You are correct. The book is always better. However, great movies have been made out of books, whether they followed the book closely or just borrowed the title. The Martian Chronicles series stunk as a movie IMHO.

Frank, you are much more sophisticated and knowledgeable on these things than I am. I never read Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles". I only watched the mini-series. Back then I liked it, but I didn't have a whole lot to compare it to. I am embarrassed to admit that I wasn't bored by it. However, all of the other extremely boring things on TV back then probably made it more interesting for me.

"Have Gun Will Travel" isn't what I would consider an obscure TV series, but I'm an old guy, and I'm worried that many younger people have never watched this great program. It ran on CBS from 1957 though 1963. Richard Boone played Paladin in this western. He would quote Shakespeare, and could outdraw and outshoot pretty much every bad guy he ran into, but he never shot them unless he had to. If not the best western that was ever on TV, it stands alone as the only intellectual western that TV ever had. He often won by using his intelligence instead of his gun.

Here's an episode, which is just drama with no action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld-s5d80Zgk

Here's an episode, with some action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qDPBGIy7nc

However there were so many more episodes that the two I've posted links to, do not give the series justice.

"Have Gun Will Travel" was a thinking western, and seldom a shoot-em-up program.

Haven't read through all the posts, but I doubt anyone has listed "Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter." I saw this in Brighton, UK at the first SF Worldcon I ever went to, and I still love it, especially for the scene where they take "toad in the hole" quite literally. Very good blend of humor and horror.

AARDVK, it's gotten too late for me tonight, but I promise to check your recommendation out tomorrow, Good Lord willing.

p.s. Don't worry about not reading all of the posts on this thread. I doubt anyone has. It is 19 pages long, and that would be a lot of reading. I think you are absolutely right, and nobody else has ever mentioned the movie you are suggesting as one of the good ones, that most of us have probably missed. Thanks for your post. Keep those recommendations coming. :D

Ahem...

Without looking, I'd wager that I could recite about 90% of the movie/TV goofiness that has been recommended to boot.
But how could I not? With stellar recommendations like Ecco, Surf Nazis Must Die or Santa Claus Conquers the Martians... :?

"Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter" (1974) sounds like my kind of movie, so I guess, I will have to go out there, find it, add it to my collection, and watch it.

Here's another link that tells you something about the movie:

Here is the trailer from the movie:

Good Recommendation, AARDVK...!

p.s. I think it sounds like a movie that SPOTS might like also.

I'm thinking that even though it was a Jane Fonda movie, "Barbarella" (1968) is fading into the obscure catagory today. I'm worried that a lot of you younger guys and gals have never seen this movie, and never will, unless someone tells you that they should. It's not a great movie, but it is a fun movie. Plot...? Not too hot. Acting...? Well, they knew their lines. Meaningful message...? There was none. It was just silly and fun to watch, and I think a few of you just might enjoy it. (A little alcohol might make it seem even better than I have described it.

(I know that SPOTES will take me to task for this recommendation, but what the heck...?) :D

Here is the video of the original trailer:

I'd say you're spot on. I actually thought this movie was about a female weight lifter, and that it was called "Barbellella."

Not joking. :)

Now that you know differently, get a case of beer, and watch "Barbarella". I think it is a fun movie, and you might just surprise yourself by watching it. :D

"Babes in Toyland" (1934) was a Laurel and Hardy feature film. Not a great movie, but very funny, and I would say quite entertaining. However, I fear that as the years go by it is becoming ever more obscure. I think if you have younger kids or grandkids, you might want watch this movie with them. I really think you all will enjoy it. (There have been several remakes of the movie.)

Here is a link to the original trailer of the movie:

It looks like this movie has been colorized. Here is some video of the colorized version:

I was going to comment a bit more but it just hit me that we're probably infringing on scaratings rules regarding a few sensitive topics. And I'll take the heat, I started it, and perhaps it's nothing illegal yet. But even so, we should let it go here and now. Apologies to the mods if necessary.

Cloudy, I should probably delete my previous post. Could you possibly edit my quote from your reply or simply delete your reply altogether?

