I don't want to kill this thread, so I guess it's goodbye to old children's book series.

Let's open things up. How about this...? I'm sure that many of you old farts can remember the hand held can opener we grew up with. It took me a long time to find one on Google Images, Here she is:

Image

I doubt you can buy them anymore, but technology gave us this upgrade to the hand held can opener, which I believe you can still find:

Image

Thank goodness that we beer drinkers don't have to worry about having this can opener anymore:

There was a bar in Elkins, WV that had a six foot church key over the bar. When the bar closed I made a trade with the owner for the church key.

The church key is now present annually at the Potomac Highlands Homebrew Convention in thorn Run, West "By God" Virginia.

The last opener I had to buy was for some lambic beers...needed the wine opener on it...they had bottle caps & corks!!!

Cloudy, I've got one of those "second image" can openers in my desk drawer, for those occasions when I'm in the mood for Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, soup, canned fruit, etc. for lunch. It works about as well as you would expect a $4 can opener to, unfortunately, but usually I can get the can open without too much struggle

A gigantic church key...? WOW! I wish I could have been there with you guys to swill down the beer that came from the gigantic cans that you popped open with your big church key.

I doubt you could have ever polished off a six-pack of these in a month.

Who remembers the coffee can key? You youngsters are shrugging your shoulders, and asking, "Coffee can key...? What kind of nonsense is this?" Well, not so many years ago coffee came in a can that provided you with a metal key to open it. The key had a small slot in it, into which you inserted a small metal tab that was near the top of the coffee can. Once you had it inserted, you wound it around the can, until it was opened.

I have searched Google looking for a picture of a coffee can key, with no luck. So here is a link to a guy, who will tell you that they did exist:

http://www.tommcmahon.net/2005/06/memories_of_tho.html

(If anyone can come up with a picture of a coffee can key, please post it up here.)

Are Coffee can keys similar to the sardine can keys where there was a little flap on the can top and long piece of of metal w/ a slit in it that the flap would fit into and you'd roll the top back and, voila, can open???

Are THOSE what coffee can keys were like.....

It looks like JESSE's trying to get up to speed on this thread, by reading every damn post that's been put up on the "Try to Remember" from day one. Hell, I think he's dredged up a couple that are months or perhaps even years old to comment on. Nothing wrong with this. It's good to have JESSE on board. :D\

Goodnight, I'm going to bed.

JESSE, the Ford Flex ain't NO station wagon... I would describe it as some kind of cross between, a SUV, mini van, and fancy truck. Station wagons were basically regular cars, that had their back ends altered, so people could open up a special rear end door, fold down the back seat, and carry a bunch of boxes and junk, or even kids around, that the trunk of a regular car couldn't accommodate.

Image

Some even had special rear end seats that you could pop up, if you had too many kids for regular seating.

You young guys and gals won't remember flash cubes and the Kodak Instamatic Camera, unless your parents had them, when you were little guys and gals. They were great at the time, took pretty good pictures, didn't cost much, and were easy to use. Sadly, I believe that not only are the Instamatic camera, and flash cubes things of the past, I believe that Eastman Kodak has gone belly up too. :(

However, the flash cube will live on in Louisville, KY, at the corner of Hurstbourne Lane and Shelbyville Road, because that is where our beloved "Flash Cube Building" is. No, it's not the official name for the building, but that's what everybody calls it.

....... Image

This Louisville's "Flash Cube Building". Say cheese...! :D

At first I didn't remember, and wondered, "What on Earth is FranckC talking about?" That was until I watched the video he gave us the link to.

Of course...! Of course...! That's the Ernie Kovacs show. His show was great, and his skits were extremely funny. He was a master of ad libbing. (I don't think he would go over today, because his humor was somewhat cerebral, as was the humor of Jack Parr, and the very talented Steve Allen.) I was pretty young when the Ernie Kovacs show was on our two channel, black and white, nine inch screen TV set, and even though my mom and dad laughed throughout the program, a lot of his humor went over my head back then.

Image

However, here is a link to an Ernie Kovacs skit that I loved back when I was a little too young to understand what my mom and dad were laughing about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoLTFQsFswM

Thank goodness this isn't the "Ban the Person above You" thread, because little CLOUDY loved the Nairobi Trio, and I think that Liljol or ICEMAN could find some silly reason for banning me, because I was into the Nairobi Trio back in 1955, when I was 9-years-old.

p.s. I now have the entire "Ernie Kovacs Show" on DVD's, and have watched many of them. Now I get the stuff that went over my head 57 years ago.

p.p.s. Ernie Kovacs has to be one of the greatest and most creative comedian entertainers we have ever had. He's been dead since a car accident in 1962. When will get to see him smoking his big cigar on a United States postage stamp?

