping that it is somewhat like the game you recommended.

"Redemption Cemetery, Children's Plight" is the sequel to "Redemption Cemetery, Curse of the Raven". This is a great game, and highly recommended by CLOUDY. Once again, you shouldn't need to resort to a walkthrough to finish this game, even though you might decide to skip a puzzle along the way. (I skipped two.) What really held me back was I missed the glove and the large light bulb at the top of the ladder while searching the mansion. This caused me to backtrack to the very beginning of the game, (Which is a very long way to go back to go, but what did I know...?) and inch my way forward before I finally found them. This is a damn good game. The clues to advance are always there, if you can find them, and figure them out. It's a really fair game, even though, it will make you have to figure a lot of things out that aren't all that easy.

Here's a link to a little bit of game play:

This and more waits for you, if you dare to try "Redemption Cemetery, Children's Plight".. I probably shouldn't you this, but as much as you might goof up you cannot die in this game. :D