"Hell to Eternity" (1960) is a true story about Guy Gabaldon, a Marine in the Pacific during World War II. He was hispanic, and grew up in L.A. He made close friends in the Japanese community as he was growing up, and learned the Japanese language fluently. In the war he risked his life to go out alone on the Japanese occupied island of Saipan, that the American's were overrunning, and talked to Japanese in their language to convince them to surrender, rather than being killed or commiting suicide. He saved many lives, and in my opinion was a true humanitarian war hero. However, he wasn't a pacifist fool, and fought with valour when necessary.

Unfortunately, the movie decided to star Jeffery Hunter, instead of an actor, who was hispanic, but the story is still basically true.

Here is some video of the movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei2bScHvAu0

Here is some more video of the movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0abYlEjT3Q

I would also recommend that you find the Guy Gabaldon documentary and watch it too. He eventually received the Navy Cross, but I think he deserved the Medal of Honor.

Anyway the hour is very late so...

............. Goodnight I'm going to bed.

This thread needs to be revived. "Picnic at Hanging Rock" is a unique Australian film. Is it a docudrama, fiction, or even science fiction?

I never made it through that film.
There was an endless collage of nature scenes with ethereal background music interspersed with various nature sounds that has literally put me to sleep both times I've tried to watch that film.
It's like listening to Keir Dullea breathing during his space walk in 2001. Knocks me out every time. :D
If you want to watch Australian kids wandering around the outback without the fear of protracting narcolepsy*, get Fortress or Rabbit-Proof Fence.

As a bonus, with Fortress you get Rachel Ward in her prime.
That brings two words to mind: "hubba" and "hubba"

*Claims that these films prevent narcolepsy have not been verified by the FDA. Please do not drive or operate heavy machinery while watching them.

I understand your point of view. For some reason the movie fascinated me. I missed "Fortress".
"Rabbit Proof Fence" was excellent.
For Australian kids wandering around the outback you need to see the Australian classic "Walkabout".

"Bad Day at Black Rock" (1955) is a movie you don't hear much about or see anymore, but it is a MUST movie to see. Directed by John Sturges, music by Andre Previn, and starring Spencer Tracey, Robert Ryan, Ann Francis, Walter Brennan, Ernest Borgnine, and Lee Marvin, it should be on every top 100 list, but it isn't. If you have never seen this movie do yourself a favor and get it. If you do, I think you will probably add it to your top 100 movies list.

ICEMAN, you know your movies. I'm glad that we agree on "Bad Day at Black Rock". I'm surprised that we didn't hear from SPOTES or FrankC on this one. I can't believe that they never saw the movie, but if they haven't, this is one that they should take a look at.

p.s. My dad loved this movie, and added it to his repertoire of favorite phrases, that he used when everything was going wrong. There were a lot of movie titles in his repertoire of phrases. When we were getting ready to go to church, and we couldn't find one of my brother's shoes, he would say, "One of our aircraft is missing."

p.p.s. I guess I now have to put the movie "One of Our Aircraft is Missing" movie up here.

"One of Our Aircraft is Missing" (1942) is an obscure British World War Two film, that was made while we were still losing the war. Even though it's in black and white, and has no special effects to speak of, by today's standards, it still is a pretty good movie, that tells an interesting story. I've got a feeling that you older guys will like it, and the younger folks might want to see it too. Heck, after seeing it, you will want to run out and buy War Bonds!

Here's a link to the movie, which sets up the story that will follow:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwkf48aIxmw

(Back in those days, pilots on a bombing run had to limit their airspeed, and stay straight and level while over the target, which made them pretty good targets for antiaircraft fire.)

Here's a link to the movie, which I think might show the entire film:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1c8pTfPDiA

Darn you Cloudy, I spent several hours watching your youtube link. I watched the whole thing. It is a far better movie than I remember, but the last time I saw it before tonight was probably1958.

Incubus, starring a pre-Trek William Shatner. Apparently one of the only films shot entirely in Esperanto.