Guess I'm not the only person wondering where the Ernie Kovacs U.S. commemorative postage stamp is. Check this out:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Campaign- ... 4506520867

(This is just one of many links, where people can join in to get Ernie Kovacs on a U.S. postage stamp.)

p.p.p.s. I strongly believe if Ernie was alive today, still had his show, and the United States Postal Service was going to put him on a 45 cent first class stamp, he would have some satirical skit about how ridiculous it is that it now costs 45 cents for the post office to lose letters that people mail today, when they only charged 3 cents to do it back in the 1950's.

Liljol, a misspelling of a strange word on a work in progress that was corrected before it was done, and you knew it was corrected, leads to your banning of me on another thread...? Give me a break... Liljol, instead of wasting your time and effort nit picking me about this kind of silly minutia, why don't you put something up on this thread that entertains or informs people about things of the past that you remember. This thread is NOT a "gotcha" thread. It is a place where folks can share things with their friends, and not have to worry if they might have misspelled something.

I think you probably have something to contribute here, and I would love to read your posts on "Try to Remember". Better yet, you can misspell words to your heart's content here, and never have to worry. :D

Liljol asked me to post the aluminum ice trays for him...

Only old guys and gals will remember these:

Image

There could have never been a worse way to make ice cubes in your freezer than these terrible contraptions. Just pull the lever, and it was supposed to be simple. No, it's not the way they worked. All of the aluminum slats that divided the ice cubes wouldn't always move. when you pulled the lever. The ones that did move often crunched your ice cubes into tiny pieces. Keep trying it over and over again, and sometimes your lever broke off. Don't believe me...? They are totally gone today, and now you know the reason why.

Liljol would have made this post himself, if were not for the traumatic childhood experience he had with one of those aluminum lever operated ice trays many years ago.

A very young Liljol tried to lick one in the freezer. His tongue instantly froze to the metal, and it took hours before it thawed enough for him to finally pull his tongue loose. This would be a traumatic experience for any young child. I understand, and I have no problem with making this post for him.

p.s. Gotta tell the truth, I made up all of the stuff about Liljol on this post. None of it is true. However, what I said about the aluminum ice tray is gospel.

How many times have you bent or have broken the handle? I have more than once, just trying to break the ice loose so I can use a few cubes.

Yes, the ice tray from Hell... Tongues got frozen to it, it splintered ice cubes, it made ice cubes that refused to pop out, and as we both know, the lever handle wasn't up to the job.

How many times did I damage my parents' aluminum ice tray lever handle as a kid? Hell, I ain't telling. My mom's still alive, and I might get in trouble, if she found out.

p.s. I might add, that even when those aluminum ice trays worked, they didn't make ice cubes of uniform size. The aluminum blades that separated the ice cubes would shift. Some cubes came out as big as icebergs, and some came out so small that they melted the second they plopped into whatever liquid you were trying to cool.

I don't think they make 45 rpm records anymore. (Though I have heard the 33 1/3 vinal LP's might have a new life.) The 45 rpm records were great. You could go to parties, and just play the songs that people wanted to hear and dance to. You could stack them up on the hi-fi spindle adapter, and let them automatically drop down to the next one as the last one ended. While you were riding your bike over to your buddy's house, they would convienently slip over the handle bars, so you could carry a bunch of them, while you peddled your way through the neighborhood.

p.s. Does anyone remember the cheap plastic inserts that you needed to stack them on a hi-fi, if you didn't have the spindle adapter?

............... (What an invention, and NO moving parts...!)

p.p.s There were also solid metal 45 rpm adapters, that were a little trickier to insert, but never slipped out.

p.p.p.s. For you real youngsters, the 45 rpm records only had two songs on them. (One on each side.) There was an exception to this, called the EP (Extended Play) that had two songs on each side.

I guess I'll keep asking it until someone below the age of 30 gets it, or until someone over the age of 65 finally remembers that he has already asked it before. (That would be CLOUDY.)

p.s. ICEMAN, you are right again. Are you under 30...?

(Belated comment: ICEMAN, you are rapidly becoming a better "ScaRatings" archivist than BO. How do you guys do it...?)
