I do believe the Sears Catalog in book form is now gone. It died in 1993. As a little kid my mother and I went through every page of the toy section picking out what I was going to ask Santa to bring. Santa and Sears hooked up every Christmas in the 1950's, and what I picked out was always under the tree Christmas morning. I would love to find the Sears catalog from 1951 or 1952 to see the farm set, barn, cows, chickens, pigs, et al, that Santa and Sears delivered to me that Christmas morning all those years ago.

Yeah, this is another "Rosebud" memory for me.

Do you remember the Spiegel catalog? It was a competitor of Sears along with Montgomery Wards.

Spiegel catalog... That would have been too upscale and expensive for our family back then. My dad was a professor at Hobart College in Geneva, New York, at the time with two kids, and making $2,000 a year.

And in Canada, it was the Eaton's catalogue. Well, until 1976, anyway

A century ago, you could order an 8-room house for under $1000 (some assembly required, batteries not included)

Is that deal still going...? Heck, I'll take four of those houses, if I can link them all together. Even if that meants that I have to move to Canada, I wouldn't mind it, because it would give me enough room for all of the junk that I have amassed over the the the years. I don't care if I have to move to Nunavut, I'm ready to go, and have started boxing my junk up, just in case the deal is still available.

Please don't tell me that I'm 100 years too late. I can handle some assembly, and I've got more than enough batteries to power up, until I get a generator on line.

Here is what the approach to the southern front door of my Canadian house will look like:

Image

Of course that would only be 1/4 of the massive square footage of my new Canadian home would be. :D

p.s. Just in case it works out, I'm learning to sing this:

You could buy a house from the Sears catalog around the 30's 40's and I think into the 50's. The stuff came by rail, and basically you just started building it. There should be plenty of articles on the 'net about this

Somehow, I picture The House That Cloudy Built to more closely resemble the Weasley's Burrow

Weasley's Burrow...? Dang, I had to Google it.

Actually, it doesn't look all that bad to me. It's kinda neat. However, at my doddering old age, I think I will need to have an elevator put in. There is no way I could cary all of my junk up using the stairs.

There used to be a rule in basketball about "palming the ball".

It read something like this:

"Palming - a violation committed by a dribbler that involves placing the dribbling hand under the ball and momentarily holding or carrying it while dribbling."

This is what "palming the ball" looks like:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPuJbTN9VRE

However, I don't believe I've seen a ref call this infraction for at least the last 40 years. I think it is still a rule, but why is it now almost never (perhaps "NEVER") called anymore?

Image

I'm waiting to hear the whistle...

Image

p.s. Also, why are players driving on the basket now allowed to take pretty much as many steps as they want, without having to dribble the ball?

Do balsa wood gliders still exist...? I don't think I've seen one for many years. The fanciest versions had rubber band powered propellers.

Cloudy, I crashed many of those balsa wood airplanes or lost them in trees or on roofs. I do not think I have seen them, since the mid 60's. They were fun.

I found one of those once. Figured it was a toy torpedo lost from some kid's submarine or something. I never could figure out why the head was spring-loaded, though. Thank you for filling in that knowledge gap, Frank :)

My grandma used to have a huge supply of caps in little twisty paper bowties. Just throw them to the floor or other surface hard enough, and they'd explode. We both used to have lots of fun scaring the crap of out my aunts and cousins when they happened to visit at the same time as me

Don't think I ever had a "Cap Bomb" per se, but I had something like it. You put the cap(s) in it, and threw it into the air, where it would come down on some kind of pavement, and BANG...! As I vaguely recall, mine were mostly plastic, and looked a lot like a Flash Gordon rocket ship.

However, I think there is something similar that can be found nowhere today.

The cowboy pistol that took paper roll caps is GONE...! (The paper rolls were red, with dark bumps, where the powder was. The darn things often got off track, and you would have to open your pistol up to get it feeding properly again.)

Image.......... Image

.......................... Hopalong Cassidy's cap guns never hurt anyone, mainly because my buddies would yell out, "You missed me." after I pulled the trigger.

..................................................................... Image

................................... "Kids, keep your guns holstered, unless Hoppy tells you to draw, and if you pull the trigger, make sure that you are only shooting paper roll caps."

Do you guys and gals remember the news reels at the movie threater...? They were great, and almost always patriotic. (Today some would say that they were propaganda.)

Lowell Thomas always did propaganda, especially if it benifiited him. Yes, I am old enough to remember newsreels, short subjects, snd cartoons between double and triple features.

Well, hell. I have no pic of one, but something tells me that some of us here remember the preceding generation of grey Playmakers with the antennas. Man oh man, there were some great things we could do with those...

Play with the antennas. ;)

Royally screw some annoying, unsuspecting schmuck by finding out what their Playmaker number was, duplicate it on another Playmaker, and then change their right answers off at the last second.

Even more so royally screw the really annoying schmucks by finding out what their Playmaker number was, then put them into Players Plus signup.

Then again, one of the really fun things that NTN Buzztime took away from us :( was the ability to change our name just after the game ended, usually to duly recognize someone else. 8-)

Of course I remember, I'm old and have been playing NTN trivia for a very long time. However, I remember those boxes with their antennas as being brown, not grey.

I've also been told that when DANTE and his underaged buddies came into Damon's, hiding somewhere where people at the bar couldn't see them, they used those tricks you are talking about to kill my winning scores. However, I guess I must have been too drunk to notice it, when they did. Hell, DANTE usually would have deserved to win most times anyway. :D

p.s. Thinking back, I don't remember DANTE beating me at Damon's before I actually got to know him. Perhaps DANTE will pick up on this thread and set the record straight.

p.p.s. Liljol, we must find a picture of one of those old trivia boxes to post here. Better yet, we need to find one for sale on eBay, and buy it.

God, I loved "Dinky Toys". I know that the company made more than just war vehicles and military aircraft, but those were the only ones I cared for. They were so real, and I would maneuver the tanks, scout cars, half-tracks, etc., across my imaginary battlefield to attack an imaginary enemy. The best thing was that my "Dinky Toy" army won every battle.

"Dinky Toys" were extremely well made from solid steel, and paid great attention to detail. They were a little expensive, and my parents couldn't afford to buy me all of the military vehicles that I wanted for my army. It wasn't a big problem for General CLOUDY though. As limited as my forces were, they still won every battle.

They all look German to me. That may be why they were expensive. I do not remeber Dinky Toys.

Nope, "Dinky Toys" were not German... They were probably close to 100% British, and I would guess that the small, steel models of the war vehicles, that I treasured in my youth, were almost entirely British weapons from World War II.

Here is a link to the "Dinky Toy" story:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinky_Toys

(I didn't know that "Dinky Toys" lasted until 1979, when they closed up shop for good.)

There might still be some drive-in movies out there someplace, but I'm guessing that there ain't many of them. There was a time when every little town had at least two, but it looks like they are going the way of the typewriter. Both were good for so many years, but technology is showing them the way to the grave. :(

Listen to this song, a few of you old folks might remember it:

(The Everly Brothers are Kentucky boys.)

Oooh La La, it's almost four o'clock and I'm going to bed...

Check this out: http://www.cascadedrivein.com/

It was a great place to go when my 5 kids were little. We brought our own popcorn, drinks, and candy. It was a cheap family night out, plus the kids could run around and play with other kids whose parents were looking for a cheap night out.

However, when I was a teenager and into my early 20's Drive-ins were called passion pits. That changed when you got married and had kids. The one remaining Drive-in in the Chicago area is about 5 miles from me. Most drive-ins closed because the land they occupied became extremely valuable, not because of low attendance.
