Now would be an excellent time to remind our viewers that this thread is entitled "Obscure movies you like...".
Bad Day at Black Rock is by no means obscure, hence my failure to comment.
And not one person in the history of movie watching liked Incubus. Not one. I've asked them all.

I can't say that I liked it in the traditional sense of liking. I liked it more in the train wreck sort of way -- gruesome, but hard to avert your eyes.

B O D, I'm pretty sure I've got the movie, "Incubus" (1966), somewhere in the catacombs of my basement. I vaguely remember watching it, and it wasn't all that bad. Guess, I will have to go down there and fight my way through the cobwebs to find it, so I can watch it one more time.

There have been several movies with the title "Incubus", and I am worried that I might not have the one with William Shatner, because of what I just read.

"The film was lost for many years because the original print of the film burned in a fire and all copies were reported lost, destroyed, or worn away, but a copy of the film with French subtitles was found in the permanent collection of the Cinémathèque Française in Paris. The Sci Fi Channel funded the restoration from that print and released a DVD in 2001 that included subtitles in English and French. Because the source print contained burned-in French subtitles, the English subtitles are placed over black bars that partially obscure some portions of the frame."

Here is some video from the movie, and I am sorry to say that this is not the "Incubus" that I watched, but I guess I now need to to out and find the movie to watch, and add to my collection.

SPOTES, obscurity is in the eye of the beholder. A definition of the word, as it applies to movies of yesteryear is very subjective. For a person as you, who is probably one of the most knowledgeable people in the world about all movies, very few will seem obscure, if they were any good. I have a different take on what makes a movie obscure. For me movies (No matter how good they might have been.) that are seldom seen today, and that very few people have ever watched, and have no recollection of, have become obscure.

Next time you ride the bus, ask anyone you want to tell you what they thought of "Bad Day at Black Rock", and I doubt they will have the slightest clue as to what you are talking about. You could ask everybody on the bus the same question, and all you will get is blank stares from people, who think you are some kind of a nut.

Yes, those such as yourself, who know their movies, are unlikely to consider "Bad Day at Black Rock" an obscure movie, but they are but a handful. The masses are asses, and I think for them it is an obscure movie.

SPOTES, I think you are holding us to a much higher standard than many of us can measure up to. Without question you are a moviephile par excellence, and I can understand how some of the dumb posts we put up here might rankle you. Please try to understand that very few of us, have anything close to your knowledge of movies, and we're trying our best to mention movies that we remember and liked, that we think others are not aware of.

Cloudy, I think you have me confused with someone who doesn't enjoy watching the occasional stinker. It's not only possible, indeed mathematically probable, that I've seen more truly bad movies than most people have seen movies in general.
I don't consider crapfest movie suggestions rankling; more of a challenge really...

I'm not sure that asking complete strangers about a movie wherein a man is murdered and buried in the desert is the best way to strike up a conversation.

Cloudy, my friend, I must side with Spotes on this. "Bad Day At Black Rock" is not obscure. It is an older movie which many younger folk have not seen, but it appears on televesion every year. I saw it a few months ago. It is a Spencer Tracy movie. Nothing he did is obscure.

Frank, of course to you "Bad Day at Black Rock" isn't an obscure movie, nor is it to me, SPOTES, or a lot of other older moviephiles. However, I will contend that it has become obscure to the masses today. I don't care that it might show up once a year on one of the 300 channels that people can get on cable. I would guess that 95 percent of Americans have never heard of it, let alone seen it. I know that there must be hundreds of thousands of movies that they have no knowledge of, and have never seen also. However, almost all of them were terrible, but "Bad Day at Black Rock" was one of the best movies back in 1955. I would also guess that some of the younger people on the "ScaRatings" were not familiar with it, and I wanted to let them know about it, just in case they missed watching it when it came up on one of their 300 cable channels once a year.

Believe me, many things that you know and love often become obscure to others as the years roll by.

Okay, here is truly an obscure movie, "The Ropin' Fool" (1922). This is a film that I don't think many people alive today have ever seen, including SPOTES, even though it stared one of America's greatest personalities, Will Rogers. The thing I liked best about it was when Will lassoed a mouse. (I believe he actually did it, with no special effects.)

Be careful, Frank. I watched the film clip you gave us the link to, and I'm worried that DANTE might view "Will Rogers - Bacon, Beans, and Limousines" (1931} as political. Actually, I don't think you need to worry a whole lot, because it is about 70 years old, and I don't think DANTE will ban you for it.

