"Cube" (1997) is a movie that you MUST SEE ! I won't tell you anything about the story, because not knowing where the story is going is what makes it the great movie that it is. Watch this movie, and try to figure out what's going on. As smart as I know you all are, I seriously doubt any of you will be able to figure out what the characters are also trying to figure out. It is like no other movie you have ever seen. You will be rooting for the characters as they use their knowledge, skills, and intellect, to escape their nightmare.

This is a very strong CLOUDY recommendation. Spend a few bucks and pick the movie up, I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

Here is some video from the movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teaOH3B91eA

p.s. There were two sequels made, "Cube 2: Hypercube" (2003) and "Cube Zero" (2004). You can watch them, if you want, but it's the first "Cube" that you must see.

Anyway, once again it has become much to late, so...

I saw the latter half of this movie a few years ago. It's creepily suspenseful, to say the least, but I have wanted to see it again from the beginning. Now that I know what it's called, I shall have to go find it

PENGWN, go get the movie. I doubt the DVD will cost you more than ten bucks, if you look around. Though it probably isn't great by SPOTES' standards, it is by mine. If you watch "Cube" again, please let us know what you think about it. An explanation of the ending would be most interesting.

Anyway, after crossing swords with ICEMAN on other threads for longer than I really wanted to, once again I need to say:

p.s. I like logging off on this thread. I love watching old movies that put me to sleep. :D

"The Secret of Santa Vittoria" (1969) is a movie that I would guess that most of you young people have never seen. You need to see it...! It is a wonderful movie, and very funny. I will not give the plot away, but I would suggest that you uncork a bottle of fine Italian wine to sip, while you get to know Italo Bombolini (Anthony Quinn), and his plan to outsmart the NASI's. You will love this guy, his plan, and the story. This is a strong CLOUDY recommendation.

Here's a link to the beginning to the movie. The beginning is very tame, and perhaps a little boring, but it sets the stage for the wonderful humor and fun that soon will have you laughing your asses off as you enjoy your fine Italian wine, while you get to know Bombolini better.

Son-of-a-bitch, I'm signing off on this thread again, without anyone giving a peep. I ain't posting here again until I know that some soul is listening, and I ain't wasting my time trying to get you to watch movies that I know you will enjoy. (Forget the dumb 1950's sci-fi and monster movies. Those recommendations are just for SPOTES. FrankC, and a few other old guys, who like to remember the old days, when those black and white films scared the shit out of us at the movie theater.)

Anyway, it looks like the hour has become late, and it's time to say:

I saw it back in 1969. Have not seen it since. My memory is that it wwas preety darn good. Anthony Quin is always great.
I have never seen it on TV. I am surprised that TCM has not run it.

Virna Lisi... hubba, hubba.
When I saw How to Murder Your Wife I remember thinking "What the hell is wrong with Jack Lemmon?"
The only other thing I really remember her for is that iconic image of her shaving her face wearing shaving cream.
A fine recommendation, Cloudy.

SPOTES, how the Hell do you know all this stuff...? I barely remembered that Anthony Quinn starred in "The Secret of Santa Vittoria", and you come up with Virna Lisi, an actress in the movie, whom I had never heard of before your post. Your knowledge of movies is so far beyond what I could ever dream of to know.

I wouldn't be surprised, if you could name all of the actors, who played Munchkins in "The Wizard of Oz".

Siskel and Ebert are now gone. I think this is your chance to fill the void that their departure created, with your in depth, critical, and intellectual commentary on movies that Siskel and Ebert once gave us, but can no longer do.

Ebert is still alive and owes my brother 10 bucks from a bet in a bar in 1975. It was a great clip. I never saw those movies, except for Rapa Nui. They were wrong about it. It is a totally accurate movie about Easter Island.
I reccomend Rapa Nui.

See this Clip. Ebert and Siskel did not understand the history of Easter Island. I reccomend Rapa Nui.

Within some circles, I'm considered a bit of a sports trivia goober.
But it might just be possible that I actually know more about movies.
I wish BT would bring back Get Reel so I could find out.

I can think of four off the top of my head:
Jerry Maren (who may still be alive)
Billy Curtis
Charlie Becker who played the mayor
Mickey Carroll

A bunch of them were husband/wife teams or various family groups like the Doll family, but I don't recall any of their first names specifically.

The problem with critics is that they're mostly worthless.
Has anyone ever had a critic sway their decision on going to a film?
Most people only regard them after the fact to confirm or argue their own viewpoint of the film in question.
Just because some journalist with a minor in film history can explain to you the technical brilliance with which some auteur expounded upon a socially significant concept, it doesn't mean you didn't just flush eight bucks right down the toilet.

BTW, happy birthday Cloudy.
My gift to you is warning you to stay away from the pedestrian slasher flick Happy Birthday to Me. In retrospect, it might be the best gift you've gotten this year... :D

Thanks SPOTES, I'm now 66.

"Happy Birthday to Me" (1981)...? Guess I need to check that movie out...

