Remember "The Club"? (No, not the stick Cloudy used to his first date). That thing car thieves had to cut the steering wheel to take off before steaoing your car?

I saw one for the first time in ages yesterday on a car no one would have wanted to steal. Had to laugh.

I still have one of those, although I can't say that I use it. I bought it around 1990, so it really isn't that much of a nostaligia item, but come to think of it, you don't really see them anymore.

I'm sure you guys and gals can think of more fashion fads you have experienced in your lifetime, that have become just memories of the past.

Let's not forget the Surfer culture of the 60's.

The surfer shirt...

The surfers shorts...

And of course, Waraji Sandals...

Call me a hodad. I had no idea that surfer garb wasn't cool anymore. Hell, I still listen to these songs every time I go down to the Ohio River in Kentucky. Surfing in a barge's wake is a thrill, just make sure the towboat doesn't run you over.

Hey, I had the club once. As I recall someone stole it, but they didn't take my car. This is but one more reason to own a clunker car.

Did they all come in red and black?

New York City subway tokens are now just collectables. I believe that they bit the dust in 2003. Did any of you ever slip these tokens into the turnstiles in the Big Apple? I did.

Holy cow...! With all of those tokens, I guess you could travel around the World a couple to times for free. However, steer clear of New York City, because their turnstiles won't take them anymore.

p.s. The more I think about it, I should probably leave you my humble coin collection in my will. I might have some goofy coins that you don't have. I seriously doubt any of my kids would give a hoot about them, and I wouldn't want them to go to my ex-wife even if she did.

Munro Leaf's "Watchbird" magazine cartoon series back in the 1950's is now long gone. I don't remember what magazine it appeared in, but it was one that my parents got every month. It taught kids to do what was right, and not to do what was wrong. I had to search Google for quite a while to find examples of it, and could only come up with these. If there was a book out there that has them all, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

Do any of you remember the "Watchbird" magazine cartoon series?

p.s. I vaguely remember it saying, "This is a watchbird watching you."

(Belated edit: I went to Amazon.com looking for Munro Leaf's books tonight. The one I would have liked, "Four-And-Twenty Watchbirds", was a real bargain. The cheapest one was only $99.00 and the best one was a steal at a mere $1,723.91. Unless I win the lottery, it looks like I will have to just rely on my memories of those cartoons from the 1950's.)

Does anyone remember the old police radar traps, that they set up on a tripod on the side of the road? The last one I saw was on US 20 in Upstate New York, back in the late 1960's.

It looked a lot like this:

Image

What a lot of us speeders did back then was to flash our headlights at oncoming cars to warn them that cops were waiting for them with radar.

It's been a long time, but banknotes used to be issued by banks, not the government

If you've got an extra quarter million or so burning a hole in your pocket, one of the rarest is up for auction

I used to flash my headlights, but after countless close calls with speeding drivers and one accident on a New Years Eve a few years back (the other guy got away but I think was doing about 100), I now think we'd all be be safer if they got the ticket!

ZOG, I agree with you, when it comes to idiots going 100 mph. They need to be arrested, locked up, and have their driver's licenses taken away. However, I was referring to the days, when cops and their radar traps, pulled people over, who were just a tad above the acceptable speed limit. Back then, the cops would give you a ticket for going 60 in a 55 mph zone.

p.s. I don't flash my lights at oncoming drivers anymore either, because these days the cops don't pull people over, unless they are exceeding the speed limit by 15 mph or more.

p.p.s. I've been driving since 1963. Over that time I have had only two speeding tickets. One was in 1967, and the other was in 1997. Neither time was I driving anywhere close to 100 mph.

Does anyone remember football goal posts that were "H" shaped instead of "Y" shaped, and made of wood instead of metal? Back then, when they tore the old goal posts down, it didn't cost $20,000 to replace them, and everyone, who cared, got at least a splinter of them to take home as a souvenir.

Image

You only have to listen to the first 60 seconds of this song to get to tearing the goal posts down, but the title and the words of this song fit this thread very well. So what the heck, listen to the whole thing, if you want. :D

How about car window crank handles...?

I can't remember the last time I owned a car that I had to roll the windows up and down with a crank handle attached to the inside of the door. Some of you younger guys and gals will have no idea of what I'm talking about. However, I'm not kidding, there was once a time that you couldn't move your car windows up and down with a push button. The nice thing about them was that they ALWAYS worked.

My 2009 Kia Rio5 has manual windows like this. It's not even a stripped-down model; it has A/C and stereo with CD/mp3 and Sirius radio.

RACKME, I'm glad to hear it. I thought that those manual window crank handles were gone forever. I actually think that all automobile manufacturers should provide car drivers with an emergency window crank that they could insert into a slot in the door to use, whenever their electrical push button window buttons malfunction, with the windows down, as a torrential rainstorm is but minutes away.

That's weird, my bullshit detector is just going nuts for some reason :P

But it should please you to learn a young whippersnapper like me also drives a car with roll up/roll down windows. Granted, that car is a 1997 Cavalier closing in on 200,000 miles. Still the youngest car I've ever owned

Keep on changing the oil on a timely basis, my good friend, and your Cavalier may live forever.

FISHMAN is still driving my old 1992 Toyota Previa minivan. He takes much better care of it than I ever did, and I would guess it now has as many miles on it as your Cavalier does.

p.s. Yep, I might have bent the truth a little bit about those old bank notes. Actually, I think the silverfish gobbled them all up, and all that was left of them at the bottom of my shoebox in the attic was a bunch of tiny bits of paper and a lot of silverfish shit.

Years ago heavyweight championship boxing matches were shown on regular TV, where everyone could watch them. I don't remember exactly when the boxing world decided that because it was more profitable to put these fights on pay TV, instead of letting them be seen by all of us, but for me it has killed the sport. Back in the old days, I watched every heavyweight championship fight. It was a big event. Today I couldn't tell you who the current heavyweight champion is, whom he beat, nor do I even care anymore. The last heavyweight championship bouts I watched all featured a boxer by the name of Rocky Balboa.

....................................................................... Image

p.s. Out of curiosity, how many of you watched the last heavyweight championship fight live...?

Boxing has a variety of issues that have led to its downfall from prominence.
-The aformentioned PPV system
-multiple sanctioning bodies leading to multiple "champions"
-handpicking title bout contestants regardless of ranking
-influx of European competition at the heavyweight level
-Don King

Boxing has a variety of issues that have led to its downfall from prominence.
-The aformentioned PPV system
-multiple sanctioning bodies leading to multiple "champions"
-handpicking title bout contestants regardless of ranking
-influx of European competition at the heavyweight level
-Don King

The last one I watched on regular TV was the second match between ALI and SPINKS. I also saw the first one.
