I guessing that the late night horror and sci-fi movies that local TV stations used to show on Saturdays are a thing of the past, now that cable has taken over. In Upstate New York we got Baron Daemon on channel 9 out of Syracuse. Most of the horror/sci-fi stuff they showed was old, and not too good, but as a horror and sci-fi starved addict as a kid anything was good enough for me, and my younger brother and I were glued to the TV every Saturday night to watch them. The Baron started every program with "Good evening, my bloody buddies.", went into a short silly skit, introduced the movie, and then the movie began.

It wasn't at night but, as a kid I 'without fail' got up on Saturday morning to watch "THE WORLD BEYOND"!!!
This was a program on a local station in Phoenix that showed mostly those classic B-movies of the 50's. I remember being first introduced to "Godzilla", "The Crawling Eye", "Starman" (the Japanese version), "The Thing from Another World", "The Incredible Shrinking Man" etc. etc.

(I'm filling in a duplicate post that could not be deleted, but why waste the space...?)

ICEMAN, did you ever see "It! The Terror from Beyond Space" (1958)...? When we were kids, my brother, Bob, and I thought this one of the best movies ever made. Of course we were only 12 and 8 years old at the time. Heck, I am embarrassed to admit it, but I still think it was pretty good.

......................................................Image

p.s. Ridley Scott's 1979 movie, "Alien", was nothing but a fancy re-make of "It! The Terror from Beyond Space".

You are my horror/sci-fi movie soul brother, ICEMAN. Those were the days before CGI and in most cases before "B" movies deserved to be in color. (If they were in color, our black and white TV didn't know they were.) However, that was all I (we ?) had at the time, and watching them was great fun.

p.s. I think that SPOTES and FrankC are probably our horror/sci-fi movie soul brothers too.

p.p.s. If you haven't already seen it, you MUST see the 2001 (maybe 2004) movie, "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavara". I will be very surprised if you do not like it, because it is in beautiful black and white.

Oh shit, I guess I need to go back and add an "E"... Give me a second and I will change "SPOTS" into "SPOTES" yet one more time. As you well know, this isn't the first time I have made this terrible mistake.

p.s. It's fixed...!

p.p.s. I wonder why SPOTES never seems to be upset about these repetitive goof ups I have made spelling his name over the years.

In Chicago we had Shock Theater with Marvin and his wife "Dear", and later Shorty and Orville and Marvin's Deadbeats on the Shocktail party after the movie. Unfortunately the show was live so there are no tapes. The show was scarry and funny at the same time.

Later we had Svengoolie and for the last 20 or 40 years Son of Svengoole. He and Vapid made Berwyn, Il. famous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyE5ePmBQ4A

Cloudy, it is on WCIU TV, broadcast channel 50 in Chicago on Saturday Nights. I understand it is also shown on the national cable channel ME TV. I don't watch it very often since I have seen every movie at least a dozen times.

Damn, I refuse to get cable TV, so it looks like I'm gonna have to rig up a weather balloon with an antenna attached to it to pick up WCIU way down here in Kentucky. I think I can round up a thousand feet of strong wire to hook it into my TV, and if I anchor it to the ground a good distance away from my house, I shouldn't have to worry about lightning strikes.

Until recently cigarette vending machines were pretty much in every restaurant or bar you walked into. Now it seems that they are all gone, and I seriously doubt that we will ever see them again. I am sure that there are some of you, who rejoice that this has happened. However, for those of us, who still smoke, it really is no big deal. We just bring enough packs with us to the bar so we don't run out, and better yet, it saves us money.

I shudder to think how many 12 year old girls would be induced to begin smoking upon encountering such a glitter-overloaded paint job

86th Street Pub still has a cigarette vending machine.
It also vends candy bars.
Somewhere Michael Bloomberg's head is exploding upon reading this.
You're welcome, America.

Yeah, you guys in Indiana would still have cigarette vending machines in bars. In Kentucky smoking in bars has actually only been banned by counties with larger cities. There is no statewide ban. I would guess that if I travelled out in the state, I would find bars down here that still have cigarette vending machines also.

p.s. Sorry about spelling your name wrong, but after a few too many brewskis I start seeing spotes before my eyes, that blur my vision and goof me up trying to type things in. :D

How about candy cigarettes? Or is that too much to ask for . . .

There's a way around just about every stupid thing that government forces upon us. When in New York City, if you want a 32 oz. Mountain Dew, just buy two 16 oz. Moutain Dews, and if you don't finish the second one, just take it home with you. (By the way, is Michael Bloomberg aware that many restaurants in NYC offer unlimited refrills on soda pop, after you buy the first one...?)

Now, candy cigarettes are a different question. However, there is a simple solution. Just roll your own. :D

Back in the 1950's in upstate New York, we had separate doors for boys and girls waiting in line to enter elementary schools. I know that this is a thing of the past.

Image

This is a picture of DeWitt Clinton elementary school just off of South James Street in Rome, NY, where I went to 5th grade. If you look closely, you will see that the door on the right says "Girls" above it. Though you can't see it, the door on the left says "Boys". This separation of the sexes seems to have worked out, because there were no pregnancies during the year I went there.

I notice you're mum on where you got shipped for 6th grade. No telling how many of the women of Rome are grateful you weren't an early bloomer ;)

Ah, that would be Stokes School, and I can name everyone in our 6th grade class. This is easy, because there were only six of us. In alphabetical order, here they are:

Kay Currie
Wanda Jeroszko
Keith MacLeod
Karen Matt
Sharon Sawyer (Class president)
David Urtz (Sadly, I have learned that Dave passed away a number of years ago.)

Hell, we didn't have enough for a kickball team.

PENGWN cannot identify anybody in his sixth grade class picture, because all penguins look alike.

Here is PENGWN's sixth grade class picture, and I feel guilty asking him to try to remember their names:

..........................................................................Image

...................................................................................... Okay, Big Guy, how many can you name...?

Here are some fashion fads from the past that seem to have faded away. (Yeah, some of them aren't entirely gone, but they ain't what they used to be.)

I'm sure you guys and gals can think of more fashion fads you have experienced in your lifetime, that have become just memories of the past.

The pants-around-the-knees fad can't become a memory of the past soon enough!

YODA, look in the back of your closet. I never got that far, and I'm sure that you have some really goofy fashions from the past hiding back there that I missed. Be brave and tell us about the other passe fashion items that you cannot bring yourself to throw out, such at the double breasted suits and the four inch wide ties you are waiting for to come back into style.

Here are some fashion fads from the past that seem to have faded away. (Yeah, some of them aren't entirely gone, but they ain't what they used to be.)

I'm sure you guys and gals can think of more fashion fads you have experienced in your lifetime, that have become just memories of the past.

Let's not forget the Surfer culture of the 60's.

And of course, Waraji Sandals...

Cloudy, have you been snooping in my closet and taking pictures of my wardrobe again?

YODA, look in the back of your closet. I never got that far, and I'm sure that you have some really goofy fashions from the past hiding back there that I missed. Be brave and tell us about the other passe fashion items that you cannot bring yourself to throw out, such at the double breasted suits and the four inch wide ties you are waiting for to come back into style.

I wore my double breated suit last week at a funeral last week. It has the only jacket I can button over my beer belly. I probably should by a new suit, but I only were a suit to funerals nowadays. depressing.