In the name of science I asked 18 people at or near my bar today if they had heard of Bad Day at Black Rock, none of which were my fellow trivia players.
Of the 14 people in the bar (ages ranging from roughly 30 to 70, I didn't pry) 6 had heard of it.
Of the 4 twenty-somethings hanging out in the outdoor smoking area near the hookah bar, none had heard of it.

That's 6 for 18.
Despite the small sample group, 33% doesn't seem particularly obscure.

I also asked if they had heard of Spencer Tracy before telling them he was in the movie.
14 for 14 in the bar and 2 for 4 with the kids.

Way to hang in there, Spence!

Lastly, just for funsies, I asked if they could name another Spencer Tracy movie.

Got:
Six Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
Two On Golden Pond. (Doh!)
One Boys Town.
One Thirty Seconds over Tokyo. (sort of; "Twenty Miles from Tokyo?" )
One The Old Man and the Sea.
One It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. (nicely played, sir...)

One person from the bar would not hazard a guess and the four youngsters outside did not offer a serious possible answer.
Unless Tracy was in some movie called Who gives a fuck? which I am unaware of...

Now, I'm not saying that I accept your quasi scientific polling, but I will admit that I may have been overly pessimistic, about Americans, who have seen "Bad Day at Black Rock". Therefore, I plan to conduct my own poll the next time I am at Buffalo Wild Wings. I will not ask them if they have ever heard of "Bad Day at Black Rock", because many, who have no idea, will say yes, for fear of looking ignorant. I'm still working on exactly what my question will be, but it will probably be something like this, "When I say 'Bad Day at Black Rock', what comes to mind?"

p.s. I am proud of you for taking a poll. It took guts...!

p.p.s. The World knows that the "86 Street Pub" attracts some of the most knowledgeable people in the Indianapolis area. The ability of these people to name so many other Spencer Tracy movies kind of makes me think that you may have polled a group that is not representative of the public in general. Perhaps you would have gotten a different result, if you took your poll on a city bus.

I don't think anyone has mentioned "Flight of the Phoenix" (1965) yet. Perhaps you moviephiles don't consider it obscure, but by my thinking it is becoming more and more obscure with every year that passes. It had an all star cast, and is one of my favorite movies, even though it is almost 50 years old.

The veteran stunt pilot, Paul Mantz, who flew the "Phoenix", was killed in a crash, while the movie was being filmed.

(The crash had nothing to do with pilot error. The aircraft broke apart on landing.)

p.s. The movie was remade in 2004. I've never seen the remake. Is it any good?

I like your "From Beyond the Grave" (1974) suggestion. I don't think I have it, nor have ever seen it, but I guess I need to get it, because it sounds like my kind of movie.

"Teenagers from Outer Space" (1959) isn't a great movie, but I liked it, and for sure I won't take any crap from you moviephiles telling me that it isn't obscure. I'm sure that SPOTES and FrankC have seen it, but I doubt that many others have.

(The cave in the trailer looks an awful lot like the cave in "Robot Monster". One of the characters looks a lot like David Janssen, but after checking it out, I can find no mention of him ever being in the movie.)

Yes I saw it. I always like movies with flashlights being rayguns and the monster being a giant lobster.

Teenager movies were all the rage in the 50's. One that is very obsure is "I was a Teenage Caveman" starring Robert Vaughn.

Not only have I seen it, the Mexican version of the movie poster is hanging in my house.

It's right next to the movie poster for my next recommendation, Phase IV.
I believe it might be the only directorial effort by famed title designer Saul Bass.
It's an sf story about ants being directed by an alien intelligence and the team of scientists attempting to stop them. Of all the movies featuring Peter Sellers' last wife, it's my favorite.

Two additional suggestions of an sf nature (both of which feature stalwart 70's icon Bradford Dillman):

Bug (Another "insects with an attitude" flick; this time it's roaches that can start fires with their legs that come to the surface after an earthquake. They're not carnivorous, but they're willing to learn.)
Chosen Survivors (Combines the best of both man's governmental and environmental hubris... or it's simply a hoot about killer bats at a secret underground facility... YOU be the judge!)

"Phase IV", "Bug", and "Chosen Survivors"...

Damn it...! I've never seen any of your three recommendations. However, because you have never put a bad recommendation on this thread, I plan to pick them up as soon as my Social Security check arrives.