..................................... Image

Here is some video from the movie. I will warn everyone that no one under the age of 18, or anyone with a psychological homicidal tendency should view this footage. I might add, those who are prone to having vivid, terrifying nightmares, should not watch it either.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEalmOJs ... EalmOJsvM0

Anyway SPOTES, if NTN ever brings the "Get Reel" game back, I want to be sitting next to you, while you tell me the answers.

"The Court Jester" (1956), starring Danny Kaye, is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I wasn't going to put it up on the "Obscure movies you like..." thread, because I thought most everyone would have seen it. Two nights ago I was playing trivia with five very smart guys, and I made a brief comment about "The Court Jester". Only one of them had ever heard of the movie. This makes me think that 56 years have made this wonderful movie an obscure one today, so here it is.

If you have never seen this movie, you must. Trust me on this one, it will be one of the funniest movies you have ever seen.

Here's some video from the movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS75NtlH ... re=related

(Don't miss the fact that Danny suddenly gets magnetised armor.)

p.s. Better yet, it is in color...

p.p.s. Does anyone remember if it was the flagon with the dragon that has the brew that is true, or was it the other one....?

I have seen probably every Danny Kaye Movie. I never Liked him and according to George Carlin "He was an asshole".
George Carlin tried to get his autograph when he was 10 years old or so and Danny pushed him away. Carlin was the only one there at that time.

Which George Carlin movies do you think were better than Danny Kaye's? (I know this is a wise ass question, because you never mentioned any of Carlin's movies. Please forgive me, I am just being a wee bit of a jerk here.)

If you can believe IMDb, George had something other than a normal childhood, and perhaps something other than a normal life. I wouldn't put much store in his comments about things in his early life. (Read the full biography that IMDb has on this link.)

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0137506/

p.s. Lots of actors and actresses were jerks or worse, but a lot of them made pretty good movies nonetheless. Jane Fonda comes to mind. I can't stand her as a person, but I've liked most of the movies she ever made.

p.p.s. I never met Danny Kaye, and never got his autograph, but even if he refused me his autograph, I would still like his movies. :D

The pellet with the poison is in the flagon with the dragon. The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true.
Originally, the vessel with the pestle was okay and the pellet with the poison was in the chalice from the palace, but it broke.
Are you with me so far...?
The actress in that scene was Mildred Natwick.
I always liked her in stuff.
She was one of those gals that everyone recognizes instantly but never knows the name.

I never saw it in its time.
I first watched it when I was a kid in the mid-70's.
It's certainly acceptable escapist silliness.
The first few Jim Carrey movies I saw had me wondering
how many times he must have watched Danny Kaye
movies growing up.

I've seen a few of Jim Carrey's movies, but so far I haven't liked any of them. I know that there are a lot of Jim Carrey fans out there, but I am NOT one of them.

Thanks SPOTES, from now on, no matter what bar where I might find myself, I will only order beer that comes in the vessel with the pestle from the wench, who wiggles up to me, and asks me what I would like.

p.s. In it's time, did you like "The Court Jester"?

I never saw it in its time.
I first watched it when I was a kid in the mid-70's.
It's certainly acceptable escapist silliness.
The first few Jim Carrey movies I saw had me wondering
how many times he must have watched Danny Kaye
movies growing up.

I've seen a few of Jim Carrey's movies, but so far I haven't liked any of them. I know that there are a lot of Jim Carrey fans out there, but I am NOT one of them.

I didn't mind "Man on the Moon", but not a fan of the rest of them.

Delete, Delete, Delete...

Whatever the Hell is going on here, it is more than happy to delete my posts, while I am still composing them, without warning. However, when I try to delete the remnants of those posts it won't let me. This is actually good therapy for me, for I have been able to control my rage. I haven't thrown my cat out the the window or punched out my monitor yet.

(I just filled up an empty spot that could not be deleted.)

If "Man on the Moon" (1999) doesn't cost more than ten bucks, I'll pick it up and check it out.

Just bought it new on Amazon.com for $2.96 (plus shipping charges) Hell, a large tub of buttered popcorn would have cost me more than that, if I had gone to the movie theater to see it.

When it arrives, I promise to watch it, and let you know what I think of it. Who knows...? I might love the movie and put it back up here on the "Obscure movies you like..." thread. :?

Here is a link to some video of the movie:

(After watching this brief "Youtube" video, I'm a little worried. Did I just waste $2.96 and shipping charges?)

"The Martian Chronicles" (1980 TV mini series) is not an obscure movie for me, but I would guess that very few of you young guys and gals have ever seen it. Get it and watch it. I'm sure you can find a DVD set of it on the Internet somewhere, and I'm guessing it won't cost all that much.

Here is some video of it:

If you are into sci-fi and have not seen this TV mini series, I think you will must see it. If you are not into sci-fi, you should also watch it. It will be your introduction to the genius of Ray Bradbury.

Here's what Wikipedia says about it, but you probably shouldn't read it, if you really want to enjoy the series. (It's always good to be surprised, when it comes to movies.):

I was thinking of going to Mars tonight...

However, I think it best, if I just say, "Goodnight, I'm going to bed.
